People may have heard the name Bugsy Siegal but he has nothing on Mickey Cohen, the American gangster, boxer and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. This guy was not only ruthless but also nearly impossible to kill.

Your commentary is so great and entertaining. Not to be picky, but you referenced Tommy DeSimone from the Goodfellas story and said he ended up in a cornfield... well that was actually Spilotro from Chicago that ended up in the cornfield just like the Casino movie depicted. DeSimone portrayed by Pesci in Goodfellas, actually went missing and has never been found. Nobody has ever claimed that he ended up in a cornfield until this video. 😅

Years ago a friend and I took a summer and visited the graves of many of the Hollywood greats. A week was spent on the Stooges, all of them, Moe being the last at Hillside. While paying our respects my eye caught an odd anomaly to my left. A deep dark stain on one crypt and one crypt only? I went to check it out and it was Mickey Cohen's (no Mark not Rourke) and no I didn't pay him any respects, it was creepy. Eric, I too have my plasma scars and like you I ended up in the Navy. Great show guys. I love that period in LA. I grew up in Chicago and am quite familiar with "wide open" towns. The corruption is awful of course, but what fun! Thanks.

Great episode! Mark has nudged his way onto my personal shortlist of interesting and fascinating personalities I would love to spend an evening (or long distance drive) with, just to hear them expound on anything and everything, which puts him in the good company of the likes of John Waters, Camille Paglia and Penn Jillette. Mark feels like that comfortable old friend who you always loved getting high with, because you knew some great, hilarious and mind-blowing detailed stories would come spilling out, and they had a manner of relating their tales or histories that few others possessed. Either that, or I'm just stoned every time I watch these guys. Either way.

Stompanato killing - a good friend produced the TCM doc. "Lana Turner: A Daughter's Memoir". Cheryl Crane tells the "official" story. Hearing her mother being attacked, she grabs knife in kitchen, races upstairs to bedroom. The door opens and Stompanato "runs into the knife". My friend interviewed lots of people around Lana -- including Lana's PR guy. Off the record, they said Lana did it. The police photos show Stompanato in middle of room...far from the door. There is no blood on the carpet (appears to be white of light color in b/w photos). If he'd been stabbed in the stomach (stomach wounds produce lots of blood) at door, there would have been blood trail from door to middle of room.

In her memoir, "Detour," published in the 1980's, Cheryl Crane states that she stabbed Johnny Stompanato because she heard him threatening her mother. She also states that she had been previously raped by Lex Barker, her mother's husband, when Cheryl was 10-13 years old. She told Lana about it and Lana believed her. In the photo here, Lana's attorney Jerry Giesler is shown but not identified. Giesler is the first person Lana called, after Stompanato's death, before the police were called. We will never know if Cheryl really did it or not. However, if Lana did it, and she loved him so much, why did she kill him while he slept? Why would Lana have killed him at all?

All these videos are fantastic, guys, but this one is right up my alley. If you're a fan of classic crime fiction, you know Hammett and Chandler, and how corrupt the times were, from Prohibition days on. Learning about the Jewish gangsters and their connections to Vegas is icing on my education. Also, I think you ought to change the date on the Kennedy half dollar with the hole in it. It appears to be a 1965 mint piece. The 1964 was the last sterling silver year, and, of course, LBJ was in charge when silver was yanked from the coinage. Silver also "getting it in the head", as represented by a silver Kennedy half, would be a better visual.

There was a mob presence in Las Vegas in the 1940's, before they built the Flamingo, I think. An early Vegas Hotel owner, Beldon Katleman, moved to Los Angeles in the 1950's. The rumor at the time was that he was living large on insurance money gotten from burning down the El Rancho. Katleman was the first husband of Leonore Annenberg, Chief of Protocol of the U.S. during the Reagan administration. Also, could you do a video on Sidney Korshak, supposedly the lawyer for the Chicago outfit, protector of their interests west of the Rockies, and one of the owners/boss of bosses? Very interesting about Mickey Cohen, Lana Turner and Johnny stompanato. I like old movies and love Lana turner. I read books on Lana turner and some people today still believe that Lana turner stabbed Johnny stompanato. But her daughter took the rap because of her age she would be released soon! Tommy DeSimone/ Devito and Tony Spilotro ( Nicky Santoro) we’re two different characters from Scorsese films Goodfellas and Casino, both played by Pesci in 1990 and 1995 respectability but I understand the confusion.

Great show, fellas. I watch you guys all the time, but I have to correct you on one thing... I think Mark is confusing Tommy Di Simone with Tony Spilatro. Both are characters portrayed by Joe Pesci. Tony and his brother were killed by the Chicago outfit, they belonged to (as seen in the movie Casino), in a corn field. Tommy Di Simone is who Pesci was portraying in Goodfellas. Di Simone was wacked by John Gotti as revenge for Di Simone, a Lucchese associate, killing Billy Batts who was a made guy in the Gambino family.

My thinking about the ink and etc from handling papers is there often is mercury from paper or ink or both. If he was sensitive (as German auricular medicine teaches) to the charge of mercury, his body'd be in dysautonomia. It brings on a panicky feeling, and so of he was in that state the woman commenting on his hands could feel enormous to his nervous system and trip the OCD.

in casino pesci's character was loosely based on Chicago mobster Tony "the ant" Spilatro...who was beaten to death with his brother michael and buried in a shallow grave in roselawn indiana (they both were abducted from a mob safe house in the chicago suburb of bensenville, next to o'hare airport)...michael owned a restaurant bar in the galewood section of chicago (Hoagie's) and was good friends with tom selleck and robert conrad both would hang out at hoagie's and its bar tootty-toots back in the late '70's and early -80's...
