Great tying…thanks! This fly is a permanent resident of my Streamer Box for Brookies.

Thanks a lot Tim, great video. I tie these in white and chartreuse, black and chartreuse (The Dixie Finn)* ...and sometimes white and red. The variation that has worked the best, has been the latter, white and red. Stacking’ and whackin’, tinsel and shorthairs, thanks a lot! *. The Dixie Finn - because here in the South, we say, “...if it ain’t chartreuse it ain’t no use!”

when I saw this pop up this morning on my email, I thought you must be revisiting the "old classics", and I could have sworn I'd watched (years ago) a tightlinevideo version of this fly being tied! I'm pretty sure the Mickey Finn was the second fly I ever tied, right after a Clouser minnow.

Ahhh. In 1979, young Mikael wades on slippery cliffs and among the rock wrack on the west coast of Sweden. With a Mickey Finn tied in to the tippet in pursuit of sea trout...

This was the first fly I learned to tie in my early teens. Like Spencer, I never added a rib either. I also used calf tail instead of buck tail but when you buy your own materials with your allowance, you make due. Thanks so much for getting around to this classic and bringing back fond memories.

Ted P good memories tying and fishing this fly. The first trout I ever caught fly fishing was fooled by this fly.

Thanks Tim - a real classic! The Mickey Finn (along with his white/red/white brother) have been my go-to attractor bucktails for decades.

First fly I learned how to make with Per Lundstrom when I lived in Sweden. Back then I used marabou. I like to tie it with the hair on the underside of the shank to make the hook point ride up and lower the possibility of getting snagged on the bottom. Very versatile pattern that can be done on jig hooks as well. Thank Tim for this flash back.

Awesome for Tim! A favorite classic fly I love to tie and swing in a river anywhere trout swim. Thanks for sharing another great video! Cheers!

When I started fly fishing I think I was 11 I had two flies. A Mickey Finn and a Mickey Finn. You could buy them at the hardware store and came in plastic package two to a package. Those two flies accounted for a mess of bass and panfish. Haven’t fished one in years. About time to tie up a few. Thanks for the lesson.

Nice tie per usual Tim. Ive heard a few strands of red krystal flash around the red bucktail doesn’t hurt

This was one of my go-to flies when I started fly fishing in the early 1960s. For some reason, I stopped fishing it, about the time I started fishing Wooly Buggers. I think I am going to correct that short-sightedness with the upcoming fall trout fishing. I know the wild brook trout and browns will not object.

Do you use a sink tip line or does it sink fast enough on a floating line?
@GeorgeSemel
@GeorgeSemel Год назад
@@Detroit3Pistons I fish a 10 foot type 6 fast sink tip and a 3 to 4 foot leader. I do fish it with a floating line at times.

I have a couple of those in my box, never knew what they were. They seem to work great on smallmouth though.

I used Micky Finn all of time on the north shore in Minnesota. I sometimes use different colors pattern and it work very well each rivers have it own colors. I even add crystal flash on the wing (not too much just a few strand 3 to 5). Give that a try

Saw Lee Wulff tie these and some B.N.Dace with just his bare hands at a sportsman's show decades ago.Wish I'd gotten one.

The Mickey Finn is and will alwais be to me, more effective on trout then any wooly buggers. Landlock salmon too. This is my life saver when nothing works, even tho I should start with it... Maybe i still like to challenge myself with other patterns!

Very nice tie !! When I tie the bucktail on , the fibers seem to all blend together rather than have separate layers. Even though I initially tie each bundle on top of the hook shank and on top of each other. Any tips ?

Can you use ultra wire instead of oval tinsel for the rib. This is the first fly my dad taught me how to tie, and I never tied it with a rib.
@skylarl5545
@skylarl5545 5 лет назад
Of course. It's not traditional but it'll be just fine. Remember - no matter what people tell you, you don't have to always use 100% correct materials in patterns. I substitute all the time.

Would you recommend using a #10, 4x long for this pattern or is a#8 the smallest hook to use? Thanks.

Mickey Finn is a drink slipped to someone you want to incapacitate. Kinda like a trick. It is also this red yellow fly people fish with. Hope that helps.
