Michigan 41, Florida 35. Michigan overcame four turnovers and came from behind in the fourth quarter to win the 2008 Capital One Bowl. Mike Hart went 32-129-2 but fumbled twice after going over one thousand carries without fumbling. Chad Henne went 23-39-373-3-2, with a 21-yarder to Mario Manningham (7-53) and 18- and 1-yard passes to Adrian Arrington (9-153). After gaining the lead late in the fourth quarter, Michigan held Florida to two straight four-and-outs to seal the win.

Its sad that all Michigan players/fans heard about that year was the app state loss, but people forget we beat ND 38-0 that year and beat them Florida Gators in the Capital One Bowl 41-35! And wasnt Teblow heisman that year? Yup

This was a great game but the thing I remember the most is the WR play of Michigan. It's like the DB's did they're best but it wasn't good enough. Chad Henne though is what made the offense go. Didn't get rattled under pressure and just led his team to victory. Awesome way to send Lloyd Carr out a winner over a great Florida team.

I just love the geograpical disadvatage Big 10 teams have against these teams. Love it. The boo's as Michigan playeres run through the tunnel. Illinois played USC in Pasadena, Michigan played Florida in Orlando, Ohio State played LSU in New Oreleans, and Penn State played Texas A&M in San Antonio. It's never fair for the Big 10. :D I love it though.

The first series of downs by both teams normally gives me a good ideal of how things are going to go in most games. The fact Mich started at their own 7yrd line and drove the length of the field to score spoke volumes. Mike Harts fumbles kept my stomach in knots, but felt good about Mich play. Glad we won!

We can't possibly be talking about the same two plays. I'm talking about 7:51 of the 2d quarter, where Tebow hits Harvin for an apparent touchdown which was called back for illegal procedure (not enough men on the line of scrimmage). After the penalty, at 7:45, Tebow throws to Harvin in the end zone again, but he does not come remotely close to hanging on to the ball. What two plays are you talking about?

JoePa's actually been slowly transitioning into the spread, I noticed that with the Alamo Bowl with a temporary dual QB system. It helped overcome a 14 point defecit and pile on 24 nearly unanswered points. I can't wait to see how Penn State and other Big 10 teams do in 2008.
@parkinggod
@parkinggod 16 лет назад
And that changes the score of this game exactly how?
@MVillani1985
@MVillani1985 16 лет назад
One of the most important factors is how well these players adapt to Rich Rod's training for this type of offense. If I'm not mistaken, many of these are Lloyd Carr's recruits, and Lloyd Carr generally ran a more smashmouth, socalled "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense. If these players are adaptable to the change and are just as effective at spread option, in 2009, Michigan could be nearly unstoppable. But I think most of 2008 will be adjustment for the offense like 2007 was for the defense.

I'm an SC fan, but I was actually kinda happy for the Michigan Wolverines that day. They beat a very tough Florida Gators team, not to mention that they also had a Heisman Trophy winner as well. Still, it was nice to see them come off with a victory, not only for Chad Henne (who had a tough 4 years and was abused by big teams like USC in a couple of Rose Bowls), but mainly for Les Miles, retiring as a head coach, and was hoisted on the shoulders of his team.

Henne more than DOUBLED the passing yardage of the Gators precious Heisman Trophy-winning Tim Tebow, 373 yards in the air! Over 500 yards total offense! I factored in two touchdowns Mike Hart gave away, and one Florida should have had, and we still come out 6-12 point favorites! We beat this 'fabled SEC' team like a rented mule! Go BLUE!!!

The thing I noticed about this game was Michangans' WRs(& I know that was a sumwat young fl team).They were not fast,however,they used their height as an advantage(didn't jump for their catches.).So corners started respecting the pass.Which resulted in Hart getting enormous rushing games.

