I was a Memphis Police Officer and I had the occassion of meeting this gentleman when he was in highschool at Briarcrest here in Memphis. He had a white Ford F-150. I meet his biological mother as well. This guy was just as intelligent and articulate then as he is now. I did not know who he was until one of my coworkers that followed sports saw his name and asked him was he "The Michael Oher" he was the epitome of confidence. I instantly liked this kid so much so, that I came home and could not stop talking about my chance encounter with this young man. i broke departmental policy by allowing Mr. Oher to ride in the front seat of my squad car. I believe everything he says and though I am much older, coming from the streets of Memphis, I have the utmost respect for this young man. Mr. Oher I was a fan then, and I am a fan now. It’s actually disgusting to think about what Michael has endured from judgement alone. I wish this man justice

It was that white family.. They are the ones that lied about everything.. They never even adopted him and tricked him into signing away his life..They stole millions of dollars from him..
Honestly, the movie didn't make sense to me. The family was portrayed of being a "savior" while he was a "hapless" kid. No way someone achieves what he has without smarts, grit, and tenacity. Incredibly well-spoken dude. Good for him. Can't wait to read his book.
This family saved this guys life- he was one of 11 kids - mom crack addict and he was living on streets and is on thankful and foolish. It’s a bad scene for him. He spent all his money he wasted his $$ and he’s trying to shake down his family. It’s sinful.
He was given everything, he’s a liar. He’s not smart with his money. Burnt thru it and now he wants MORE. He wouldn’t be where he’s at without them. Prolly in the streets. On drugs.
Its was cool to hear in the beginning, When Michael said when Ray Lewis announced his retirement to the team, the rest of the guys step up and wanted Ray to win one last ring, send him out as a Super Bowl Champ. That shows how much respected Ray was
If he's so smart why didn't he get his own attorney before the movie came out? I've seen other interviews he knew he could not be legally adopted because he was 18. Plus there could very well be something in the dad's side of the family that prevented it legally. Insurance with added dependants gets tricky. Also this was always something LeAnn pushed more. What if there was a prenuptial that prevented adoption? Do you think Angelina Jolie would have adopted more kids if she was married to a lighting guy on one of her movies? ( my friend who's a lighting guy met and had a baby with Sherilyn Fenn from Twin Peaks. Big $ mess. He's been working on Grey's Anatomy since the show started. The daughter mostly lives with him ) Angelina adopted another kid knowing Brad Pitt would be legally tied to that child FOREVER. The husband owns Taco Bells. What is LeAnn him and the kids died in a car accident. Maybe there was something legally or in the family's legacy where the partners or other family didn't want Michael Orr and his REAL siblings ( he's got a huge real family just because his parents died- he's got other real siblings still ) Maybe they didn't want/ insurance prevented them from risking everything ending up with a completely different family. A family with no business management that could and likely would if we're being honest- drive the business into the ground. It takes ninja discipline to make any restaurant a success- even if it is a franchise like Taco Bell. Lastly rich people think differently. Trust me my dad's worth 20 M There are no free rides in my family. We all work for what we have first

A lot of us share that same struggle with drug addicted parents. We mature quicker & grow up fast. Me as a kid I couldn't understand why my parents couldn't be responsible & this little tiny "Pebble thing" made them do such crazy things. They eventually became irresponsible, lost their damn minds, car, house. We "me & my siblings" became the parent and they were the kids. We got jobs or had some type of hustle mowed lawns, delivered papers, cleaned up parking lots, shoveled snow ETC......"WHAT DON'T BREAK US, MAKES US STRONGER 💪🏽
It was the same for me. I washed cars, did lawn work, and sold newspapers, and chocolates door to door. I even sold my baseball and basketball ball cards. My biological mother was so gone that she was only nice to me when I had money 🤑💰 to turn over to her. Even if it was $5,$10, $20. Because of this abuse I separated from my mother but encountered toxic women who were users especially when it came to money. I had to accept my childhood neglect. Instead of falling for money users I now despise them and distance myself. You mention how the children become grownups and the grownups are the children is 💯.
The CIA funneled crack cocaine specifically to your parents neighborhoods. I think every single one of you children of crack addicted parents is owed a lot of compensation from the federal government, but you know that’ll never happen and I’m really sorry for that. I’m glad you and your siblings made it out in once piece and have succeeded in spite of such a tremendous disadvantage. Best of luck to you in your life.

