Everyone is looking at Penix’s film and completely judging him off that. Which of course I understand, but I think people aren’t paying attention to how much of a winner this man is. Washington was 4-8 the year before he came. Two years later they’re the 2nd best team in the nation. That is pretty insane. Even with the holes in his film he is an absolute winner. And I like Odunze but everyone saying he had great recievers around him, make sure you look at their stats the years before Penix came.

As someone who watched every game he played over the past two years I’m telling you he is that dude. Sure there were times where is inconsistency could be maddening but he was playing with messed up ribs when that usually occurred. He didn’t scramble because he didn’t need to and they didn’t want to risk an injury, he can definitely do it. The kid is a winner, everyone is talking about the great WRs he had, he made them great. Rome and JMac are definitely NFL talents and Polk is decent but their play was elevated because of Penix, Rome would not be a 1st round pick if Penix wasn’t throwing him the ball. If Penix had played in the SEC y’all would be all over his talent. I’d love it if the Hawks draft him at 16, the kid is going to be a difference maker at the next level.

I like the analysis but you and many others aren’t paying enough attention to what doesn’t show up on a stat sheet. Pre snap manipulation, post snap progression, looking off defenders, moving safeties with his eyes, getting the ball out quickly, those are things that Michael is second to none. You touched on Penix identifying one on one’s maybe without noticing when you called, “point and shoot”, but you’re discrediting what Penix does at a high level. Go watch the tape and watch him manipulate guys with his eyes and just turn on a dime and rip a hole shot to guy on the opposite side of the field for a TD. Kurt Warner did the same thing in his eval, he says, “what a throw, I don’t know how he knew that guy was gonna be open, maybe he trusted the route”. It’s because he’s actively reading his progressions, lightning fast, and he’s holding people in place to open up throws. He does this time and time again on film and none of these other overhyped guys do. Maye is a mess half the time and completely uncomfortable. CW has choppy footwork and completely indecisive when actually reading a defense. Go watch CW work through reads and then watch Penix and see how many times CW hesitates and hitches. Penix is twice as fast on progressions it’s actually amazing. Another thing I will continue to criticize is this idea that Penix had this all star cast. Who were these guys before Penix came to town? A bunch of scrubs. Look it up. Yes even Odunze struggled before MP. Suddenly MP Carrie’s a team no one had into the Natty and all of the sudden they’re great? Penix makes his cast better.

One misconception about his age is that he was a late break-out and that it only clicked once he got to UW. He thoroughly defeated Michigan with his arm in 2020, and his stats from 2019 show that from an early age his best talent has been attacking downfield with high YPA and completion percentage. That being said, I'm exactly like you guys in that I can't decide what he'll be in the league. I think can lead a team to the playoffs, but the lack of touch and his chaotic base could hold him back from being a great player.

@@mikearnold1322 I guess you don't watch much football. Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts have all played a higher % of career games than Joe Burrow. So being a running QB isn't much of a factor in durability these days. The fact is that every QB, no matter their playstyle, will get banged up. Every QB that sustained a season ending injury in this past season was a pocket passer. Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Herbert.
@redd9802
@redd9802 23 дня назад
Completion percentage against pressure is an incomplete stat. If there is a stat out there, you guys probably know about it, but the comparable should be something like on base percentage. A quarterback that throws the ball away against pressure and doesn’t take sacks (especially in early downs) is exactly what you want as a quarterback. So sacks and completions for no gains or less should also be counted against completion percentage against pressure. In other words, completion percentage against pressure on 1st down is a largely irrelevant measure as you would much rather a QB throw the ball away than take a loss or risk a turnover. On 3rd down it is much more relevant, but again should be adjusted for field position. When in field goal range, a good quarterback throws the ball away rather than risk loss or turnover.

His football IQ will serve him well. Don't think he's gonna be a 2 way threat QB though, he is a classic style pocket passer through and through. As far as his arm though, he can throw serious heat and he can deliver those touch throws on a dime. His arm is on that level of a Warren Moon. There is so much upside to his game that in the not so distant future many teams that didn't take him when they had the chance will be remorseful they didn't take him. He's 24 and a bit more mature than his counterparts in the draft, some think this is a knock against him, but since Atlanta's QB Cousins is getting over an achilles tear, it's likely Penix will be starting sooner than later and he will be more calm than the others when he does move up to start games.

