Olympic great Michael Phelps races a 'great white shark' on Sunday as part of . The shark was in-fact a computer simulation rather than a actual great white but its swim speed was calculated using data collected from the real thing. Phelps finished the 100m course in 38 seconds, two second slower than the 'shark'

Had he not used the tail they made his constant travel at a highly strenuous level would have only been 5 miles approximately verses the sharkt.. There is no way he would have beaten any of them..we are no match for sharks in the water at all. The great white did look like he was ready to eat him for lunch though.

for real. phelps top speed is around 6mph MAX. but a great white sharks top speed is 25mph. at 25 mph that would take 9 seconds to travel 100m. based off the time phelps avg was just under 6mph. which is damn impressive but no way in hell would the time be that close

Whiskey Locker looks like you did a lot of research there! Well too bad you did it for nothing! Phelps has a large fin to aid him in swimming and the CGI shark is programmed to only go its normal swimming speed. Phelps was going his top speed with a huge fin and the shark was chillin, swimming at a comfortable pace. Phelps still lost by 2 seconds.

Skinny Mcdoogin the shark can only go that fast for a short period of time, maybe 5-10 seconds. So they used its average cruising speed, not the fastest it can go. You wouldn't think that Usain Bolt would win the Olympic marathon, because he can only go really fast for a few seconds.

Cronikmstrb8tion - PSN it's a pain to do butterfly in a 100 meter, even short course. I swim varsity so I have the qualifications xd. He swam 100 meters straight, which isn't even the length of a Olympic pool, as an Olympic pool is 50 meters long. I can tell you from personally experience that a 100 in a Long distance pool hurts really bad, imagine going straight 100 meters

That would depend on several factors but phelps definately would have been fast enough to keep pace with the average shark for at least 100 meters. past 100 meters it's obviously the sharks game but for a short race Phelps could've had it covered.(if only barely)

it's rhiannon grace Well their ads prior to airing this inferred he was racing a real shark. Also is it not out of the realm of possibility that discovery has the funds to maybe... have 2 pools? Purchase a barrier like seaworld? I dont think everyone was thinking theyd swim holding hands.... Hell i think itd be better having phelps swim this alone, then go film a shark swimming and put those videos side by side. Atleast itd be real, not Micheal Phelps vs Micheal Bay Common sense says he cant swim with one plainly yes, but intelligence lets us think of ways to solve that problem and find a better more real solution.

Josh Bons That may be true but you can't keep a Great White in captivity. That's why there are no places like sea world who have Great Whites. Unless the crew who filmed this wanted to spend most of their time building a wall for the shark, it's really not possible without the shark dying from captivity

it's rhiannon grace don't think anyone actually thought he was going to race one for reals...people just complaining as a joke..as in they wanted to see him get eaten...and seriously that simulation was bs..sure the shark can't go 35mph all the time..but with just one power swim he would had left him behind..what they should had done is record a live greatwhite shark chase the bait for the same distance they were racing and time him. Aswell. (They done greatwhites chasing fake sea dogs before..not this fail..which everyone knew was not gonna be real. Just like the person who said was gonna get swallowed by a snake on discovery..

If one person hears about Michael Phelps swimming against a real shark and then finds out it isnt a real shark then they might be disappointed and not watch it. On the other hand if it is a real shark they would watch it, like it, share it more, and thus give the video more views. It was for sure a failed opportunity on discoveries part.

Sam Davis You should watch the full episode on the discovery channel because they explain to you that sharks cant go at their maximum speed for a long time. That sudden burst of speed is an example of how fast they can go when they are eating a seal. Sharks have to conserve energy and cant go 25 mph for long durations so they "cruise" at about 5 mph.

Jacob Bocaj it was a simulated great white. Though it goes about 30 miles per hour faster, they came so close because it was a shorter distance. Micheal finished 2 seconds behind the Great White meaning they traveled a very short distance. Its called math. Use your brain:)

100 meters is hardly a short distance. In short bursts, great white sharks can easily go over 25 miles per hour and they certainly don't need the entire length of a football field to build up that speed. A simple google search brings up countless articles and videos in which this is clearly proven. This was a stupid, inaccurate spectacle that Discovery channel funded in a weak attempt to gain back some shred of relevancy. Seeing as shark week was the only thing they have been able to build hype behind in the last 5 years, they saw this as an easy way to gain attention.

Did people really think he would be racing a live great white? I know a lot of people though "since Usain Bolt raced an actual cheetah real time, they could totally do this!" First off, you can't train a great white shark to swim in a straight line, you can't train a great white shark to swim at its fastest speed on command, and you can't train a great white shark to not eat Michael Phelps😂 it wouldn't have been safe for Micheal, it would've been inconsistent because the shark might've wanted to stop(considering It doesn't know it's in a race), and it wouldn't have been safe for the shark.
