Tonya Harding is clearly no match for the most impressive and the most artistically beautiful Michelle Kwan. Michelle Kwan was absolutely right to follow her heart to where it takes her, her love for figure skating.
Wow, having just watched her 1992 programs, it's amazing the difference that a year made. She is so much more confident here, not just in the way she asserts herself on the ice, but in the way she leans into her edges. So glad I'm choosing to rewatch all her programs!
I want to go back in time and fix this music - the "in between" Saigon/transition stuff from 1:10 - 2:59 just doesn't add anything but dead space til at 3:00 when Vangelis' "Hymne" comes in and saves it.
I believe most girls in the national team should be 12 seniors like in Russia so they can be strong enough to learn the quads and triple axels. If they are juniors it is ok.
I agree that Yuna Kim is a bit actressy, which is not a criticism. It might just be her personality or that is the best way she can convey her emotions. Michelle, on the other hand, is just Michelle. As one American commentator says, every time Michelle steps on the ice, she takes you along on a journey of her emotions. You never feel that with "Queen" Yuna.
@alphabetacanton But how is it not acting? and I don't mean acting in a negative way. In figure skating, I don't think it means "pretending" to be someone. I think it means expressing a certain character to a song, but interpreting the song in the skater's unique perspective. For yuna, she has chosen songs like the James Bond Medley, Giselle, and the Lark Ascending. Its quite apparent that she interprets the music to match these characters but she still conveys her style in a unique way.
@ixsharon I never think of figure skating as acting. I respect your opionion, but mine is a bit different. Though a skater dresses and skates to certain themes, I never take the characters he/she assumes seriously. What I look for are his/her competence, fluency, and courage on ice. What I value most is the way the skater moves and inspires me about what great atheletes and artists really are. Sentimentality and overt emotions actually is quite embarrassing in skating. Just my penny's worth.
well, have absolutely nothing to compare Tonya with Michelle, but I previously made my point to make a comparison of Tonya with gutless Getrealandsee. So why did I bring up a comparison to Getrealandsee to her icon, Tonya Harding? Because they behaved the same puny way. Getrealandsee complained and whined like Tonya when she didn't get her way. Do you see my point here?
And Yu Na can most definitely do a triple loop. She landed it many times. She took it out since under COP it isnt really important if you are missing a triple, and it is her most inconsistent one. Guess who also took out the triple loop in her only ever competition under COP as well. hmmmm.
I dunno, Harding in 1993 was pretty awful. No jumps, empty-ish programs that she looked to be half-assing anyway, totally devoid of all the qualities that made her such a compelling skater (speed, power, etc).
getrealandsee Yes, Tonya is an overrated jumping bean as you will ever see coming from Tonya Harding. She deserved to take boxing as a way of anger management and as if she was a smoking toxicity to the world of figure skating indeed. You deserve to have your overrated Tonya Harding as your pride and joy while Michelle Kwan is the most respected, beautiful and classiest figure skater. As for you, you deserve to have a punching bag of your own.
why should I bill you when you sound rather bossy and snotty? Hmm. I don't go around bickering about Michelle Kwan when you have been highly self centered and arrogant yourself. WHY waste your time trying to prove yourself obnoxious and thinking that you know Michelle Kwan by examining her through a microscope. Girl you need to get fully evaluated. How would Sasha view you especially when Sasha have nothing to say about her competitors?
@Karosanyo Yes Yu Na's artistry sucks which is why the judges regularly give her the highest PCS of all the current skaters even when she doesnt skate her best, LOL! And Yu Na does plenty of things better than Michelle too, Michelle has none of Yu Na's ability to do triple-triple combinations of all kind, Yu Na's jumps are much bigger and higher quality, Yu Na does more complex spins, and Yu Na is faster and has better ice coverage. Not to mention Yu Na gave the best Olympic performance ever.
Michelle has better ice coverage than Yuna. Michelle's footwork was better than Yuna. Change of the edge spiral is Michelle's signature move. Michelle's Charlotte spiral was amazing. (∩▽∩)And Yuna's triple triple combo was better. (∩▽∩)And Yuna inspired by Michelle's artistry.
That's an unnecessary observation. Do you go to videos of other legendary skaters to make those comments? It's because of what the legends have established and how they raised the standard that skating is what it is today.
vietgrlterifa1 So true. Michelle raised the bar for women's figure skating and the Sport is what it is today thanks to skaters like Michelle and several others. They are legends.
Well, this was 25 years ago, so you could say make that kind of comparison about any program at any level. Would the sixth place senior lady in 1968 have qualified to the 1993 novice event?
