World-renowned session ace Michael Landau talks about some of the key features of his new signature amp. In addition to being a perfect platform for pedals, the Hot Rod DeVille ML 212 offers some killer upgrades for Hot Rod fans and tone enthusiasts alike, including premium Celestion V-Type speakers and switchable volume and boost controls.
"Thanks for checking out the amp," said Landau. "I’d like to add an important point that I didn’t cover in the video.
"In the video, I referred to Volume 1 and Volume 2 as being clean, but these two volume controls act the same way as with Blackface Fender amps. When you turn either of the volumes on this new Hot Rod DeVille past '4,' the amp starts to go naturally into that Fender 6L6 output section tube breakup that we know and love. I normally keep Volume 1 around '4,' and Volume 2 around '6.' This is where the amp sounds really good with pedals. When you add an overdrive pedal on top of the natural tube breakup that the amp has, it starts to go into that touch sensitive zone that we guitar playing 'wackos' are addicted to. I usually use a Maxon SD-9 as an overdrive pedal with this amp, but really any good sounding pedal will work. I normally leave the overdrive pedal on most of the time, and roll back the volume on the guitar to control the amount of dirt. The volume control on the amp sets the overall volume. I’ve always been very impressed by how big the 2x12 DeVille amps sound for their size, and with the Celestion V-Type speakers and power amp section upgrade, the tone is even bigger now."

Jesse Juno I use an attentuator in the effectsloop and then I can control the outputvolume and adjust the volumeknobs on the channels as I want to. The attentuator is practically like a mastervolume even if it's not at the "end" of the ampcurcuit. Then I can use it for rehearsing at home and on big stages and always get my preffered ampsound on any volumelevel 😊

I love this amp! Very versatile! A working guitarist wet dream! Very rich in volume, a thick and creamy clean tone... not harsh. Amp is incredibly responsive to your technique. And the amp let's your guitar's tone come through. Pedals sound great through it. HRD's are a great tube amp and this model is no different! Powerfully loud, adept for just about any venue. Fender designed a great amp that can be used for Jazz, Blues, Rock, Alternative Rock and Country IMO..... All the HRD models are very solid!

I have a Fender Super Sonic 60 head amp (SS60) over a Fender Vibroking Cabinet with 2 x 12" Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. It share the same power section of Fender Hot Rod Deville 2 x 6L6GC @ 4 ohm producing 60 watts and the "Bassman" preamp voice of the Vintage Channel of SS60 is very similar to Deville. However, the SS60 have much more preamp choices: the Vintage channel is very pedal friendly with Vibrolux blackface tone and Bassman tweed tone and the tone shaping of the Burn channel is very flexible in function of 2 gain stages and active tone stack circuitry, requiring only internal boost of FX Loop to push the power section. It's an incredible and impressive amplifier!

I've been thinking the same about DeVilles and HotRodded Deluxes any time I play with them, let Fender get rid of their "drive" channel, adjust the price accordingly and the would have an even greater workhorse stable.

Wait. Channel switching with a shared EQ section vs switching between two volumes (one of which has a boost) sharing the same EQ section --- what's the difference?
@javiceres
@javiceres 8 лет назад
The difference is the preamp of the regular 2 channel DeVille changes from ch1 to ch2
@slimturnpike
@slimturnpike 8 лет назад
+Javi G really? How do they differ, other than added boost?
@javiceres
@javiceres 8 лет назад
slimturnpike That's it a couple of tube gain stages IIRC. I don't mean that they are 2 discreete preamps. The ML on the other hand does not have that extra stages (wich are useless IMO) but two master volume settings. Not quite the same.
@Scratch_Monsters_Golf
@Scratch_Monsters_Golf 5 лет назад
Basically, it’s a very gradual progression through the gain stages. Vol one on 4 (clean), switch to Vol two on 6 (clean boost), kick in the boost and it’s slightly more breakup than the clean boost. All options run through the same circuit so it isn’t as noticeable as different channels. Think of it as two boost peaks built into the amp.

why didn't you make the reverb foot switchable? why even have a reverb if you can't turn it on or off while playing?
@fretbuzz59
@fretbuzz59 9 лет назад
unabonger777 Because he doesn't use it as an effect; it's part of the basic sound. For the people who use reverb, isn't that how most of them use it?
@unabonger777
@unabonger777 9 лет назад
fretbuzz59 most people don't want reverb on their crunch rhythm tones.
@fretbuzz59
@fretbuzz59 9 лет назад
unabonger777 Perhaps. But my observation is that the players who use verb and/or delay (either onboard or external) have it on all the time as part of their base tone.
@Blueslicks321
@Blueslicks321 8 лет назад
+fretbuzz59 I know what ya mean... see it a lot... However I move about on the tone spectrum. Set the reverb on and leave it, Yet .... I like to cycle in and out the chorus and delay when needed. (not really part of my base tone) ... sometimes with the gain... when in use...sometimes not. Having a very practical amp like this makes all the difference!

if you look closely, you can see, that one guitar has a string tree and the other doesn't. i'm not completely sure, that they are different guitars, but i i should choose, i'd say the one with the string tree is the vintage 63 and the one with out ist the custom shop

Marco is right, at 3:58 for example is the original. It's faded closer to a salmon color, and has a string tree. When he begins talking about the boost function in relation to the bridge pickup, the color darkens and the string tree disappears. That is the FCS Strat that he has been playing on tour.

Ditto, my 4X10 deville is one of the best combo amps for pedals, no shit. BUT ITS SLOOP LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not tried a outplayed or other attenuation methods, it always seems hazardous to the amp so ive stayed away from it. A 20 or 30 watt HRD with the same headroom would be amazing. Damn circuit board amps, the available mods are very limited. Ive had divided by 13's, Dr. Z, Tone King, Two Rock, Smith custom amps, diezel, Bogner, blackface twins, supers and deluxes and everything in between and my Hot rod deville and dr z ezg are the only two amps ive kept for not than 10 years. If youre on a budget the hotord deville is the best pedal platform, even the dr z max 18 cleans aren't as nice as the deville, especially if you swap in some good, aftermarket speakers.

Kustom Hooligans Give me real Jensen speakers any day in a Fender amp. They make all the difference. They also aren't terribly expensive, so I don't understand why Fender doesn't use them instead of those horrible Fender brand knockoffs. The Celestions are better, but they're no Jensens. I also don't understand why they don't hand wire every amp since they're all made in Mexico now where label is dirt cheap. It only takes about 6 to 8 hours to hand wire an amp. Your average Fender worker n Mexico makes $75 per week. You do the math.

I’ve got a regular HR Deville and I’ve owned some really nice amps in the past. Old Fenders and Marshall’s MkII C Boogies all sorts, some I should’ve kept. But the HRD is the last amp I’ll buy and keep. Does everything well. Building a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe for fun right now but the Deville is definitely a keeper. Chuck an old ProCo Rat or decent OD pedal in front of it and it’ll wail with the best of em. More headroom than a HR Deluxe. These ML mods look really good and I agree on Mikes opinion of master vols
