Micro 4/3's is NOT Dead, here's why | GH6 for Filmmaking in 2024

At the time I was a FX3/FX30 shooter, and when Gerald Undone said that statement it really made me upset (not for myself) cause there could be a percentage of the audience out there that Micro 4/3 could only be the budget they could afford (NOT everyone is so fortunate enough to make RU-vid money or go out and get a $2500 Sony camera). So fast forward to today and I no longer use Full Frame equipment but instead use a rigged out GH5s and it's the most fun I've had while filming real paid events (I come from a background of Manual Focusing so I don't mind the lost of Auto Focus). With all due Respect, I stopped watching Geralds videos cause he should have known better to make such a statement as that one. Especially now that we have a G9 ii with Phase Detect Autofocus, it's going to haunt him

I have the money to buy any camera in the market, but I use GH5 and GH6. I really felt in love with LUMIX and now I am shooting with anamorphic lens and open gate mode is fantastic

I shoot all my RU-vid videos still with a GH5 man and the channel is growing fast. No matter if full frame or M43 what matters is the end result! Nice video bro thank you. It's cool to know you'll be around more often in 2024 but don't rush. Love your content. cheers

Great video man. As someone who has both the FX3 and GH6, the GH6 holds it own in most of the same situations and is way better for handheld work. Well done man, nice video.

Great video and great content. I haven’t upgraded to the GH6 from my GH5 yet, but kind of waiting to see it they release a GH6s type camera. Something like the GH5s. Lower megapixel count for better low light performance , oversized multi-aspect m43 sensor for a slightly wider field of view, shallower depth of field, etc.. Also, from one creator to another, just a little advice. I know it takes a bit more time, but I think it’s a good idea to edit out your breathing sounds. It can be a little distracting. I have the same habit of talking then taking a deep breath, and it’s really comes out in the audio. Anyways, great video and I agree with all your points.

Jeremy, although i do not shoot M4/3 any more (gone full frame) agreed of course it is not. done, not even close. Black Magic, Panasonic, Olympus (you know their new name), are all still in the game. I love, love, love my GH5 just not low light, self filming and auto focus that has all improved I understand.

Just because Gerald Undone says micro 4/3rds is dead brings me to one of my major complaints about the whole Internet-Social Media "Influencer" movement, which is one I think needs to go away ASAP ! Gerald, a fellow Canadian, is indeed very knowledgeable about mirrorless camera technology, but I don't always agree with everything he says. I also shoot some material with a $1,000.00 CAD ZCAM E2C Micro 4/3rds mount camera, and I can also attest to the quality I can obtain with the format - especially when I shoot in 12 Bit ProRes RAW HQ output to my Atomos Ninja V 👌. Although some folks in our independent, freelance shooter industry complain that RAW shooting is somewhat overrated, there's certainly nothing overrated by the results which can be obtained from these cameras when you go from 10 Bit 4:2:0 to 12 Bit 4:2:2. The results from RAW shoots with micro four thirds cameras is a difference your eye can plainly see, and what your clients also can see, IMHO. I think the GH6 is a beast. I also think the S1H is a beast, albeit with a full frame sensor. The Lumix GH series of cameras are truly excellent.*

Nice to see someone still making videos about how great the GH6 is. I bought it as my first real camera when it was relatively new, so it holds a special place in my heart and it's nice to see people still advocating for it for a variety of work! At the size and price point compared to the wild range of codecs and frame rates available, I still feel my GH6 packs a punch. I was almost inclined to buy a 2nd one for interview stuff and B cam role. But GH5S colours are so similar that it does the job pretty well.

Great Video! The footage looks great, a little bit too much noise for my taste - but otherwise it looks top tier👌🏻 The thing is that today you can get an apsc camera for around the same price, thats gonna have prob better low light performance and better dynamic range, and many of the features of the GH6. For a few hundred bucks more you can get the Fuji xs20 new and that has basically the same video specs as the XH2s with 6.2k open gate recording. But I am sure it lacks some features of the GH6, so to each and their own. Cameras are just tools and we all value different things for ourselves🤘🏻

Do you have videos on GH6 rigs with monitors recorded to SSD? Also, what setting would you recommend for the internet distribution of a dramatic narrative film?

I agree with your sentiments. I often film corporate events with the GH6 and all interviews with S1H or S5mk2. When the GH7 arrives with PDAF I’ll upgrade. Only thought for you is to listen to your video before publishing, you clearly had a cold when you filmed. I’ve uploaded vids too with mistakes in a bunch of times myself BTW😉

I'm a OM1 user, I can say m43 will die if they don't innovate newer ideas to separate itself from the competition. Another thing that would help is to doing something about those prices. It's on the higher side, closer to some high end APC sensor cameras will better capabilities.

