Yeoh had already achieved the prestigious title of "Miss Moomba, 1984" before winning the Academy Award for Best Actress. She first won the Miss Malaysia World competition in 1983 and went on to participate in the Miss Moomba pageant in Melbourne later that same year. Footage from the Australian Television Archive shows the 20-year-old Yeoh waving to fans from a float during the Moomba parade.
