Not that anyone particularly needs my two cents, but as a nonreligious person considering converting to Christianity and Catholicism in particular, really almost the whole appeal of the Catholic Church is the tradition, continuity, feelings of ancient-ness and reverence and beauty, and the sense of communion with deep history and culture, which are all totally absent from modern life. Wasn't aware of the subtleties of this issue but now I have a sense that I would greatly prefer a Latin mass (have never been to one, there aren't any within an hour's drive of me - I looked it up) and I can now understand why people like J.R.R. Tolkien were so desperate to retain the Latin tradition in the 60s.

This is precisely what drew me to the Latin mass. All of my years attending a NO Mass, I had 0 clue that there was something even more reverent, ancient & traditional. Which is precisely what my spiritual life was craving.

I wish I had opened my heart sooner. We baptised our kids early, but I was still an atheist and my wife a cultural Catholic, simply wanting them to have a sense of their maternal roots. My youngest was already 5 and oldest 7, when I met my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and accepted the Holy Trinity as my God. I tried my hardest to get my kids into the church with me, but they never accepted it as normal and are now fully on the way of the secular nihilist I used to be… I pray for them daily in church, hoping that it won’t take them 35 years to find God, like me… 😢 These kids are blessed that they carry the Lord in their hearts from day 1 🙏❤️

You can have masses said for them, you can have masses said for conversion. I'm 29, was a cradle Catholic, got away from the church, but thanks to watching and reading a lot on apparitions of Mother Mary, I have come home to Christ stronger than I ever knew before. Stay strong, maybe invite them to Latin mass; that was a huge impact on me.

Honestly for being an Atheist, Alex O'Connor is a pretty respectable human being. I'd love to see a day where he returns to the faith, but for now, we've gotta commend him for genuinely trying to learn more about Christianity, even though he doesn't currently believe in God. Most Atheists stay pretty ignorant to the subject they're completely against, and simply listen to other Atheists. I think that's what keeps him a bit more humble, ultimately calm and respectful during debates, unlike his counterparts who debate from a place of anger and hatred. You'll never win someone over with hate, and just further the divide.

I went to Mass this morning in my small country parish, the priest had exposed Our Lord in the Monstrance on the altar - as I arrived in the small vestibule (maybe 10' by 8') three "ministers" two of handing out the newsletter and one of reader" were having a loud conversation ( the door into the church was wide open) - maybe 10 people inside, I went in and closed the door behind me. Within a few minutes two people starting talking in their pew and a lady crossed over the aisle to stand with her back to Our Lord hands leaning on the pew in front of her and starting chatting to another two ladies in their pew. I am convinced that each parish is in dire need of basic Catholic teaching on the Eucharist. Reverence and awe are just not present.
@catfood1161
@catfood1161 6 месяцев назад
A lot of people go into the house of the lord to feel a sense of community. I used to turn and walk to the back of the church at the Eucharist of all moments because I was trying to not get in the way of other parishioners … one Sunday I got up to do this and He just simply and gently told me to keep facing forward. I think someone in my church prayed for me. For a bit of context I belong to an Anglo Catholic Church (St Bartholomew’s in Brighton UK) and we have a wonderful liturgy using the Roman missal (translated of course) every mass is a blessing (of course)… we even have people from local RC churches attend our services during Holy Week because they are so much more reverent than their own… I had no idea that not every catholic believes in transubstantiation- that’s kind of a key feature of Christianity… I’ve been to some RC masses (I don’t take communion) and they’re nice but they’re not particularly reverent, in my experience anyway.
@carolnearson7932

Those things are painful to read. These folks should gather together to do community together after Mass! Have donuts and coffee in the hall, go out for breakfast together…but to do that inside church during a holy time is not the place to do community with each other, but to worship the Lord together!!

What he said about Tradition vs old is something I’ve been saying for a while. It’s so annoying when people like Michael Lofton say something like “communion in the hand is more traditional” it may be older, but traditional means it’s been done for the longest time

@@YiriUbic3793 I don't hate him entirely. Some of his older videos on Eastern Orthodoxy are quite good, especially when he had his take on Pints with Aquinas about the Orthodox. Pretty good episode. The reason I unsubscribed was because his viewpoint on Pope Francis seems to give him too much of the benefit of the doubt in this time where the Catholic Church is being attacked by modernism from foreign and internal threats. Pope Francis just doesn't go against the modernist like the Church needs. Whereas St. Pius X used his supreme papal authority to actual deal with the modernism in his time. The Roman Pontiff shouldn't have climate change and this Synod at the top of his mind. It should be actually punishing pedos in the Church, which he barely gave a slap on the hand to Fr. Rupnik who molested nuns and Cardinal Fernandez who has mishandled abuse cases, excommunicating politicians who support abortion (which he hasn't with Pres. Biden and others), and being bold with pronouncements against LGBTQ instead of dancing around the issue with same sex couple blessing which is scandalous.

