Michael Sekatchev was a semi-finalist in the 2024 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Michael presented his research, "Axion Quark Nuggets: A Recipe for a Glowing Milky Way?" He hopes to unravel the mystery of the faint glow pervading our Galaxy, hypothesizing that dark matter, typically non-emissive, might be the source.
Investigating Axion Quark Nuggets as potential dark matter candidates, Michael explores their interaction with regular matter, theorizing that it could produce light, possibly explaining the observed glow. Initial simulations hint at a match, offering potential insights into the elusive nature of dark matter and shedding light on a fundamental aspect of our Universe.
Michael Sekatchev is pursuing his Master of Science in Physics @UBC in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in @ubcscience under the supervision of Drs. Ariel Zhitnitsky and Ludovic Van Waerbeke.
#3MT is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.
