In 2002 I was very sick and I needed treatment in an hospital in the south of Germany. The doctor who treated me had the surnmae Praetorius. I asked him if he was an descendant of the famous composer Michael Praetorius. He said yes and was very pleased, that I knew about Michael Praetorius. We talked about the music of his ancestor and I forgot about the pain I was suffering before. Never forget about this beautiful encounter.

To continue to enjoy the music without hating myself for it, I have to keep telling myself that credit should go to the performing musicians, not to Phillip Pickett (look him up in Wikipedia if you don't know why he's persona non grata - he's a serial sexual abuser. Convicted and sentenced and imprisoned. He was assaulting members of the ensemble. They played well in spite of him, not because of him) but yes. This is definitely the best recording of Dances from Terpsichore, by far.

@Chompchompyerded 2 года назад
@@RenaissanceEarCandy I applaud your decision. He was a real creep. I don't want to go into private detail, but he caused a lot of trauma for a lot of us. There were far better people to play under. Even playing under John Elliot Gardener was preferable. Playing under Christopher Hogwood and Trevor Pinnock was a dream, and more a collaboration than a subjugation, just aa it was reported to be in the Baroque period. The same was true of David Monroe before he took his life. I wonder what might have been if he had have got treatment for his far to obvious depression. Many of us owe our careers to him, whereas many lost their careers, and even their lives to Pickett (three people that I know of committed suicide after he raped them, and the people who could have done something about it either did nothing, or reprimanded the victims for accusing such a popular person in the early music community). Mr. Pickett deserves every microsecond of his sentence, and should never be allowed back to his former prominence and glory. As he continues to be unrepentant, even boasting in prison about his exploits, he will reoffend, and I dread the day he is released. He is a violent serial rapist/sexual offender and by his own admission he is not going to change.

The music is beautiful, and the musicians do an excellent job, but Pickett is a criminal and deserves every second of the 11 years he was sentenced to. I wish the remainder of the musicians continued success in their careers, as they are all quite talented.

Yes, that's why I don't mention him in titles or descriptions. I did put his name in a title of a video which was actually superimposed over the video itself (it was the New London Consort's Dansereye), but I did that before I knew about Pickett's crimes. I of course now deeply regret doing so and it unfortunately cannot be removed.

@@blancakamp3138 politics always comes first, that is the most important awakening for every human being, knowledge about how structure works and how violence and war are its tools.

What did Praetorius start with? Were the pieces already harmonized or did he have just the melodies--I imagine the dancing master piping as his students practiced. Given the variety of orchestrations that have been recorded, I infer that Praetorius did little to specify instruments for the different parts.

Passameze shows lords who dance with their swords drawn out and their ladies are also dancing but at a distance. They are all on a military campaign, rich folks running this show from ancient times brought their entourage, their court musicians, while the big oak tree is littered with hanged deserters, enemies and peasants. This music is not only a counterpoint to the violence of the 16th century but it is its integral part - whether lords or rich merchants and craftsmen from the middle class, whether peasants during harvest or in the closing autumn to celebrate hard work - they are all dancing, they shall all feel, in one way or another, the brunt of violence, of war, of brutality, of dirtiness and diseases, of the struggle to survive, they shall be moved by irrational passion to live, and if they survive through their infancy they shall either accept the realisation of what existence really is, or sink into depression and illusions, until mercenary veterans kill those gentle souls unaccustomed to the ways of life. Mercenary sword, dagger, pike, arquebuse, musket, pistol, halberd, zweihander or under hooves of the specially bred and royal stables trained warhorses who do not shy even from the wall of pikes. Gentle sensitive souls or their harder town or village neighbors - they can all perish during looting, pillaging, raping and massacring. But amidst life's brutish brevity they would strive to live it to the fullest, by working, by dancing, by making love and fighting like in a frenzy. Along with their dethatched cynical lords who spend human lives in droves to defend or enlarge their realms. This passameze is just a prelude to the drama of life enfolding in each of these masterly performed miniatures. 16th century, with all of its contradictions of the heights of human spirit to the almost uninterrupted century and a half of more brutal carnage than in previous centuries, clearly showed still present opposing forces of advancement in all fields, including the means for war, the tools for killing. Bransle de Villages shows in a film montage sequence Dutch/Flemish peasants during sunny summer - collectively working in the fields, drinking, feasting, resting, smiling, dancing, making love, preparing for the winter... And all that can be erased in a moment. But during these four minutes of music celebrating life, work and love peasant's melancholy nostalgia kicks in while during a long war, impoverished in a big walled Flemish city, remembers how 10 years ago he had a family and a property, while now, with his complete left hand lost during the destruction of the village, he has nothing and has to beg to survive. This music and this performance are more than they might appear to be. Whispering of the lords, while musicians are playing, can determine who will survive and who will perish. And that doesn't mean only political intrigues aimed at rich and powerful individuals but in secrecy expressed plans determining the fate of many. Lords have no time or inclination to give to the music more than it "deserves." They are in the ruthless primordial tundra-like killing game. Then Machiavelli, whispering to the lord of Milan, suddenly turns towards you, presses his finger on his lips and points out to the musicians. "Enjoy your music."
