Teddy was basically abusive mentally and physically even in the corner with him. I don't throw that word around lightly either I can't stand everyone calling every little thing abusive but this felt like abuse to me when I would watch those between round scuffles they had. Teddy was a lunatic towards him.
Biblically it pretty much says Pride comes before destruction. Mike fell in a trap yet Sadly with all the fast, slick talking managers, experts etc a young athlete even entertainer often does Not understand the terms on the CON-tract they sign and end up Conned...😮
*I had 46 amateur fights. My record was 42-4 with 3-round smoker bouts, as a Lightheavy weight at 175 lbs. I had fought Golden Gloves and made Finals at Nationals. One day, I figured it out. There are two kinds of emplyment income; Income earned, and paid benefits. Athletes only receive earned income for sacrificing their bodies. At, the end. You have paid 2/3 of your earned income to promoters and managers. While you NEVER earn any paid benefits of Pension, Health Care, Profit sharing, etc. When I understood this at 28 years old. I left my amateur boxing career behind and dismissed any Pro boxing career. Despite my Camp trying to convince me otherwise. I went onto Cal State University and became a Registered Nurse*
Mike you should really look into the whole tax thing dont 10 mil received but out of that you pay 5mil out you can write off 5mil of the 10mil as wages/expenses
Being in the hall of fame doesn't pay the bills. We hear fans talking none stop about fighters should be fighting for their legacy. Rubbish. Fighters should fight for as much money as they can to secure their and their families financial futures.
It's not just making money but also knowing how to manage it. Many of these athletes come from poor living conditions and have absolutely zero financial education, which is why they end up broke once they retire.
Legacy equals currency overtime George Foreman got the grill because of his legacy. Mike Tyson can make money off of his name because of his legacy so legacy does matter I think boxers should have unions and pension plans like all the professional athletes. Don’t even get health insurance that is criminal that they do not even get health insurance. I’m just saying compared to what other professional athletes have in terms of benefits. It is ridiculous. The boxers do not have the same benefits.
To be fair, it was the WBO belt, which at the time was basically what the IBO was in the early 2000s. (I think it´s fair to say that the IBO has lost a lot of it´s prestige)
I was a policeman for 35yrs I have a great pension and social security. If I lost any of those I would be broke. I lost my wife's pension when she died in 2016.
That was excellent Michael and I fought together in a few nationals we were in Russia together at the first Goodwill games he is a great guy and a hellava fighter
A lot of professional athletes go broke within at least five years after retirement. The ones who go broke were never taught financial responsibility in the home or in a sports organization. Instead, they get ripped off by just about everyone.
No one is required to be a professional boxer. No one seems to want to take accountability for their stupid decisions. Mikes story is the entire history of boxing and yet he felt he making a intelligent decision 😮
yup. as louis armstrong used to say, despite his big success, same folks still on top.... sad to hear this, but theres many others who went the same rout.. i knew a top contender who was promoted by the local businesses ,but when he got brain hurt, they dropped him like a hotn potato, he died in oblivion..
@@venicec3310 You can listen to him talk and tell there is some intelligence there, that he's a deep thinker. He's just not as lucid with his thoughts as he used to be. A boxing career will do that to you.
Loved Moorer back in the day. Excellent fighter, one of the best ever at Light HW. His fight with Cooper is an absolute classic! I truly hope his financial situation can be worked out. It’s horrible these guys put so much on the line to wind up broke. Boxing needs a better system
I would sue all those greedy people that took advantage of you throughout your career. You will always be champion 🏆 in my eyes and no one can take that from you. God bless you and I will keep you in my prayers champ!
Damn, 69% of the pay taken plus he was on the hook for training camps and miscellaneous things. Pure robery!!!! He also paid as if he took home the 10 mill so.... the taxes plus the 69% in fees.... There needs to be a boxing UNION asap!!!!
Until there is a boxing union, everybody just needs to sign with PBC. They have the best track record for taking care of their fighters. PBC fighters go out of their way to praise Al regularly because he makes sure he sets them up for life after boxing during their careers. Most hated by racist boxing fans, but most loved by the majority of his fighters.
Like Hagler, Crawford, and a lot others, including Zhang, a current Heavyweight, Moorer fights Southpaw but is actually Right Handed (the hand he writes with). Fighters like Spence, and others, including Wallin at Heavyweight, they're Southpaws that are actually Left Handed (the hand they write with).
My dad is 1985 WBC LightHeavy Weight Champion J.B Williamson. I’d love to watch you interview him. He has some great stories and we should get them before he’s too old. I can give you his phone number. He was just inducted into the boxing hall of fame a couple years ago.
@@keithluckett3331 he’s doing well. His memory is incredible. He has story’s about Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and many other great fighters and events! A real people’s champ! My 3 sons are really influenced by him. All 3 won jr Golden Glove tournaments this year.
Wow, I’m actually glad to hear Mr. Williamson is still alive. There have been rumors to the contrary for years because he seems to have a pretty low profile.