I purchased this camera for the same reason $1000 its too good to pass up, too many people get caught up in MFT and bad autofocus. Neither are a real problem. Even in low light ive just purchased the fastest lenses possible and added a speed booster to some EF glass. Glad you made the video

3:47 I simply call bullsh- on this one. The dynamic range limit is not because of the micro 4/3 sensor, it's because of the noise. If you had looked at the chart you'd have seen the camera can detect 14 stops of dynamic range, indicating the sensor is being read out at 13 bits. 14 bit readout sensors can detect up to 14.9 stops, hence why all the other cameras reach that ballpark. The GH5 was also capped heavily with it's VLOG-L and would only encode LOG at 9bit instead of 10bit severily limiting it's dynamic range, so it's something panasonic is known for doing. This is also the reason why SIGMA FP is capped at 12 stops since it only reads out in 12bits. If the GH6 had one more bit (14bits total), even if it couldn't take advantage of it and simply read it as noise, it would help the noise reduction algorithm by a f- ton thus allowing you to lift the shadows more to reveal information there. With good noise reduction this camera should do 12 stops easily. So don't put it down for for it's sensor size since it can easily make up for it with good post work

How is the autofocus on g6 as you didnt mention much about that? I have a gh5s and find it good in low light, never us the autofocus though as its terrible. Im considering buying the g6 but would really love an improvement in the gh5s AF if you could comment on that and did you say the low light isnt good?

And then there is the BGH1, something of an oddball. But a fun little box of a cam. You have to have an external monitor, but since I like to record ProRes on a Ninja, adding one as for monitoring was a natural. Takes some getting used to the menus and the function buttons. A great little package, even when fully built out with mattbox + monitor + external battery to power everything. As you say, as long as you are adding light anyway - which in most cases you should be - the dynamic range is more than adequate.

Ive never shot a gh body but i have the s5ii and an oly em5ii. I think there's a few issues - one Panasonic gets a bad rap in general. Your average newbie wanting a camera is deciding between a canon or sony because those are the popular brands. People are automatically distrustful of brands that are less popular. This is unfortunate, because they offer the best price/performance ratio on the market. Another issue is that consumers dont necessarily know what they want. They want a "pro" camera but don't put any thought into what a pro actually uses. Case in point - whens the last time youve sat down in a theater and watched a movie shot at f/1.4 with af locked on a character as they walk around and blurring out everything else in the scene for the whole movie? Yet that's what people think they need to make a cinematic video. Or whats the last professional movie you've seen shot at night with available light? But that's what they want their camera to do to be "pro." I got an s5ii because im not a working pro and wanted something with AF that could keep up with my toddler for home videos and use for my personal ethnography projects and also use for my photography. The gh6 produces excellent video in the right hands. The a7siii produces horrible footage in the wrong hands. Better to get a gh6 and invest the rest of your budget in audio and lighting than to think you need a high end sony to be a pro.

Just bought an s1h but I literally used a gh5 for 6 years…. With the right lenses and a speed booster, you can get some really good looking shots.

Let me make it simple for you. MFT is good for: 1. Very good internal stabilization (small sensor - easier to stab) 2. Cheap lenses (because of the smaller sensor size mft lenses are less complicated and can cost twice as less than full frame). The downside? Less resolution (yes lenses have their own resolution and shooting 6k on a lens that barely supports 4k is a waste of drive space). Aperture. MFT will never allow to blur the bg like FF. So choice is basically between convenience and beauty.

Bro the gh6 hangs in my lineup for sure. I have it as a standalone body and use it with a speed booster or native mft glass and it’s dope. I’ve been happy with lowlight shots and have rigged it out and PRR in 4:3 is awesome! These days my main cameras are the eva1 & s1h. Gh6 is my social media camera for the open gate shooting. Also the photos it takes are dope. The grain just makes it look so good. No complaints with the gh6 and it will hangout with me in my camera trio lineup. Great video bro!

I fricken love my GH5 set up and would LOVE to get the GH6 - it looks to be the ultimate camera to shoot sports as well. The only thing that makes me nervous with MFT is low light. That's why I bought a GH5s. I think the GH6s will be very popular with filmmakers.

GH6 is probably my favourite run and gun camera in my kit. I own two of them and they are easily the ones I reach for if I need to do any travel shoot where flight is involved. A two camera kit, all accessories, sound, and batteries to power it can fit in my carry on backpack. I run with the native glass and have the option to shoot from 24-200FF equivalent on lenses that weigh less than a single FF lens. Plus with a 1TB card in the GH6, I can run all day without worrying about media. And a simple V Mount battery and a clip that lets it sit on my pocket and I’m powered for all day as well. There’s not much that comes close. I Panasonic releases a GH7 with nearly identical specs but with better autofocus and (fingers crossed) an internal ND system I 100% am long term bullish on M4/3

if this camera will decrease to the price same of the gh5. i will definetely get one. but to be honest we can find s5ii is below 2k$ in the market. a little more money you can have one.

I have the gh6 and the s5ii, I love the gh6 for the 120 4k no crop. Most of the time I use it for B roll, but it is definitely alive

I Agree with, I take videos with the Lumix gh6 wildlife and it is just perfect, especially in slow motion. Even in the dark!

I agree that the gh6 is an amazing camera. And that micro four thirds is NOT dead. But Gerald said if you want the “best” image, then micro four thirds is dead. And in that, I agree also. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad image, or a low quality image. Rather, full frame and aps-c has finally caught up, and our offering a “better” image quality then micro four thirds. In either case, micro four thirds is an amazing format, especially for video.