If he slips past the 15th pick, the whole league should be fired. There are 3-4 prospects every year that don't have intermediate and deep accuracy that get drafted top 10 no problem and never pan out. Not only can Penix do everything NFL coaches want to do in today's passing game but it's his FASTBALL, and everyone passes on him for a kid who has a 3rd down tape you can fit in an IG story. It's bullshit. I'd draft him over everyone except Caleb. He absolutely sold me in the playoff games. Warts and all. Not at all surprised he ran and jumped well, the narrative that he, in his early 20s, had lost his athleticism because of his injuries never made sense to me. He moves incredibly well in the pocket, has great balance, is clearly a good athlete - now that he's shown he has that zu-zu and simply didn't use it because he wants to throw lasers to his dudes down the field only has me believing more that he's going to be a star. Not really, and his deep completion rate was also the lowest of all of the guys being considered in the top 3 rounds as well. Penix had arguably the best OL in college football and one of the best WRs in college football to throw to. Basically, he usually had just enough time to throw YOLO bombs to Odunze and Odunze made it work because he's a freak. And checking it down in that situation is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Snake Stabler was left handed. Steve Young too.
@user-zr4km5ns8t
@user-zr4km5ns8t Месяц назад
It's hard to compare players across different different teams and offensive systems, let alone eras. Steve Young was one of the best scrambling/mobile QBs who ever played & could evade the rush. He was also blessed to be in a system where he could get the ball out quickly. In spite of that, he suffered a high sack percentage for the first 7 years he was in the NFL. Stabler played when the offenses in the NFL were mostly ground based. In his breakout season in 1973 the Raiders ran the ball 547 times & passed it only 373 times, a nearly 60%-40% run-pass ratio. By contrast the Ravens were the most run-heavy team in the league in 2023 at 52% & they were one of only 3 teams who ran more than they passed. Being run heavy protects a QB from sacks. But in the 1970s NFL defenses were designed mostly to stop the run. Pass rushing defensive ends were usually installed at RDE. The era of linebacker/edge rushers who could run like wide receivers & set up on either side of the LOS like Von Miller did in Denver had not evolved yet. The problem with left handed passers is that having one makes it mandatory to find a right tackle who can pass block like a left tackle. You also need two of them, one to back up the starter if he's hurt. Those guys are very difficult to find. It's hard enough to find a great pass blocking LT. In the current draft, only Georgia's Amarius Mims is considered a candidate for either tackle spot. Whoever drafts Penix has to figure out how to protect him, & as we have already seen, this guy is fragile. At Washington he was barely touched behind the best line in the country. That won't be the case in the NFL, especially if he has to play behind a team that hasn't solved the RT problem.

You guys are making a lot of assumptions here and not paying attn to the small smart details of the position. I watched all his games at UW. His anticipation is elite. Reading and recognition elite. His big issue is when he gets to much success early in a game he falls in love with the bombs and doesn’t take the easy drop offs or what the D is giving him. Fixable. Watching him in person I can’t explain how the ball just explodes from his arm. Never have I watch a college qb with so much anticipation when he lets it go. I just know 5 or 6 times a game I’m going to see something amazing. It’s cool. Comparatively it’s light and day how much better he was than any QB he played against. He beat Caleb. Beat Nix. Played so many great teams this year. UW had no business in the playoff without him with the lack of blue chips they had on that team. He lifted them.

