It would be hard with work pieces this long, but the best mill scale removal I have used is a 12 hr vinegar bath. Maybe you could do that with a PVC pipe a little longer than the work pieces? After a 12 hr soak, what is left of the mill scale just comes off with the wipe of a towel. It's amazing.

This is such a great video series, I am literally sad when I reach the end.... It's inspiring and I want to build that so much but i think pricewise it's a bit outside the my budget but we will see what the total ends up being! Amazing job and I have watch all the other videos you have on your previous trailers. One question for you on this video if you don't mind. This composite panel seems thin and I was wondering how flexy is it on the floor? I have looked at the trailer build and it's got some decently wide spacing between the various cross members and so I was wondering if that material is rigid enough. I did catch on the video some flex as you walk on the floor. around 19:27 you can see some flex with light reflection (still wearing crocs I see while fabricating with metal.... bold move.... LOL). Thanks
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 2 года назад
Hey man!! Thanks for watching! Really appreciate the support it’s people like you that keep me moving forward making more videos! The panel does flex a tad on the floor. Once we I add the insulation board and the engineered flooring it should make it considerably stronger! Adding more supports would not hurt at all. Maybe something I would have done differently 👍🏼 it’s a learning process on every build and yes the crocs have been with me almost every step of the way 😂😂
@DeepSouthOverlander
@DeepSouthOverlander 2 года назад
@@Adv4x4 ah! That makes sense in regards to the rigidity once insulation and flooring is in place. I actually really like the idea of the composite!! Water tight and lighter than wood! Do you think it’s a project you can tackle with flux core ? I don’t see why not but You have more experience welding.

@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 Год назад
No problems what so ever! It’s been doing great. I’d consider either moving the axle back just a hair to help with tongue weight or making sure you always have some sort of load in front of the camper box itself to help. It can seem a bit light on tongue weight without a bike on the carrier

How would you approach using ACM sheets on areas, (the bottom for example), that are larger than the sheet itself? Let’s say the trailer is 6ft wide, could you just use two 3ft wide pieces and join them over the trailer spine with VHB tape and sealant? Do you think this would be enough to keep leaks from happening? I talked to Piedmont today and they have the 3mm 5x10 locally for $153 a sheet. Thanks!
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 Год назад
I chose to avoid having any seams for this exact reason haha. I’m sure you could find a way to seal it up but I preferred to not go that route! Same reason I made the box 48” tall, made the side walls very simple with 4x8 sheet!
@ProjectFaceOff
@ProjectFaceOff 2 года назад
Would those panels allow for a partial cut through so that you’d be able to bend it for a 45 degree bend? I was wondering if that would have allowed you to have a continuous edge on the front end of the trailer. Overall, impressive build and great attention to detail. Looking forward to the next episode.
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 2 года назад
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes that could work! But the only problem there is available sheet length. If I were to do that to the two front edges then the sheet would end somewhere in the middle of the front flat surface
@ProjectFaceOff
@ProjectFaceOff 2 года назад
@@Adv4x4 It's all compromises. I was figuring that first seam would be your penetration point for water so having one continuous piece for the that front edge might be better. I've not used that corrugated aluminum sheets yet so I don't how easy it'd be. It may be hard to get the bend to be perfect so doing it your way was probably a better approach. Once I'm finished with my Wagon, I'm planning on building a wedge roof-top tent. Good luck on the rest of your build.

Thank you! About $500 in metal & also $500 in panels! As far as the r value goes I’m not sure about that just yet until I go pick up my 3/4” insulation board! Either way high R Value isn’t a huge concern for me because it will be far more insulated then a tent as is haha.

Are your walls flush with the bottom frame? Or did you inset it a little so that the ACM would be flush to the bottom frame? Or did the ACM extend a little past the bottom frame?
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 Год назад
The skeleton of the frame is flush with the outside edge of the frame. The ACM sits on top so yes it does sit out a hair further then the main frame itself

Water control Space temperature is absolute zero. Point an IR thermometer at the sky on a clear night night an it will read 30f-40f colder than ambient temp. Under any combination of conditions there will be one of six sides inside that is the coolest and the presence of a living thing will release water into the air that will condense on the inside of one or more surfaces when the inside air dew point equals the inside temperature of the coldest panels. The inside will always make water somewhere. Attempting perfect sealing at the lowest point is always going to result in water retention at low points that are usually not readily accessible. Imo you would be better served to leave unsealed points at the extreme lowest corners of your build to facilitate water removal they don’t have to be large and I would as either screen or metal wool to deter insect entry. Even attempting to totally enclose a welded tank will result in more internal corrosion than one that has open self drainage at the lowest points I would drill the frame holes for wiring runs on the bottom sides extreme ends wherever possible. We learned with welded aircraft tubing structures that the ones that had low point holes to the atmosphere lasted much longer than ones that were completely sealed in most cases.

Nice Build Concept, however be very carefull of using ALUPANEL, DIEBOND or whatever architectural panel, bonded to steel or Aluminum frame, as it will conduct temperature and moisture built up inside, and you will see the moisture, outlined by the tubing. This is wholy dependant on outside temp, and moisture contenet inside. Also the finish on these panels is not very durable, expensive also.

@Adv4x4

Only had condensation the one night we ran a propane heater for a little in there! I have since made a diesel heater to combat that (latest video on the channel) other then that we try to always sleep with windows open or fan on!
@joerigillissen9324
@joerigillissen9324 Год назад
@@Adv4x4 that's nice! I always wonder what happens in smaller confined spaces, especially in camper builds. It takes a lot of engineering and vapour barriers to make a construction well equipped against internal condensation, resulting in mould and such. Seems like you have that figured out pretty well

Wild animals , two legged criminals abound in the woods these days . I want to feel safe , and if that means a HEAVY camper with THICK walls so be it ! Otherwise I might as well sleep in a TENT ! Call me an old fouggy , any day ! 👀