The fact that so few people speak about the AFC out of focus "bug" when using frame rates below 48fps (24/25/30) in 4K/C4K/5,7K shows the cameras doesn't sell well. Panasonic never corrected this bug and they don't care. Between all my lenses (10-25mm, 25-50mm, 12-60mm etc) only my 25mm f1.4II works well with low frame rates. Even in Open Gate 5.8K, the AF pulses much more than on the GH5. Also, the fine details are worse than on the GH5 in 4K/C4K because of the digital moiré filter, details look rougher when cropping. In 5,7K details are as good as on the GH5 4K but the IBIS takes a hit, and again almost no influencer speaks about the slight crop and worse IBIS in 5,7K ... It's a shame because the colors are fantastic, much better than my GH5 in my opinion, even better than my G9II and S5II.

The GH6 is a fantastic camera that really outperforms its price tag. It punches way above its weight. The only real issue is the autofocus, which isn't great in scenes with a lot of fast movement. But apart from that, I have no major complaints about this camera.

The GH6 is an incredible camera and more than enough for most people. However it did have quite a few major issues out of the box like streaking, lower DR at low ISO values and of course the lack of reliable AF. What is exciting is the G9II pretty much fixed all of these issues. DR at base ISO is now better than most APSC cameras (barring XH2s, C70 and some other cameras) and even Canon FF cameras. It is only half a stop behind the top of the line FF cameras. The streaking also seems to have been completely fixed and the AF is competitive with the very best. I think Panasonic did a terrible job marketing it as what it is, a hybrid beast and instead leaned into the photography crowd, which there aren't many in the Panasonic camp.

M43 would be even more amazing on like an 8-12 MP sensor. Holy moly that would be amazing

I am a M43 user. I do not do much video. Mostly do short 30” clips. I do street photography so I’m photography centric. I love the small size and lightweight characteristics of the GX bodies and primes. The zooms are also relatively small and light. M43 is more than adequate for my needs. Yes, the video features are rich. The GH6 doesn’t interest me. Olympus may be struggling. Panasonic M43 seems to be alive and well. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Still enjoy using my GH5 (bought 2nd hand dirt cheap - just about $500 last year) which indeed tick all boxes in my checklist. Even its said lousy AF is still good enough for my work, thus nothing much left to complain about. Even though MFT is really going to be a dead format in the future that wouldn't matter AT ALL to me. By that time I would have used my GH5 to death (therefore worth every dime spent). And I'll let me in the future decide which direction to go then... In the end it's only about the RIGHT TOOL for the RIGHT JOB, and that's it.😃

The gh6 if you,are behind the camera its a beast, but if you want to use it alone for other type of video for RU-vid like vlog or something like that is not so good because of the autofocus, but with the new g9ii that has phase detect autofocus then mft is more than alive.

A lot of the people that have those absurd opinions on mft aren’t even “filmmakers”

I cut my teeth on the GH4/5/5s. Used a combination of M4/3 lenses and adapting canon EF glass. These cameras are tools and you can get incredible footage. I think due to the accessibility of full frame cameras now it ends up being a bad spot for the M4/3 system to be in. You can but a cheap used FF Canon, Sony, and even LUMIX for less than the GH6 used. And novices hear “full frame” without even knowing what it means and lose their minds. Ultimately these are all tools. Me personally I don’t think I’ll go back to anything M4/3 mostly because it doesn’t suit my needs and isn’t the look I prefer in my footage.

m43 is not dead, but manufacturers tries hard to kill own business: - pany was focused on filmmakers cameras (quite small market) and recently released g9II that is nice camera, but 6 years people waited for an update! And most of us wish to see it in compact body, like GX. - om all in for a wildlife (that is also quite small market), recent om announce is very disappointing. - where is new compact but feature packed and powerful cameras we like m43 for? There is nothing. - even from entry filmmakers position, where is vlogers / youtube content creators cameras? Nothing again. GH or even G9 is overkill, it should be compact and weather sealed.

I almost bought this camera recently because I found an incredible deal on eBay, but I was looking for a second camera to pair with my S5, and at the end of the day, low light capability is really important for the way I work, and so I just wound up buying a second S5 for even less money. But I’m sure the GH6 is incredible. And like the original s5, not to be overlooked.

The fact that the gh6 is 1,000 dollars used proves Gerald's point. Im sure if Panasonic actually sold it closer to tbe resale value, the line would literally have to be killed off. And its only a good deal in that unsustainable context (let alone how screwed over the seller must feel for losing 60% value in a year or less). Good vid but that resale value tells me its dead.

M43 is dead to me. The OM-1 was so disappointing and the OM-1 1/2 has been discounted so quickly that I predict we won't have any new products released in 2025. Everyone thought 4/3 format would last forever, remember?

It's dead. Only in name and only for people who want to take video. The original concept was to have compact but very high quality cameras for photos (and casual video) needs. The current cameras are all unnecessarily large and expensive due to the changed mission to try to compete with FF. That is impossible, competing with large format, and that is why there is no future.
