Erlinda Baybayan The 6.0 system was inherently subjective and totally absurd. The "new" system is much better, but in an "aesthetic" sport there's no real way to make things objective... The GoEs, the Skating Skills, the Interpretation... What really bugs me is the Choreography, since that's literally just down to whether or not you have the funds/clout to nab one of the major choreographers. Though, looking at the detailed results for the 2016 Worlds, I'm not quite sure how that egg-laying, face-palming Firebird Lori Nichol constructed for Gracie Gold ended up many points ahead of, say, the gorgeous Gone With the Wind program David Wilson made for Alaine Chartrand... Gracie's "CH" marks are several points higher than Alaine's, which I just don't get... That's why figure skating is, in many ways, not a "sport," which is unfortunate for the athletes who dedicate their lives to this pursuit and train day-in/day-out for 20 years...

Well she followed this great skate with more than a decade of world domination, so all in all not a bad career.

Lipinski had a triple loop-triple loop which is the only reason she was winning. Without that she is lucky to medal. Michelle did not have something like that to force judges to put her over older skaters who did the same jumps and were more mature. Plus like Dustin said the field was godawful in 97-98 which helped Tara.

@@rolandgreen7484 Tara didn't make a correct 3+3 , and she paid for it by got hurt. Tara had a kid's body and weight, easier to jump higher. Michelle's artistry and technique were better, if Tara hadn't a 3+3, Michelle would win.

But that doesn’t make any sense. She skated a perfect program. Didn’t mess up anything. Never fell on any of her jumps. Why were her presentation marks so low? I don’t think that was really fair.

It is hard to say. Today they might have just used the PCS to give Chen the win. It would also depend who has higher levels of spins and non jump elements. Bobek might have had a shot even with the 2 falls due to her short program lead, the triple lutz-triple toe, and probably higher levels on her non jump elements and higher PCS than Kwan. Bonaly would have been out of the top 5 under the new system here.

This was an electrifying performance, the best of the competition and it really did not sit well with many that she came fourth. She should have been higher in the short too. The lower marks were supposedly to reflect her artistic immaturity at this point (she was 14), which is a valid point, she was, but she definitely should have medalled in Birmingham.

Markus McManus In the 6.0 system it's the placement, so in order to place say someone above a skater who had a 5.8 technical and 5.8 artistic, you have to give 5.8 and 5.9 to place the skater above the first skater in placement. The artistic marks break a tie.

Well.... I don't agree that Lu Chen's performance was better than Kwan's at the 96 World championship. 😅

But I agree not only Michelle but also Lu Chen deserved to win the 96 World championship. 😊

Michelle's performance was dramatic, epic and passion. Lu Chen's performance was elegant, graceful and beautiful. ❤ They were totally different, and both great.

Just like what you said, Tara was overrated and Michelle was robbed at the 1998 Olympics.

She looked too childish? She was 14! Bobek was a lovely skater but falls count against you in competition and Michelle ("immature" as she was, lol) didn't fall. Why can't people just congratulate a good performance or find one that appeals to you, instead of running others down? Geez, what is wrong with you?
