In this video, I am discussing the triumphant return to the Criterion Collection for Michael Powell's dark masterwork PEEPING TOM (1960) now in 4K. The last time PEEPING TOM was in the Criterion Collection was on DVD back in 1999. I go into the history of Powell and Pressburger (aka The Archers) and the response to this film as well as its impact on Powell's career. I also talks about the supplements included here.
Details for this release: www.criterion.com/films/235-p...

I picked up the Studio Canal 4k edition of "Peeping Tom" that came out in January. This has some similar extras, plus a 37 minute discussion on the film and the work of Michael Powell, also a 28 minute overview of the film, a look at it's reception and an analysis by Sir Christopher Frayling. I think that Powell always had a dark edge to his films, but this was softened in his work with Pressburger. However, in "Peeping Tom" it was given full Rein. My favourite Powell And Pressburger film is "A Canterbury Tale".

I saw Peepingh tom in a theater back in 1round 1980. Was amazed by the beautiful color of the movie, despite its sleazy surroundings. I see you like Canterbury Tale. I just could not get into that film at all. It starts out interesting, but just is really wierd. But perhaps it was a precurssor to PEEPING TOM. Also could not get into TALES OF HOFFMAN. From Powell and Pressburger, my favorites are RED SHOES, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, and I KNOW WHERE I AM GOING.

I have been wanting to watch Peeping Tom since the studio Canal release but was waiting to see if it would get a US release and was happy to see Criterion did a 4K. Just got it last week and well worth the wait, a very intense thriller that looked amazing.

Great stuff Brian! The comparison with Psycho is really on my mind. Someone needs to do a PhD dissertation on it or something ;-). I remember that they run Powell and Pressburger movies on Saturday and Sunday afternoon (on the BBC they still do - not anymore on Belgian TV). So these were movies I watched as a kid with my grandfather. (Well I watched. My grandfather slept most of the time.) Peeping Tom is something very different. It is not matinee stuff. Psycho is more inline with Hitchcock's other works. I think of him essentially as a genre filmmaker. So while people expected a shocker (like he called Psycho) from Hitch, they didn't expect a shocker from Michael Powell. That being said they did play Hitchcock movies on ... a Sunday afternoon. (So my analysis is a bit shaky for the time being :-))

Yeah I think you’re right about expectations too - they clearly we’re not expecting this kind of movie from him AT ALL & it just blindsided those critics

There are 3 other P&P films that Criterion hasn't upgraded to blu-ray yet, The 49th Parallel, Small Back Room and A Canterbury Tale.

This will be a great discovery for many people, once again great review from you. Did you check out "I Know Where I'm Going" such an atmospheric film set in the Scottish island's. I stumbled across the house where Powell lived in Kensington London a few years ago near Kensington Palace. I was quite happy to see the blue plaque on the house telling who had lived there. What a diverse amount of films Powell and Pressburger made. All truly original will never see the likes again.

Great film! Still need to get this edition. I have to think this was an influence on 1965s The Collector from William Wyler.

Would seem like it must could easily have been an influence I agree - only thing I’m not sure of is his widely it was seen around the time of its initial release. The way they tell it on the supplements is that the film was almost instantly buried/lost. I’d like to think Wyler saw it somehow though

Moira Shearer from RED SHOES and TALESOF HOFFMAN is also in this film. Keep help thinking how much more Mr. Powell films might have been..Alas...

Hey Brian! Listening to the newest episode of Pure Cinema Pod and for whatever reason, your trailers aren’t playing. I checked on Apple Music and Spotify and after you announce the title it’s just minutes of silence before you start talking about it. Elric doesn’t seem to have that problem whenever he announced a title. Just thought you should know in case you wanted to go back and try to fix it or something.

Appreciate it - should be fixed now - my apologies!