Joe Haden (freshman) is a good corner he stoped 3 touchdown passes, they will all improve with experience. I agree we haven't had a decent running back in a while which left Tebow having to carry the load on passing and running the ball. But we have Emmanuel Moody a transfer from USC now. He had to sit out this season but he's good to go now, and there is still a chance we get Darrell Scott the #1 HS RB, UF will be back. Good luck on getting Pryor, I would hate to see him at OSU.
@Poole1Dan
@Poole1Dan 16 лет назад
1. We didn't lose multiple 4 year starters on the offensive line. Long was the only 4 eyar starter on Michigans offensive line 2. We aren't starting a bunch of freshmen. LT Mark ortmann, LG Tim McAvoy, and RG/C David Moosman are all juniors, and RT Stephen Schilling (a redshirt sophomore) is a returning starter. Orttman and McAvoy saw starters minutes in 2007, making them close to returning starters for 2008. the only "freshmen" starting on the o-line is redshirt center David Molk

But Tim Tebow on the other hand, he was contained very well. he only had a 50% completion percentage and 150 yards, and he was held to 3.5 yards per carry The heismen jinx strikes yet again

This game wasn't remotely as close as the score would indicate. Hart literally fumbled twice, (something he had only done 1 other time all year), right at the fuckin goal line! This was the sort of offence Michigan should have been running that year and, imo, every damn year. Back then we had great o-lines, really good pass-blocking RB's, (especially Hart that year), QB's with great arms and usually pretty accurate, and absolutely stacked receiving corps - and yet we maintained an extremely conservative pro-style offense, (to be fair, not nearly as terrible in this regard as Jim Harbaugh's offensive scheme was prior to Gatis showing up), that focused too much on run-plays, specifically power run-plays right up the middle and off tackle. Which in a way, this demonstrates just how good Michigan's QB's and receiving corps were back during the Carr era, seeing as how despite not throwing the ball nearly as often many/most other high-powered offensive schemes - and yet they still put up amazing numbers. Im not saying they should have given up on running, it's just that rather than being 60/65 to 40/35 runs to pass ratio, it should have been 60 to 40 pass to run. Similar to what they did in this game, or like Stoops' offensive schemes at Oklahoma where despite being a very pass-centric offense, it still produced a Heisman RB in Adrian Peterson. Michigan torched these guys in this game and would have done this to damned near everyone back then. I mean - could you imagine Navarre throwing this much back in his Sr. year when he had Braylon Edwards, Jason Avant, Steven Breaston, and Tim Massaquoi to throw to? God damn that would been awesome! And it also would have removed the massive load that Perry had to carry for, he still would have put up nearly as many rushing yards and maybe even stayed being a a Heisman finalist like he was that year, just without the beating he took, (and it was that beating that eventually lead to him being so prone to injury in the NFL). If wasn't for those two forementioned fumbles by Hart at the goal line along with 2 picks that Henne threw, we dominated the Gators on both sides of the ball - possibly even more so on the defensive. Shawn Crable is hands down the greatest Michigan defensive player to not be a great NFL player. He was possibly the best all around LB in Michigan history, and is without question the best Outside LB. The only LB's that were James Hall, Devin Bush, Ian Gold, Dhani Jones, Victor Hobson, Larry Foot, Sam Sword, David Harris, and Pierre Woods were all phenomenal LB's, but none were quite as dynamic. And unquestionably none of them were as freakishly athletic either, (Woods may be the only one to match Crable on that front). Crable was recruited to play DE, but because of his speed they moved him to OLB - where he dominated for three straight years. Crable was one of the best run-stoppers in the country while also being a decent TE cover-man at LB too, but more importantly he was just a monster pass-rushing LB. He was 6'5", strong, and had blazing speed and agility, especially when taking into account how fuckin big the dude was. He was Tebow's spy, and did a amazing job containing him, and because of him and great team defense we managed to hold Tebow to a mere 57 rush yards off of 16 attempts while also keeping him to less than 160 yards passing! I truly wish that after Harbaugh gets dumped, that we bring in a coach willing to implement the sort of offense that is simply the best offense for college ball nowadays. Maybe not quite as pass-heavy as Leach's offense, (though I'd be all for bringing him in and implementing that sort of offense), but something more along the lines of Stoops's Oklahoma's offense. Sadly this game, was really the closest we've ever gotten to that. Anyways, sorry for rambling - GO BLUE!

