Damn, that's inspiring. I study solar-thermal derived fuels, that way we don't have to make electric cars. Things like this keep me motivated. You know, it's only cold and dark at night because there's a planet in the way. In space, there's all the sunlight you could ever need.

It's amazing that we're alive today, asking these questions, and able to answer some of them, after 3.5 billion years of evolution and multiple extinction events that could have eradicated all life on Earth. But if thinking on such scales of time, it's also worrying that we only have 1-4 billion years left on Earth, before we're forced to find another habitable planet. We'd better get cracking with the development of warp drives :)

Modern Science is pushing our brains beyond its boundaries. Building its discoveries brick by brick, the spirit of science shows us the direction to develop our skills, intuitive power along with our intellect. The future looks like a whole lot of Universe is for us to explore, experience and enjoy.

Keep in mind, if it's possible to travel to other universes, than the Fermi Paradox becomes infinitely more problematic.

2:40, Ok, this is probably going to seem quite ignorant ... on the surface. But bear with me, Please! Derek from Veritasium has a really interesting video in which he demonstrates how the Equivalence Principle can be used to show that all red- and blueshifting of light across the universe is the same as a "plain old" Doppler effect, which is the same as the other type of wavelength stretching/compressing. (The details are, obviously, eluding me at the present time.) His point was that, mathematically, all three causes of shifting wavelengths result in the exact same effect. SO, How could we possibly KNOW that the universe is expanding -- that spacetime ITSELF is "growing"? In other words: How do we know, when we see all but the closest, gravitationally bound galaxies receding from us, that the source of their respective motions isn't simply the result of the energy from the Big Bang still "projecting" those galaxies THROUGH a spacetime that was already present? I just don't see how we could definitively say that the universe is expanding, when we can't seem to differentiate between the different types of Doppler shifting. 'Lil help, Please?

I appreciate Kaku’s use of a hierarchy of civilizations. It is based on a few unspoken assumptions, though. 1. Energy and its use and consumption is the measure of a civilization’s worth. 2. “Nature,” as in independent agency resulting in a living environment, is not addressed except as “natural resources,” for consumption by the civilization. 3. The worth of a civilization is best measured by the measures that have been used for 6,000 years, namely wealth, status, and power. I propose an alternative hierarchy. Level 0: a civilization that treats its natural environment as consumable natural resources. Its model is economic, and it assumes that growth is unlimited and that the value of its society is measured in terms of its wealth, which is equally unlimited. The only ethical responsibility such a civilization has is to its own members, and that remains unequally distributed. Level 1: a civilization which has managed to live in symbiosis with its environment, neither depleting nor enhancing it. Its model is sustainability, growth is moderated by the health of the environment; the value of its society is measured in terms of the well-being of all its members. Based on the doomsday argument it is unlikely (under 5%) we will ever survive next 10-15k years depending on population dynamics. Most likely the last human will be born around 700 years from now.

I like to compare this with the Stargate series. We are the offspring of a very old race. The same thought can be found back in the game: No Man's Sky, that introduces the traveller as an old race that built a supercomputer able to create galaxies in which the traveler can live on. As usual science and science fiction are two sides of one medal. It could turn out that making universes isn't even all that difficult. Even Kaku's Type 1 or 2 beings could do it. God like entities may not be necessary.

I'm considering humanity's astounding progress where today college students inability to distinguish between Male and Female, Life from Non life, etc...I question humanity's future if any.

When I first heard humans will go extinct someday, I was very sceptical and somewhat horrified. However, I think it’s more likely we will evolve into something else, even if human civilization is destroyed by nuclear war or human-caused environmental disasters. Whether or not humans will be able to create another civilization after that is an open question, but current knowledge and technologies could be lost.

It wouldn't be "playing" God. Thats the arrogance of humanity seeping through. We would still be a creation part of the fabric playing by the existing rules as, we understand n discover them. Unless we create the rules for math n science (which we dont) we couldn't make such a small minded arrogant claim.

Could the universe and galaxies have been created to make it difficult and impractical for technology to reach beyond star system, for intelligence to investigate beyond galaxy, and for consciousness to look beyond universe? May be part of reason for Fermi paradox, that any civilization would find development beyond star system not worthwhile? In such a case the universe and galaxy may have a great filter built in?

There is a flaw however, Michio presumes much about consciousness. He talks as if it's a by-product of intelligence, which is highly debatable. There just isn't enough evidence on consciousness itself to make such a claim, for all we know consciousness could be fundamental.

Plans to mine asteroids, likely not profitable...an asteroid with 90 million tons of platinum is worth 5.4 trillion dollars, with the most powerful ship ever planned ot be made, it would take 900,000 ships to transport the platinum. The ship can transport 100 tons...so travel is to slow and mining resources to help with space travel is likely not profitable, so less likely to happen...

Humans are so ego centric. Firstly they developed all sorts of religious beliefs to allay their fears of death and oblivion. In recent history science has all but debunked these beliefs. Now we seem to be trying to use science for the same purpose. All this talk of a universe fine tuned for life and consciousness. I don’t understand the amazement. The universe just is, and if it wasn’t nobody would be asking the questions. We humans are just not that special, sure we can build stuff but so what. Eventually this will all count for shit. Possibly sooner rather than later. Then how smart will we feel. Anybody that has had a strong attachment to a non human animal , ie a pet and in my opinion dogs are the best, knows this. Animal intelligence and consciousness is often dismissed as “just” instinct. In some aspects it is superior to human consciousness. Individually and as a species our days are numbered. Type 4 can not exist now, but we can evolve to one in the future. Everything, and everything is possible, except the same type 4, a God. That, can not be possible, but we can evolve to it. These physicists, should stick within there subject and do not go to another.

Interesting so can what we know as God be really a Type 4 that can create universes from nothing?

He does not talk about a reset theory of civalization. One idea is Noa's Arc story in the bible is a true story. An old advanced civalisation could see a comet about to crash into the arctic about 12,000 years ago. Then this adanced civilisation would tell a man and his family (Noa ) to build a boat because they knew of the comeing sea level rise or comeing floud.

But what about our evolution? On Earth? In this universe? If we originated from a type 3 civilisation from another universe why would life begin all over again?

Michio references Star Trek quite a bit in his explanations.. he doesn't utter a single word about that nonsensical, mind numbing Star Wars.

There have been times in my life where I have dreamed of an escape hatch from this planet I can totally relate. I really enjoyed this video it kept me captivated and entertain from the beginning to the end.

People in charge of space companies and governments are fine with things like harmful damage to radiation and gravity...which will cause humans to become a different species if they live in space or on a planet or moon long enough...So even if they can make the colonies technologically feasible on Mars and the Moon, then humans wont be there that long. A different species will be made...that will happen to any colony in any star system, even if things like Warp drive and stargates can be made, and colonies can be made in different galaxies, if the colonie s are on moons or planets with much less or much more gravity and radiation than Earth, then a different species will be made...

Interesting idea but weird reasoning. Conscious observer will always see laws of physics that are required for them to exist - no matter how finely-tuned they seem. I don't see why we would need to apply this bubble reproduction idea in the first place (assuming it's even possible).

With our current civilization, with our current economic system, space travel has gotten more expensive just in my life time. What exactly is space travel going to cost in the next one hundred, one thousand, one million, and according to this video, 3 billion years from now?
