Even Michael Lombardi doesn’t mention the biggest issue. That’s John Spanos as Chargers President of Football Operations.

Big Bolts fan. Colin Cowherd may be friends with Tom Telesco but he mentions that there are too many hands in the pot. I 100% agree that John Spanos is the root of the problem. How on earth did we lose Daboll when he was in the door recruiting his staff. Johnny Boy, I believe is the problem. Telesco grew up with Daboll, I believe too.

I’m glad he said Lynn was a better coach than Staley. Not as good of a game manager but the team was way more competitive under Lynn

Also, Mike seems like a closeted Anthony Lynn fan. I kinda like that considering he has no ties to Lynn. After all, Lynn had a winning record, and a better record in his first 3 years than Staley.

Lynn’s problem was his time management and decision making in close games was awful. I loved him as a human being but he wasn’t ready to be a coach.

The Spanos family showed you who they were when they fired Marty Shotenheimer after that 14-2 season. They want control, and are not willing to surrender any amount to laborers in their employ. I find it hard to imagine that any established coach would take the job after the interview process. Prior to conversations in the network of insiders, and investigations into the opportunity, the job looks great. But once the tiles, responsibilities, and scope of control is laid out Bill and Harbaugh probably aren’t realistic options for the Spanos family. I hope I’m wrong as a lifelong Charger fan, but the track record since Marty says differently.

Lifelong Chargers fan too, all the way back to Balboa Stadium. Agree the Spanos’ have control problems but Marty’s firing is a bit different. He was fired by Spanos for insubordination by trying to hire his brother, Kurt, as DC. Right or wrong Dean didn’t want nepotism within his coaching staff. Hard to argue that if you do something you know your boss has explicitly told you not to do that you should keep your job. In fact, Marty may have engineered his firing. The result: He got paid $4 million to play golf. As for that 14-2 season, we all remember how that ended. Notwithstanding Marlon McCee, was that his boneheaded fumble (it was 4th down, he should never have even made the int) was made exponentially worse by Marty challenging the obvious and losing an invaluable 2nd half timeout. This ultimately forced Rivers to work a long field on the Chargers’ final drive with about a minute on the clock with NO timeouts! McCree’s fumble was not game losing. Arguably Marty’s challenge was or at least substantially decreased the chances the Chargers tied or won that game in regulation. It’s great Marty made it to the playoffs so many times. Not great was his 5-13 playoff record. As a Charger fan I hear the team should have never fired Marty all the time. My retort is asking what NFL team did Marty coach after he was fired?
@rustylidrazzah5170
@rustylidrazzah5170 7 месяцев назад
@@johnhammond3730 I remember everything just as you describe. My only point is Marty was the last time there was any sustained success despite Marty’s flaws. And nepotism is rampant in the NFL, including in the Spanos organization. It takes nothing away from my point about control. Some NFL owners exhibit more control, some hands off, but the Spanos family seem to display that in their coaching hires. The boss telling Marty don’t do it, Marty doing it, it being normal in the NFL, and Marty getting a paid retirement out of it, is all aside from my point.

Everyone can fantasize over Belichick and Harbaugh, but that’s the issue with fans and owners who are PR-crazed. All can’t look at others that don’t seem so obvious like Dan Quinn, Brian Flores, or Jim Caldwell. Also, the Chargers were stupid to not hire Shane Steichen, Herbert’s ex-OC, last year.

First of all the main problem is the ownership and the way they run the team and how they don’t want to hire a general manager and give up their power, and that is the same with the head coach. Next, what they need is a coach who knows how and has proven to win. It isn’t about toughness, it’s about closing out games and having the mamba mentality that I’m not going to lose no matter what that’s how they lose those close games is they don’t know how to win close games and clutch situations because they head coach panicsand the general manager hired the head coach and the owner hired the general manager

it is not “nonsense” that Lombardi’s buddy BB only won with TB12. How many SBs would he have won without Brady? Exactly 0.

Belichick’s game plan for defeating the 1990 Bills in the Super Bowl was taken by the Hall of Fame as a an exhibit. The Bills scored over 50 points in the previous playoff game. Remember that Bledsoe was still a decent QB when Brady became the starter. No doubt that Brady was huge in winning Super Bowls but they won the first 3 by 3 points each. Belichick’s defense: could adjust to play any way & took away what they did best. The Pats won a lot of close games because of Belichick’s coaching.

Brady was a 6th round pick backup QB. Let's say Brandon Staley was his coach. Do you think he'd have developed TB into the GOAT? Enough of this bashing Belichick (and believe me I am NOT a fan of his cheating ass) but you got to give him his due. Turn your statement around. How many rings would TB have without Belichick’s development of him? Think about it.

@@johnhammond3730 disagree wholeheartedly. Not a TB lover, but Belichick didn’t turn him into the goat, otherwise Mac Jones would be halfway to Canton now. I believe Brady would’ve won wherever he went, he was that driven.

The Chargers never built a strong foundation of offensive and defensive lineman. It has to start there. Unfortunately they have no salary cap space left because so many high priced players have not contributed. It's going to be a sad couple of years ahead cleaning this up. Bosa, Williams, Ekler and several other high priced players have to go. Ekler has been the heart and soul of this offense but they can't afford him anymore.

Ekeler has sucked all year! He's a terrible running back! He's barely capable if getting 2 yards where he excels is catching passes out of the backfield!
