Being more a Folk Music enthusiast myself as opposed to Bluegrass picker this was very helpful to me personally. I've only played Banjo a couple of years and am a big fan of Pete Seeger. Like him I learned to pick upwards with my index finger then strum down for my claw hammer presentation in a bum diddy rhythm. Pete was the one who originated the term bum diddy in his 1947 Banjo Playing book. However I don't want to be bound to that one rhythm tempo alone having to include the fifth string each stroke. So Michael gives good ideas for playing outside the bum diddy structure to broaden your selection choices. I needed that. I didn't know where to go up the neck or how to do it until this video. Excellent workshop.

If only we have a banjo teacher like this (or any banjo teacher at all) in my country, I could be one of the 1st to enroll in the class.

I liked this video even though Chris Pandolfi couldn’t do Deering Live until July 18th. I heard Chris on the radio a long time ago.

Interesting you did not answer the student 14 mins ..about the right hand. So here it is, the Th(umb) rests on the 5th Str, the 2nd finger strikes the 2nd Str- downpicked - the Th goes down and picks the same Str. Next, interesting you do not declare your finger nail protector, which on Steel strings saves your nail from wear. BTW in Uncle Dave Macon's day they used Gut Strings so there was no wear from down picking with a finger nail.