Keep your head up, brother Michael. Good luck on starting up a union. Congratulations on being inducted into the Hall of Fame. I remember when we were little kids, Tony Madason...RIP myself, and you would jog to and from Charleroi PA and train with your granddad...RIP Monessen Home Boz 4 life...❤ Much luv brother.
Hey Michael if you see this i was always a huge fan of yours, you were a superb, god bless you i hope everything in your future is happy and prosperous. From Dublin ☘️
filipino friends of mine went to go see manny train, moorer was a jerk to them and was unfriendly to people ... charged one of my friends a dollar for leaning against something ... the altercation was caught on hbo video previewing a manny fight
I met him at the HOF years ago, a kid asked for an autograph and he got moody! I said wtf it's just an autograph and me and him had a face off! He would've killed me lol, but he took his sunglasses off and signed a few autographs including one for me! I said thanks champ.
Thank you fighthype for this interview. I give y’all a hard time for your clickbait titles and hating on certain fighters but this was great for y’all to do. This is why when fighters like Floyd, Canelo, and gervonta ask for the pay that they know they deserve I support them getting paid and make sure I pay for the ppvs. These fighters deserve it.
This is one of the darkest, realest descriptions of what fighters went, and are still going through till this day. Hopefully they ban together and create a Union or at least life time Healthcare!!!
Great interview! I appreciate how you let him speak and express all of his thoughts. Sadly, Mr. Moorer's story is all too common in this sport. It would be great to see him partner with like-minded allies like Deontay Wilder, Andre Wilder, Floyd Mayweather, etc.
It's a well known fact that the title 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World', is the richest prize in sport. Yet we have a great former champion that won it multiple times and HOFer in a situation like this. So sad. I really feel for him, getting screwed over like that. I'm also broke, but if i'm ever in a position to help him one day i certainly will. I grew up through my teenage years watching MM, so i know how talented he was. God bless you champ and congratulations on your HOF induction, fully deserved. 👏🏻👏🏻 Sending love from England, UK 🇬🇧. 💙
Promoters and managers get a too big of a cut of the fighters money which is bs. They aren’t the ones risking their life in the ring/ training relentlessly.
The old school men NEVER talked about their accomplishments. My father was an undefeated amateur fighter in DC and Golden Glove champion at Light Heavyweight in the 1950's.
@@IceJohnScully I'm from Louisville, which is why I know about the Ohio and Indiana state fairs. I was in the Army for some time but setting in NW Georgia. Do you have your own channel?
@@jjrob2738 yes I have my own RU-vid channel. Lots of boxing stuff as you can imagine. I was in Louisville in March 2016 visiting Muhammad Ali‘s childhood home and the Muhammad Ali Center.
Thank you for sharing this interview. I remember running into Michael a few times around Detroit. Always a nice laid back unassuming guy. Great interview. So sorry to hear of his financial troubles
The manager is obviously taking too much. Probably 10% would be more reasonable. But if Moorer had invested his money in the stock market and/or real estate he would be worth millions today and never would have had to worry about affording medical insurance.

I understand everything that Michael Moorer is saying but, you should have voiced his frustrations and made things right when he was at the top of his game... That's when he could have made the changes to secure better purses. Roy Jones took control of his career and pretty much promoted himself for a long time and make sure he got the bulk of his money. Michael Moorer had a reputation of only training when he wanted to and when he felt like it. No one wanted to train him and Teddy Atlas had to will him to win his championship fight against evander holyfield. Teddy Atlas is more famous for his corner rant than Michael Moorer was for that fight.
Michael Moorer was always a class act. One of the great Kronk fighters under Emmanual Steward. I always admired Michael Moorer and respected his abilities in the ring. His biggest weakness as a fighter I believe was his chin. He was really more of a light heavyweight, to be honest, even though he made the decision to move to heavyweight.
*Michael Moorer was an incredible boxer* and the first southpaw to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. With titles in both light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions and a record of 52 wins (40 by knockout), his skill and power were unmatched. His victory over Evander Holyfield is legendary. Moorer's induction into the Hall of Fame is well-deserved. Congratulations, Michael Moorer! 🥊🏆 #BoxingLegend #HallOfFame
Michael, you have a good NAME. 1. Example: Come up with your own unique type of electrolyte drink 2. Partner with an investor 3. Hire beverage consultant to help create the product (name, colors, flavors etc) 4. Put it in stores in hot/warm climate areas. My family owned a supermarket in Louisiana for 49 years. All electrolyte drinks sold incredibly well as long as it didn't taste bad. LET'S GO CHAMP!!
@@warrenlewis3977 💯😁True, true but it sounds like he doesn't want any part of the boxing business. Sports drinks are one of the easiest sales in a store and no store has every drink anyway, but of course it doesn't have to be a drink at all.
Turki should do a Legends event for fighters like Michael. Exhibition fights to give these guys a payday. It's so sad how fighters are exploited, particularly from the past.
