Pam does care for Michael but she also doesn't approve of a lot of the things he does as boss. She covers for him because she knows sometimes the devil you know is better than one you don't know. They could've replaced him with someone like charles from later seasons or ryan when he was promoted

I took a bread class in culinary school, and at the end of the day we'd take whatever leftover loaves, scones, etc. to the other kitchens and see if anyone wanted them (most of the time we could find takers, but not always, so we ended up with all the bread we wanted). The day we did pretzels, there was a line of chefs outside our kitchen with big paper bags, and they set upon us like piranhas on a dead cow once the door was opened. So yes, Pretzel Day is real, and universal.

And Michael didn't fire him, even when he had a full authority to do so.
