As a native French speaker, it's so funny to see how the other countries tries to pronounce Michelin, especially in the UK which sounds more like “Mitchelin”, the other ones (even US English, which is pretty rare) sounds pretty close to the original French pronounciation.
The Michelin Man came about when Andre Michelin looked at a stack of tires and remarked that if they put arms and legs on it you would have a man. The name Bibendum came from the Latin tag “Nunc est Bibendum” (Let us drink) on an early poster showing the character “drinking” nails, etc. to show how tough Michelin tires were.