I like that he’s trying to send the message of “you don’t need someone to save you to make something of yourself” as many kids in foster care wont have someone come save them and will age out of the system. They need inspiration and the story of a kid in foster care who fought for himself *and* took whatever help he was able to (inconsistently) get while growing up is a more inspiring story for many than the one we were given from the movie
I am definitely going to buy Michael Oher's book. He is highly intelligent and self-aware. Respectful of his upbringing and "families" involved in assisting him in getting him where he is today. I will say that Mr. Oher handled the Tuohy family with dignity and respect.
Not enough praise goes to Hugh Freeze (his HS head coach) and Steve Simpson (the principle of Briarcrest) for making an exception for big Mike. Most kids with a 0.7 GPA & no means to pay tuition would have been turned away
He handed with dignity and respect. He showed none. He has no class and disrespected the family who gave him a chance to play football. He would of never survive without them and this us how he shows is gratitude. The toy family was already rich. They sold there business for 200 million dollars. Thry didn't need his money
I'm just wondering why he was portrayed as almost mentally challenged in the film.. when he is obviously really intelligent. For any 'parents' to allow that to happen, they never fully had his best interests at heart...
As an adopted person, the one thing I know for certain, an adopted persons timeline on doing things will always seem out of sorts, and illogical. The trauma of abandonment haunts you for a lifetime.
He never needed them to become the great man he is and always was. Speak the truth, Michael! Damn, some of you are mad that I praised this man. There’s always someone with a problem no matter what you say or how inoffensive it is lol.
there are 3 factors working simultaneously against Oher, his memoir that states in his own words that he knew he was under conservatorship (as a shield to protect him from his cocaine addicted mother, his 11 siblings and his father that he does not know from coming to sue him), 2- why at the age of 37 yo to read the court documents? why you wait so long? 3- Oher was present with the attorney with the twoys that under conservatorship he was able to play football under the Tennessee law and it was spelled out in court documents that he SIGNED. This is the critical part is that he signed the papers and if you know the law whatever you sign you understood what you are doing, except if you're a woman claiming under duress from signing a pre-nup which is all BS but that's for another time.
He thought conservatorship was adoption. He didn’t understand at 18 all the technical legalities, which means that his finances would belong to the Tuohy’s for the rest of his life. Conservator’s also have the right to use his money or image for their use and not need to ask him for permission, which they did. They get to profit from him without him getting a piece of the profit. At 18, did you know what a conservatorship was?
So a family that sold their franchise for $200 million, took this young boy in, wrote a book about him had no idea this book was going to be picked up for a movie. They had no idea that this young man was going to be picked up for the NFL And now people are saying that they owe him a couple hundred thousand dollars. They did this out of love. And he is losing or has lost the only family that truly loved him. He sounds Very ungrateful.
May God continue to bless and guide Michael. When he talked about being good at reading body language, why he had to be, and purposely being the same and positive for people in those situations; that hit my heart. I can't imagine having to take all that on as a child, as well as everything else he dealt with. Much respect to him for his hard work, dedication, and drive to improve his circumstances.
The family was worth hundreds of millions way before this so called conservatorship and this movie money why would they need money off of a movie. More like he needs controversy for publicity to sell his book. Because like most retired nfl players with no skills beyond sportsball hes probably close to being broke.
I heard that he didn’t like how he was portrayed in the movie. But, this is the first time I’ve seen him in an interview. I would be LIVID about this situation too. Stay Blessed Michael you have a lot to be proud of.

