A LONG ROAD HOME
How I long to feel the salty wind
off Galveston Bay in my face once again
A warm southern wind on my weather-worn skin
Perhaps I would not feel so old
Now I long to hold the golden sand
in the hollow of my hand
Stand for a while there and fill in the hole
left in the heart of a wounded old soul
Here's to tomorrow; here's to today
Here's to whatever I never did say
Here's to old friends who have gone separate ways
Here's to the memories
How I long to be in those East Texas woods.
I would be in those old Piney Woods if I could
on a hot summer mornin' down Centerville Way
...the windows rolled down in my old Chevrolet
Cruisin' the backroads with nothin' but time
three nickels short of having a dime
Miles from the highway, no hill left to climb
Me and the whisperin' pine
Here's to tomorrow; here's to today
Here's to whatever I never did say
Here's to your love, you are happy, I pray...
Out on this long stretch of Interstate 10
that ol' Del Rio station just keeps rollin' right in
Many the night it was my only friend.
Just me and the radio
The Silver Moon Cafe was once out this way
Like Route 66, boys, it too had its day
and this rusty old sign here is all that remains
My, how the times have changed
They tell me ol' Bud Rose hocked his guitar
Bought a ticket to Nashville to become a big star
Now he works on a bottle and he lives in a car
Do you still have your dreams?
You remember the old town here yesterday?
The walk from the Ryman to the Linebaugh Cafe?
We would stop in at Tootsie's and Tubb's on the way
And slowly head east down to First and Broadway
Hey, look at that ol' river, Bud, how it just keeps rollin'
If it was a clock I could stop, I would try
I would let it roll down on about '65
Perhaps I would not feel so old
Hoist all the sails, Bud, to hell with the breeze
Send me a wind that will bend every tree
A storm that will bring every man to his knee
Here's to the howlin' sea
Here's to tomorrow; here's to today
Here's to whatever I never could say
Here's to the piper; the bastard's been paid
Down on this long stretch of Interstate 10
El Paso to Phoenix, to L.A. and then
It is north by northwest, I just follow the wind
And by midnight tonight I will be
home in Springfield again...

I am 77 years old. I listened to Mickey back in the 1970. Now as an old man I am so thankful for the ability to pull up all these old songs and people like Mickey. There is nothing like memories, especially when you grow old. Thanks to the people who made this possible whoever you are. I wish I had been born 20 years later so I could enjoy this computer world and all the great music available on RU-vid and elsewhere.

I am on a psychiatric ward at the moment where I have been for nearly 3 months. The place can be very trying at times and I have to say that this song totally relaxes me when I am feeling anxious and wound up. Thank you.

I had a private concert. I was Micky's and Susan's home teacher. Once I visited them on their houseboat when both were sick and never left their bed while I was there. Micky was the kind of man who did not let his fame go to his head. He sang his version of the trilogy on the Bob Hope special. Micky was an Air Force veteran, professional fisherman later on and then entertainer. He lived for a time in Hendersonville, Tennessee where I make my home.

I used to work with geriatrics, now I work with infants & children in a hospital. I want to play this for the infants and whisper to them to enjoy every part of their lives, and don't wait to look back on it and regret what they've missed. Mickey wrapped up his whole life in one song.

It's a shame that two folks pressed the dislike-button (or maybe just a mistake, cause their fingers shivered due to the sheer, incredible beauty of this music...

This is about a Man, By a man, that the Pop & Country world didn't get. But I did and the others who do are lucky with this gifted man. We will always remember you Mickey and thanks. Your Fan, Tim M. Otto

I came to hear the music before I came to be, Mickey befriended me and brought me to Nashville. He was the greatest influence on my life and I gave him a couple of lines. Both outsiders, we both moved on. I thank him every day. Sweet memories.

My understanding is that Micky proposed to Susan by phone. She came to Nashville and they married. Susan was part of the New Christy Minstrells.

I wonder if I was alone in noting the name Karlthimmel below. A fine drummer from 40 years ago. I'm sure he recorded with Mickey. Good to know you're still around. I was a geologist before I met Mickey. Told him the Great North-West wasn't safe. He bought a cabin in Oregon. Then came Mt. St. Helens. Wonder if it made The San Mateo Times.