Michael Moorer is a nice guy but professional boxing is a business; amateur boxing is an alternative. People choose to sign boxing contracts or not to sign contracts. Investors expect a return on their financial investment in boxers; its business not a charity. Why should you expect others to take a financial risk on your career without a return on their investment.
Always been a fan and thought you should have gotten more respect before, but glad you are finally getting your due. Now that you are getting notoriety you will find opportunities for income. You will be OK. Keep in prayer and I will pray for you. Put on the armor of God and Stand.....Thank you Michael for just being you and for your career.
He was 22-0 at one time! Hes nothing to blink at with a confused stare! He's a legit badass and the real wealth is your health. I surely hope that even though hes broke that hes happy, content and in touch with his inner Soul and Lord Christ Jesus. Most of us cant handle large amounts of wealth, sometimes being working class or lower tier poor isnt a curse of bad thing. There are many humble families in Mexico who have very little and eat beans snd rice daily but are healthy and happy
@@bmcarpetcleaningandfloorca4410 Truth! I have an old Ring Magazine titled The Best of '88 somewhere that he was on the cover of along with Tyson, Leonard and Nunn. I believe he was 12-0 and had just won his first world title at that time....great memories...
I was a huge MM Fan I watched him all the way from Tuesday Night Fights ESPN All the way through becoming Champion and reigning as Champion He was super skilled tuff He was one of the most balanced well rounded Heavyweights of all time.
@@SportsSharp412 boxers should have unions just like other professional athletes. It is the most dangerous sport to participate in and they get less benefits that is backwards. This is a sad interview. It’s not how much money you make it how much money you keep unfortunately it is the people living off of other peoples talent making money from what Michael says glorified con men living off of other peoples talent exploitation is wrong and unethical
My guess is that a lot of people, even just casual sports fans, remember exactly where they were when Foreman landed that punch and knocked Michael Moorer out. That and when people heard or watched Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson. It was that shocking.
Induction into the Hall of Fame of ANY sport should include some kind of pension for those members in need, drawn from that Hall's endowment. Surely donations would be plentiful if a nonprofit were set up by the Hall for this specific purpose.
I think Moore should write a book and inform the public about things he and others went through in those days and probably the second one, based on the success of the first, where he outlines things that go wrong in the sport and advise present boxers on how they can better take care of their business! I know promoters are very shrewed and some cruel to their fighters, but never knew that managers were also part of the problem. He does sound like an honest brother, bigups to him and good luck on his future endeavors within the boxing world... I wish he could get himself contracted to helping young fighters either as a manager or trainer. He is deserving of a Hall of Fame!
Classy guy and great champ , he sounds a lot better than some but boxing sure does take it's toll.Stay fit and strong champ , being totally broke is no good , but if you got a little bit of money, your health family friends and a few hobbies are worth much more than all the money in the world.
I'm shocked he wasn't already in the hall of fame. One of the best light heavyweights in the history of boxing, and went up to heavyweight to become world champion while defeating several of the best fighters that division had to offer at the time!
That's it d*** shame. They need To hold congressional hearings on this topic. Whatever district boxing boxing is held in. The congressional. Leader of that. District to go to Congress in Washington and hold hearing on why these boxers are not getting paid and why this is happening Point blank. on this
This is the most beautiful interview I have ever heard. It taught me that all of my favorite boxers were destroyed . Now that my heart is broken I hope that Jesus helps Michael Moore through the pain he is still suffering from the boxing world. He was indeed beautiful in the ring
@@brimcilroy9002 Well first of all - regarding the video - I'm sure we agree we want fairness for MM. The other thing - OK. Reach if you ever want discuss.
Yeah I hope that interview gets attention and all the boxers need to come together and make some demands because they're definitely getting mistreated and their the ones putting their lives on the line. U got some fighters with all that money buying dumb shit instead of trying to start Unions and getting some type of benefits for boxers after retirement. Something gotta give!
I grew up in it starting at 7-8yrs old at the YMCA. Had a bunch of amateur bouts, figured out going Pro wasn't practical for me. Loved it and have been around it off/on most of my life with a fair number of guys I knew who did turn Pro. I'm 100% on MM and all the ex Pro's side struggling or not. However, sometimes because of tough situations guys don't negotiate their contracts properly in the beginning and they end up on the short end. I gotta say though, it's not like you did it completely blind, because it's not like it isn't talked about, alot! It's was pounded in our heads like punches, how much these managers/ handlers/promoters were sharks, constantly, it's not a surprise!EVERY teenager around that was showing potential it was a Huge topic of discussion.
Good to see Moorer. Also, glad to see him make it to the boxing HOF. Moorer, also broke down the shady deals some boxers had or maybe still have to go through. Smh.
I agree they should have another heavyweight division for men 250 and over or so and i agree also about thicker gloves too and i think maybe they should make the fights 10 rounds instead of 12 round fights
There's plenty of blame to go around Michael's financial problems, from Attorney hired to protect Michael's best interest to Financial advisors with fiduciary duties. But as Michael admitted his know it all attitude was probably biggest down fall.
