Michael O'Donoghue (January 5, 1940 - November 8, 1994) was an American writer and performer. He was known for his dark and destructive style of comedy and humor, and was a major contributor to National Lampoon magazine. He was the first head writer of Saturday Night Live and the first performer to deliver a line on the series.

This is from an episode of Midday with Bill Boggs, a local NYC program. O'Donoghue was one of the most savage writers National Lampoon Magazine ever had. By the time he came to SNL's debut in 1975 as head writer (with Chevy Chase), he had already established himself as, like other Lampoon writer/editors such as the equally legendary Doug Kenney, one of America's greatest satirists. Belushi had also worked with O'Donoghue on the Lampoon Radio Hour in 1973. Most forget that all SNL really was when it debuted was National Lampoon Magazine, the TV version.

O’Donoghue is criminally underrated, and in a world that reveres contemporary comedy so much people should know more about him. They should teach O’Donoghue in schools to children. He’d love that.

Wow, thanks for this interview! At 4:22, they brought performers on drugs and he instantly tried to think of what to say while looking down and at 7:02, talked on how they affect stage presence and at this time he was already 2-3 years into his cocaine/heroin addiction. If only he wasn’t in denial and had the knowledge to stop. There’s not many of like them and won’t ever be. He was so talented, loved by so many, and a huge influence on some of the greatest actors and comedians that have walked the earth.... and so far ahead of his time. I was so hurt hearing he died on the news... He impacted so many. Unfortunately, just like Farley, they both had certain personas they had to live up to on the camera. He was one of the biggest stars in the comedy scene at his time and drugs were plentiful, free (or cheap), and I’m sure he got the strongest of them during the 70s - early 80s. When you are being offered and given drugs almost everywhere became a serious addiction fast and he struggled for 7 slow and, in my opinion, miserable years until his death. With his addiction and the field of work he was in, it becomes a life line for every problem- ie. mood, long hours of work, anxieties, stage freight, confidence, sleep deprivation, depression etc. When you don’t the drugs as a life line, he probably could not see himself as the same comedian and person he was not only on camera but in everyday life to cause an inevitable death. If only he didn’t hang out with Cathy that night, she shot him up with 11 speedballs and finished by injecting him with straight heroin. He is missed by many even to this day and his work will forever be eternalized. Rest In Peace Bluto/Joliet. Forever a legend.

13 to 18 speedball injections is enough to kill 5 people. Especially since he wasn't used to using the needle. I heard it was 13 shots but some people claim it was as many as 18.

Belushi did do an Elvis impression occasionally, but Kaufman actually became Elvis. belushi also did a foreign man character on the first ever SNL sketch, which is another parallel between the two. These guys are beyond full of themselves. Steve Allen is smarter than anyone else sitting there. Two telling things about Belushi; as soon as female performers/writers were brought up at 2:00, he said "forget it; they won't come, they said they don't like you". According to Jane Curtain, Belushi went out of his way to prevent women writer's material from being used on the show, saying "women can't be funny", right in front of their faces; including Jane Curtain and the others. The Only female performer he didn't insult was Gilda Radner, for some unknown reason. Also, at 8:00, Belushi says "You're overemphasizing this whole drug use thing". Belushi got to the point where he was so stoned he could barely perform during the show, and died from a heroin overdose four years after this. Here's the eerie part: they wrote a part for Belushi on the show called "Don't Look Back in Anger", shot in black and white, where he plays an old 80 year-old Jewish version of himself, at a cemetery, where all the other SNL performers were buried. He'd outlived them all. He goes over to Garrett Morris's grave and says "poor Garrett; died of a heroin overdose in 1980". He got a big laugh from that. John Belushi died of a heroin overdose in 1982.
