@vt4979 2 года назад
@@CrankyBarista Well to me the psychology here isn't nuanced at all, specifically regarding the line "I can leave right? I looked at all of them..." that you commented on. They even kicked it up a notch because this is comedy writing, and subtlety can be foregone altogether for bigger comedic effects, especially with characters like Roy. In a drama or real life, even some idiot like Roy would know how to lie better about his interest in Pam's arts, and not say something obviously stupid like this. It works in this context because it makes the dialogue much more funny, followed by the "Your art was the prettiest art of all the art". Albeit they are not as "grand" as the big jokes, but that's not the same thing as subtlety at all, it IS very obvious that this was irony (and help signify how sad and insulting it was to Pam). Also, being condescending doesn't help make you more credible so maybe learn to drop it?

I find interesting that Pam, although emotionally devastated, greets Michael with scorn, almost as she was thinking “ow, God, not him…” She was hoping for Prince Charming (Jim) or some friend, but all she got was her annoying boss. But it was him the only one who understood how much passion she had for her work as an artist, just like he had for his work as a paper salesman. Him saying “I’m proud of you” is something that he’d want someone to tell him, but never happened. I believe that this is the first moment in which Pam allows herself to see beyond Michael buffoonery and truly appreciate his qualities.

@@praketh1056honestly, I partly agree with OP tho. Like yeah, she’s wrapping up and feeling at her lowest. Probably 90% of her coworkers would’ve brought out a similar reaction. But also the fact that it was Michael of all people definitely warrants a tad bit of disappointment from her. She already expects him to be inappropriate and stupid, which is why his genuine response especially threw her off. His entire existence had been shattered by Ryan humiliating him and the paper industry in front of an entire classroom full of business students. Add to that the fact that Ryan's statements were 100 percent true - that the world was moving fast toward a paperless society - the incident did something that many would have thought impossible. Honestly, one of my favorite lines in this scene is when Michael says “I had to race across town.” It’s a line that’s easily overlooked, but it shows that Michael’s attendance at Pam’s art show was in no way convenient to him, yet he still made time to do it. That’s how much he cared about supporting her.

I wasn't a fan of the show. But I finally gave it a chance and this episode had me in tears. I'm an artist and I've been exactly there. Hearing people's true opinion. Not having a single word or anyone acknowledge my expression. No friends or family. Then someone even a person that doesn't relate to you comes and say wow. Just one wow can make your heart and soul feel such a joy. Love this episode.

Scenes like this are what made The Office a masterpiece. This has real human emotion and drama, without any need for violence or over the top situations. I mean every scene brings home something profound about the characters or the moment in their lives they are living through. Roy going to the art show just to say he went and claim being a good boyfriend, and Pam realizing he doesn't care about her passions. Oscar and his boyfriend are kinda dicks, but they aren't wrong and brutally inform Pam about a flaw in herself and her dream of being an artist. And then after Pam has taken an emotional beating (one I think she actually did need a little), Michael swoops in to restore her hope in herself, and not with some big inspiring speech or whatever, but by just really looking at her art and finding the small spots where Pam was brave enough to actually put her heart into her painting. And the cherry on the cake? Other than her own car, she only adds Michaels car, because he is such a big part of what makes DM so special to her. A+++++ scene

You nailed it but also worth mentioning is that the episode 'Beach Games' happens a few episodes later. The episodes draws to an end with Michael challenging his possible successors to walk across hot coals and Pam ,who was not being considered for the manager position, is the only one who does it. It was Oscar and GIl's harsh words that helped give her the courage to do this and then speak her mind to everyone in the office.

This was the first episode I got emotional about. Out of all the people who came or was invited michael genuinely wanted to be there to support her. You can tell he likes to get involved with his workers like they are family to him. Half the time at occasions or events he tries to make people have a good time and this was that perfect moment. Love how he appreciates his workplace and how proud he is. You just can’t be mad at the guy for all the mistakes he’s made and continues to make when he does stuff like this ❤️ PS: don’t hate me but I started to dislike Jim when he started dating karen. Like homeboy couldn’t show up to pams show because he’s trying to prove what point now? 🤔

He didn't want to go, because he overheard Pam and Roy saying they love each other. There was nothing to prove. He just didn't want to dredge up anything. It was self-preservation. After he had put himself on the line for her twice and been turned down, only to find out through secondhand sources that she had called off her wedding without telling him, only to realise he still had feelings for her when he returned to Scranton... only to see her walk out of Phyllis' wedding with Roy again out of nothing but sheer convenience, I don't blame Jim for the way he reacted. I really don't understand why fans come down hard on Jim, as if his behaviour is not at least understandable.

It's one thing to say you're proud but to buy the work in question, frame it, and then eagerly hang it up for all to see proves he truly was proud of her work. It wasn't the support Pam wanted, but it was the support she needed.

I think this scene serves as a great example and reminder that quality acting can be shown without fancy shots or edits. Sure there's not anything crazy happening, like something in Gladiator, but their expressions and interactions are so authentic. Every time Pam responds, it's like I'm watching somebody's conversation in real life. Ironic, because it's not meant to be a serious show.

This scene works on so many levels. Michael has just had his whole reason for being in business questioned at Ryan's school, so him saying “that is our building, where we sell paper” is a chance for him to reaffirm himself. It's unexpectedly moving, because we always expect Jim to be the one to be Pam's knight in shining armor riding to her emotional rescue. Who would have expected Michael, who usually just thinks of himself, being the one to be there for her when she needs someone? And then, Michael is always trying to inspire his workers with these big bombastic speeches. Here, he finally succeeds in inspiring someone, just by saying the simple words “I am really proud of you.” Moves me every time.

Honestly this is truly great writing right here. It’s not like Michael isn’t his usual oblivious self. But there’s no doubt throughout the series that he cares deeply for his staff (regardless of his stupid actions), and he made it a point to support Pam. Regardless of if her art was actually good or not doesn’t even matter to him, because he immediately saw the meaning behind what his employee did and admired that genuinely. That’s what a good boss does. And yes, that’s just a Chunky in my pocket 👍

It is so incredibly difficult and brave to bare your soul and display your artwork this way. I’ve done it and it’s incredibly hard to watch people walk by because they don’t get your art. One night I had a bad night out with my art and felt so dejected. I packed up and didn’t unpack my art again for like a week and I when I did there was a neatly folded hundred dollar bill in between my craftworks. Support your local artists, any way you can. This is what I love about Michael Scott. He’s an idiot. He always puts his foot in it. He consistently does offensive or detrimental things. He’s obsessed with gaining validation. But it all comes from a place of genuinely meaning well. He likes people and he wants them to like him. And despite finding him insufferable, the other characters know all of this too, so when he has moments like this, they know he’s being earnest and genuine and appreciate him for it as Pam does here. It’s great when we get genuinely great character writing in otherwise ridiculous shows.

This scene hits home for me so hard. My first semester in art school, we got to display our final projects in an art gallery for the First Friday art walk. My classmates art pieces were more contemporary, abstract art while mine was based on dynamic comic book superheroes. The type of people that were at the art walk were mostly art snobs so my project was largely ignored as comic book style art was still seen as childish. However one of my classmate's parents took an interest in my art and asked me a lot of questions about it. The joy Pam feels when Michael was impressed by her heart was so realistic as all it takes is one person to compliment your skill to feel appreciated.