@@jooglebob So, you're going to draft a QB based on what he HASN'T done (yet) instead of what they HAVE done. Just because Penix has shown far better QB skills (so far) doesn't mean anything, right. You're going to draft Maye and McCarthy based on what your crystal ball says they WILL do if given more time, and also ASSUMING Penix will never get any better. Yeah that really worked out with Zach Wilson, ASSUMING he would develop traits that he never had in the first place. The media just feeds you these dumb ideas and you just happily eat them up. smh
@jooglebob
@jooglebob Месяц назад
@@broq9194 This is also the same logic that made teams pass on Josh Allen, Pat Mahomes, Jordan Love, and Lamar Jackson. They were raw and needed development time, and personally I hated Allen and Love because they were inaccurate and made a lot of mistakes. There are several busts of that ilk like Wilson, Trey Lance, Malik Willis and more but you can't throw out the baby with the bathwater. I've made that mistake in my draft analysis before and I'm trying to learn from it. Doesn't mean you can blindly run after tools like with Lance but compared to the past busts I mentioned, I think McCarthy/Maye are way farther along than they were at this point. And it's not that I hate Penix, I have a late 1st round grade on him and I think he will be a starting QB in this league. I think Bo Nix is the one who will flop, reminds me of Mac Jones but with a lesser arm and more mobility. It is difficult comparing a QB who has been a starter for 6 years compared to M&M's 2 years each.
@broq9194
@broq9194 Месяц назад
@@jooglebob Nuff said. Never said Maye and McCarthy were not "potentially" good QBs. Which NFL prospect is not "potentially" a good QB? Draft analysis and fan opinion is highly suspect however when you ignore demonstrated talent, ability, and production in favor of crystal ball projections of what you think a QB "might" do or "maybe could" do if this or that. Every year, some QBs are graded on "potential" and others are graded on their flaws. If Maye or McCarthy demonstrated the passing ability of Penix they would NO DOUBT be the #1 QBs in this draft, yet Penix gets graded on his flaws instead of his ability. Certain QBs get placed in positions to win and others get thrown to the wolves. Lamar Jackson demonstrated everything he needed to succeed in college and his only real flaw was simple footwork which affected his release point and accuracy, an easy fix even for a high school QB. He never should have been given a low first round grade, and I said it from the very beginning. Patrick demonstrated amazing arm talent and accuracy in college but was too much of a gun slinger, so I think he was drafted in a pretty good place. Josh Allen had instances of crazy inaccuracy and really poor decision making and played against poor competition in college and I wouldn't have drafted him. Allen is a fluke, not the norm. Maye is similar to Allen, but also very similar to Zach Wilson, so we have no idea. McCarthy has been a game manager throwing 17 balls a game and mostly handing the ball off and now he's supposed to lead an NFL franchise with 40 throws a game? And these guys are rated over Penix? It's ridiculous and you can try and justify it anyway you want. I won't even list Penix's superior attributes because I'm tired of writing.

@@broq9194 hi - there is no doubt Penix was better than what was there before, as was the new offensive scheme he led - and yes, i watched him a bunch; i kind of have to - his accuracy was inconsistent, and yes, his receivers bailed him out a bunch; but i wouldn't say they made him - but he's more arm strength than arm talent - he's best outside the numbers and/or deep, when the NFL is won over the middle and/or intermediate - his deep/outside game would have to be a transcendent solution to the current NFL defenses for that to pay off the way his truthers seem to think it will (unless the truthers think he is actually very good over the middle, which would be odd) - in fact, there are plays where his first read is outside and he skips other progressions to to go the other outside guy bc he doesn't like throwing over the middle... and his P2S rate is great, but that's also bc he throws it away the second there's pressure - we don't want that in FF QBs - we need it more balanced... my facts are fine, and the beauty of this is that it's subjective and fun and we have differences of opinion watching the same guy - imo he doesn't belong in the NFL 1st rd - the NFL is dumb w/QBs, so he may be there, at which point i will have a couple shares bc that asset class retains value, and i've already taken a couple shares in best ball, but will be below market - this is what we call a balanced, sober approach to it... results could be different; i'm not an oracle, but it's very odd to me a QB like him has a hive outside of Huskies fans.... even Josh & Hayden seem to not know what to make of him; it's not like he's a slam dunk

Excluding his game against Texas which was an anomaly in this department, Penix had the worst pocket mobility of all of the guys being considered in the top 3 rounds which really concerns me. Also, he had probably the best supporting group possible, with a tackle who might go top 10, and a WR who almost assuredly will go top 10. He's a bizarre player, worth an upside shot in round 3 but he's too risky to draft as your plan A. I think he would be good on a team with an underperforming veteran, like the Saints. Running fast & jumping high is not what makes an athletic QB. Penix didn't run in college because he will get injured if he does. I keep seeing people talking about his knee injuries, but it's not his knees that are the biggest problem, it's his shoulders. Penix had sternoclavicular & acromioclavicular joint injuries, one for each shoulder. That kind of injury can lead to a weakening of the shoulder & the fact that he suffered two of them & never lasted more than 6 games in a season before he got to Washington where he was almost never touched in the pocket is a major concern. There is no way this guy can or should be using his legs in the NFL to do more than hop around a few steps to avoid the rush. There should be an expectation that it will probably happen again, very likely more than once. Mobility in the NFL is not about how fast you are for quarterbacks. It's about the ability to take good angles, recognize pressure before it arrives & seeing the whole field. Some of the slower QBs have the best mobility. Spencer Rattler is a good example. His 40 time is not impressive, but he's super smart with how he sees the field, can "feel" the rush & has great instincts. Penix does not have those things based on anything I have seen on his film.