It was a 17-3 lead for awhile, but only for about a quarter. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter thanks to a missed PSU FG, in the second quarter Michigan scored 10, while PSU scored 3. In the third quarter, Michigan scored a TD, but was unable to score anymore. Penn State's TD came late, but not exactly "very, very late". There was about 3 minutes left in the game. 3 minutes is a LOT of time in a football game, remember the 2005 Michigan-PSU game for example.

I'll admit that Illinois was overwhelmed in that bowl game, but at least they weren't completely disgraced. Even though they were blown out, they did good for a team that two years ago was down 56-3 at halftime against a national championship contender and finished with only 4 combined wins in 2005 and 2006. SoonermagicJ2009: it was Carson Palmer who won the Heismen in 2002, and he had a great Orange Bowl performance against Iowa. Then Matt Leinert won it in 2004, and he ripped apart Oklahoma in the 55-19 NC win. Ron Dayne won it in 1999, and he ran all over Stanford in a 21-16 Rose Bowl win. Charles Woodson won it in 1997, and he only gave Ryan Leaf half a field to work with and made a crucial goaline int. The Heismen jinx is a little overblown, IMO. (:

Dude, unless Justin Feagin is the starter, we won't be running the spread option offense in 2008. Steven Threet will likely be the starter, and we will run the exact same offense that we ran against Florida in the Capital One Bowl. When we ran that offense, we put up 41 points and 534 total yards.....against the defending national champs! I'm excited for 2008.

I'm a Buckeye fan, but this was a great Michigan team beating a really good Florida team. I think Michigan will be very good going forward and we will have some pretty good match ups. Maybe a big ten team will finally beat an sec team for a national champ!?!

Might as well change the name to Adrian Arrington Highlights from the 2008 Capital One Bowl. And for all of you Chad Henne haters just watch some of the throws he makes in this game. Chad Henne is an underrated qb who gets way to muckh shit from other fans.

I'm a buckeye fan, but I have to admit...it's great seeing UM get the Gators. Lloyd Carr was a better coach than he was treated. I hope RichRod leaves this season and so UM can bring someone who knows Big Ten football and brings this greatest rivalry in American Sports back to life!! Go Bucks!

great game i was so surprised to but i think rich rodriguez taught them to play spread during practice im pretty sure because lloyd nvr plays like that. Justin Feagins is going to be a beast and already in the 2009 rcting class we have a 5 star prospect, DL or DE he is a monster

Also, look at 5:20. There are 5 FLA guys and 2 UM receivers. The result? TD UM.

@RyML1fe Thank you. Finally an OSU fan shows the respect both schools deserve. I hate people who just want to use it as an excuse to talk shit, instead of enjoying the awesome tradition and competition. No other match-up creates more exciting games than a #1/#2 Michigan OSU game.

agreed, and based on the way Michigan ran the spread against Florida, we will thrive right off the getgo in RR's spread offense

Gators have rebuilding years just like everyone else...so does Michigan this year. But Gators had a HEISMAN trophy winner (who was on his back a good deal of the game) and lost in their own hometown, with most of their fanbase present. What a sweet Michigan victory over the 'superior' SEC!!! I love watching Urban Meyer's sphincter puckerin' up in the last two minutes as he realizes his bowl game is in the toilet. Go, BLUE!!!

Yeah, and all of the players on the 2006 Florida Gators national title team were Ron Zook's players. Everybody said that Urban Meyer wouldn't be able to run his spread offense with Zook's players. How did that turn out? The bottom line is: Michigan has tons of talent on offense, just like Florida did, and talented players can be molded to fit any offensive system.

Actually was a pretty good game, except for the loss. Michigan came from behind--I like that. McGuffie for a TD..he got the taste. Threet should be the QB, no doubt. Michigan Man. But for one or two pass receptions, Michigan was right wif 'em! A close game..less than a field goal. Mike Shaw looks like a comer. You can feel the desire he's got, starting even ahead of Minor. Sure would like to see a fullback leading a RB into the red zone, as a complement to the spread. Go, BLUE!!

Im a Buckeye too but I was so glad when florida got owned, I hope Ichigan does get better, I could never tell if RichRod was a good coach because all I saw was speedy1 and speedy2 in WV offense. (Pat White and Noel Divine)
