Everybody hates hearing their own voice, but Michael's performance here is classic and iconic.

Michael's voice is iconic. Awesome, just pure talent!! When you hear him sing you immediately think REM.

How can he ever have hated his voice? The pitch and clarity of it is amazing when in full performance.

His speaking voice and his singing voice are both gorgeous in different ways.

One of the most iconic voices in music history, instantly recognisable and capable of passing thru so much emotion even if you found the lyrics impenetrable. Oh and in my humble opinion, the greatest rock band ever, behind him too. Still miss these guys.

It sounded beautiful. I agree with Peter, I am interested let them out. We appreciate the outtakes and the rough drafts, it's all a part of the journey to the published piece and worth the review. Golly I miss seeing y'all live!

I like hearing or seeing rough cuts by artists and the insecurities they have; it proves that they're only human! Finished versions full of confidence and commitment seems so beyond what normal humans can do... but there was a path before they arrived at that.

Michael cuts a rough demo vocal better than 95%+ of every person on earth could ever do with the best studio equipment imaginable and doesn't like it LOL. Such a talent and perfectionist.

It's so worthwhile watching this whole episode on Netflix. Even in separate interviews the chemistry of the four band members is palpable. You can easily see how they made one another better. And they all offer great reflections on this classic recording.

The beauty of this song is unsurpassed, and hasn’t diminished over the passing of time. It was the right song at the right time, and is now a permanent marker in history.

It's so beautiful. Looking at the raw marble before the master takes the chisel and creates the masterpiece. It hurts to see him so embarrassed, but I understand as someone who hides behind that deep emotion to keep from creating. Bless Michael Stipe for his courage. I have so much love, compassion, admiration, and gratitude for him in my soul.

Listening to demos is like reading a rough draft of a great novel. They didn't release the demo for a reason...but once the great work is released and accepted, its nice to go back and hear or see or read how that thing got made and the revisions it went through to become what it became.

Michel's is the one voice that can, and that does, reduce me into tears at any given moment. Just like that. No other reason needed - just his voice. Just hits me somewhere in my soul. Such beauty that i feel it as pain...

My favorite singers have always been those that would never win, the Voice, I don’t want polished perfection, I want raw emotion, personality and honesty, and Michael’s voice is all of that. But we are all our own worst critics and I can definitely understand not liking your own voice or performance; it’s normal

This is such a beautiful clip. Many people hate hearing the sound of their own voice, but Michael Stipe's voice has always struck me (and obviously many others) as sincere and beautiful. This cut is hearing a great song in progress. :)

Michael has a great and totally unique voice, but when you hear it isolated you clearly see that REM is soooo much more than just "Michael's voice being supported by a band".

LOVE this band. They struck me as such artists and yet became a pop band that changed their sound a dozen times and yet it was still always REM

I admire this man so much.

I remember an REM engineer once saying that when he did playbacks with most bands, each of the members would want their parts pushed up in the mix, but with REM, each of the members wanted their parts to be moved lower in the mix.

That short Video of him , made me miss him. Miss R.E.M. and my own twenties when I was enjoying them. I feel, that I still do. This tiny Video really touches me.

Michael Stipes, I feel is as genuine as a person can be. I am not gay, but I saw him say in an interview once when asked about coming out, he said, "I don't think I ever knew what love was, until I realized the feelings I had for him". He was so sincere. I am totally opposite of his political views, but I admire his conviction and his commitment to what he believes in, and it makes me try to be more understanding of things I don't agree with. Why? Their music is so captivating and the lyrics, all by Stipes, have been a part of my artistry, and my basic soul since I heard them. If that's the case, I must have at least some common grounds with them....

I knew that song was a masterpiece when I first heard it! A song about unrequited love. Most of my life, I have been too shy to tell anyone that I loved them. It could have been my anthem!

The thing michael needs to realise about thise songs is its not JUST his voice. Its how someone couod be so sweet kind sensitive and empathetic enough in this world to write a song this beautiful. His voice is great. Still to this day. But things like his Colbert version of No Time For Love Like Now belong in the world. There will never be a more raw and complete version recorded than the first time he performed it on tv at the start of the pandemic. But for some reason i have to watch a derez version some dude uploaded when it was removed off The Late Shows video lineup

I love the demos. It shows the process that they took to get to the final version. As a fan I find the demos to be like live performances… slight variations of the original that make the song even better with each version you hear.

Yeah just like all the nirvana stuff that was put out, rem probly has way more and I'd love to hear all of it!

I listened to Green the other day for the first time in years. That's such an accomplished album. These guys were sorted from day-one.

Anybody who is looking for demos of popular songs is a big fan of the artist and normally just find the demo interesting and different because it doesn’t sound like the hit song they’ve heard so many times. Even if it isn’t as “good” die hard fans always love hearing different takes and versions of songs. The more content they can get the better, if every artist had video documentation of every album they made, the big fans would pay to watch it be made and love every minute of the footage. Artists should never be worried about demos sounding weird or off. The real fans love it all and they know it’s not the finished version.