I'm not taking sides, the truth is in the middle somewhere, but Hollywood isn't exactly known for accurate depictions of real life stories. They are gonna embellish the truth, make things more dramatic than usual, they made Titanic seem romantic for crying out loud.
Wow, I watched this simply to see if he was remotely intelligent, assuming he was likely borderline intellectually disabled. It's really unfortunate how the film portrayed him - and disturbing how much faith we put in Hollywood depictions - but I'm glad to see him thriving.
It was a movie not a documentary. He said he was involved in the movie and didn't receive royalties so he must have had an idea of how he is being portrayed.
your comment is deceiving. The movie never portrayed him as borderline intellectually disabled. It was shown he struggled at school because he didn't believe in himself and his capabilities but as soon as he got a tutor and believed in himself he managed to have good grades and get the GPA to be eligible to play in the NCAA. So your comment is an exaggeration.
I don't know in his first book he said he liked the movie. Now he says the movie hurt his career even though he had a good career and made over 60 million dollars. Honestly though nobody knows the truth we have only heard from him.
He was never portrayed as illiterate or unintelligent in the Blind Side. In it, he was portrayed as a student who wrote impressive prose, absorbed everything he heard, and understood all the nuances around him.
The interviewer did so good! A class act. Respect and delicate but still asked the question to get an answer and didn’t have to pry or linger! That’s a professional 🫡
@@johnjhnson82 He was also failing out of school and hadn't yet developed a routine. They hired a tutor for him...bought his food and clothes so he wasn't worried about going meal to meal. The truth will come out. There are way too many inconsistencies regarding this. & the inconsistencies are coming from Michael. This family had & has $ & didn’t need Michael’s $. They gave him a place to stay, gave him tutors to catch up on his education so that he would be eligible to play college football & gave him food & most importantly stability so that he could succeed. Why now? Does he want another movie? Is he broke? ??? Why now? This family opened up their home who had a daughter the same age. How many people do that? The conservatorship was there so that it would protect Michael. I agree… it’s weird that that there is still one in place. The truth will come out, & I don’t think it’s going to be in Michael’s best interest.
I'm sure there are a lot of needy kids, why didn't the family take any of them in? How does a conversatorship "protect" him? Do you know what a conservatorship entails? Do you know how Oher's conservatorship was granted? When you can answer these questions, come back and tell us you wouldn't be pissed
I agree with a conservatorship till he was 25, but why did they tell him and the world it was an adoption? And he only found out now at 37 they have legal rights to put him in an institution, sold his likeness and image without him getting compensated for that and not tell him they have rights to his money until HE found out 20 years later. That is very shady.
I'm very stunned at what I heard. People were bashed him saying that he wasn't grateful to the family. He's so sincerely said he was grateful to everyone who helped them along the way. But just that it was wrong that they portrayed him in a different light in the movie. Who wouldn't be mad at that? Now I wonder if all the people who talk bad about him not being grateful are going to eat crow now. And most of those wasn't his same skin tone either.
The man was used! Its so obvious and clear. The sad part is that he was used on so many levels. God knows the motives when even good deeds are done! Now the truth is really coming out about the family. If the story was truly about Michael. Why does the Toughys children get any money? Also, They said, the only reason for the conservatorship was so he can play football for their alamotor. He was an all American when they met him. They saw the potential he had and took advantage of a situation. This is truly sad!
@@cliffordleslie4692 Ah yes how sad is it that he was taken in by a family that loved him and helped him out. All this time they were taking advantage of him but now he takes the opportunity to ‘stand up’ for himself? I doubt he was oblivious to such mistreatment for so long and just blew his nfl money.
Exactly! I saw someone had typed that they( White people) are always pretending to help someone black. I feel like without the support of the family he would never be where he is at now. That family owned 117 fast food restaurants. At that time and still the family is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They wanted to help him and they did.
True. Still, they should not have the legal right to his money, sell his image or likeness and profit from it without his consent, or have the right to have him put in a mental institution at age 37 (that is a conservatorship). And they lied to him saying they adopted him legally.
It's literally what the movie portrayed them as taking advantage of him in the meeting at the end. He thought he was family but he ultimately became a meal ticket.

@renise011 Well, it seems you don't know much about Ohr's situation as he was enrolled into private school basically due to pity after failing to complete a semester of home study, but because of these pre-qualifications from the Headmaster it took him out of the public school system. The Headmaster basically felt guilty that he would have been the reason that Ohr would have had zero schooling unless he enrolled him anyways. The point of conservatorships is that the conservatee is underage, mentally unfit or physically unfit to manage their activities.