I think Ireland and Latin America both got hit super hard by a movement to separate the most devout Catholic populations in the world from the true Church. Lovely people like you who are truly seeking Christ in order to live as you are meant to. Especially with your mother's love for your children, you want to give them the armor and weapons to be followers of Christ. People will tell you what to do. We get VERY excited about people coming back to the family with a real understanding of the gifts and grace and strength that are given to us in the sacraments. I hope you do find your way back to the Church. I know you must have felt a lack of connection with Christ in the Mass as you were growing up. It's our fault. We don't teach people anything about what is happening. It's a real attraction to the connection and enthusiasm you can find in many protestant congregations. I understand how that would draw you in, and God bless you for seeking a relationship with Him. I would say you cannot have a closer relationship with Him than to be in His presence literally at the Mass.Bring your enthusiasm for the Gospel and for a joyful prayer life and infuse it with the truth of the Sacraments. Benediciones a tu familia. Nuestra Senora os ama como una Madre ama a su hija.

Unfortunately, there is not a single Traditional Latin Mass in my city. I'm actually a bit pissed off to be honest. I should be able to take part in the same mass as did my ancestors. But apparently I can't. I won't be attending the new mass, nor any other church denomination (although I may look into Eastern Orthodoxy) until I have attended a Traditional Latin Mass. I do plan to move to a different city or perhaps country in a few years, so that may be my chance. I certainly hope so.

I'm a cradle Catholic, born in the early '70s when the church was still trying to find its footing and often overcorrecting post-V2. Catechesis was terrible; Mary statues were being shoved into closets; rosaries were being discouraged. Catholicism was being aggressively de-Catholicized. I didn't know that at the time. I just thought I was born into a faith tradition with no fundamental difference from liturgical Protestantism. Nobody ever told me why I should be a Catholic as opposed to, say, an Episcopalian or a high-church Lutheran. I never even attended a Latin Mass until I was in my thirties. When I did, I felt like we'd all been robbed of something sacred and beautiful. These days I fall more on Alex O'Connor's side than on Michael Knowles' when it comes to religious belief, but I still find myself drawn to the sacredness, rituals, and tradition of the TLM. It humbles you. It directs you upward and out of yourself. The modern Mass doesn't. It's a banal two-way conversation that leaves you stuck there, in the mundane everyday world, and takes you no further. If Catholicism wants to shake up the world, I think the only way it can do that is through the TLM. Otherwise it's just another indistinguishable product on the shelf.

During Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, He made 7 (seven) touching prayers (statements) starting with "Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing", and ending with "Father into Thy hands I commit my spirit". For those who find it difficult to follow the Latin, and want to "participate actually" (participatio actuosa), I would recommend meditating on these 7 statements, after Sanctus onwards when the reverential silence is the deepest.... and by the time you say "Domine non dignus" you will have surrendered to Jesus your soul ready to receive Him - Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity". You will have stood by the cross as Mary did accepting you as her "son' at His command. That is the beauty of theLatin mass. This is both active and actual participation at the Holy Mass. This is possible only during the reverent and dignified silence in the Latin Mass. During the actual crucifixion only His enemies patted each others' back for the black deed they did 1990 years ago.

Latin Mass is just a tradition, a man-made tradition and Latin is a dead language. If people still speak/understand it then maybe you can have daily Latin Mass. TLM squabble is an American thing. We outside the US are just happy with the Holy Mass celebrated in our own language. Did Jesus ever ask to celebrate the Holy Mass or to pray in Latin? Did our Blessed Holy Mother speak Latin during Her apparitions in Guadalupe, Lourdes or Fatima etc.? Did our Blessed Holy Mother ask us to pray the rosary in Latin? It is the heart that counts on how we express and show our love and devotion to the Lord and to His Holy Mother. God accepts our prayers and offerings in any language.
