Ajith Kanniah Do they have 18 gold medals in the Olympics? I'm guessing no. Tell me if anyone in any of those fields dominated for 16 YEARS STRAIGHT. Once again I'm guessing no. Do any of those people hold 6 world records? I'm guessing no.
I still say this is his most dominant performance at any Olympics. It is unheard of for a guy to win the 200m free by 2 seconds. Simply unreal. It almost makes me wish he chose to swim the 400m free as well. I wonder if he could've won the gold in that event. I know he already had an unbelievably heavy load with his 8 events, but it really makes me wonder.
He does that so he can do more underwater dolphin kicks after the turn. You are allowed up to 15 meters of subkicks after each turn. Going deeper helps you stay underwater longer and makes you go faster. If he didn't go as deep, he'd surface too quickly. I wish there was a 50 meter underwater dolphin kick event in the olympics. Those times would be crazy. It's probably not an event for safety reasons. Training for an event like that could be dangerous.
His turns were absolutly insane. Before that race freestyle swimmers normally dolphin kicked the first 4-5 meters, but Phelps used the whole 12,5m at every turn - insane.
I remember switching from biathlons to triathlons, and realizing I wasn't in shape at all, swimming is a whole other level of fitness, but master swimming and it will change your body competely. Dam I still get goosebumps watching Phelps, just a beast, and always in beast mode.
What is interesting in this race is that Paul Biedermann couldn't even come close to Phelps, yet, a year after that course, he broke the-still standing-world record in Rome. Great improvement within a year.
That's because he (and a lot of others) started wearing supersuits around this period.. i think Beidermann dropped 4 seconds of his time by wearing one within a year.. crazy how they completely changed swimming.. no wonder they banned them.. Phelps never believed in them and never wore one.. that's how Beidermann beat him in the 200m at Rome world championships (i think?)
I just realized the three greatest legends all have the same first name Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan and the greatest of the three Michael Jackson. Besides usain bolt he is an animal
L' ho sempre ammirato. Una meraviglia di atleta.... lo avrei visto con la Pellegrini....ma, dal punto di vista atletico perche' ha una splendida moglie. Una meraviglia.
The greatest olympic athlete ever...Mark Spitzs seven gold medal seven world recore performance in 72 in Munich would not even have qualified to make the Olympic Team in Beijing...Phelps was simply unstoppable his achievements will stand for a very long time...
It is just impressive of how much of physical condition they gotta prepare for. My respects for these swimmers. I can barely swim 20ft and I'm about to explode 😆.
It depends. Hungary has had many amazing swimmers (olympic medals, world records, etc) and has only 10 million people. The US has close to 400 million.
