I subscribed just a few minutes into this as the presentation is so elegantly done and engaging to watch. Well done. Have a great day and thanks for this top video.
Smaller, more functions, included iPad stand/support, and cheaper than the outgoing version... Thank god a company like BlackMagic still exists, now I might finally be able to afford a color panel (I don't live in the US so these sort of things are way more expensive here).
The main reason they have such a pro consumer approach to business is because they are privately owned. If they ever become a publicly traded company it’s only a matter of time before Resolve becomes a subscription and they start squeezing every last penny they can out of their customers. I really hope they never sell out.
It's a double edged sword. They innovate at a rate that makes your old BM equipment lose value very quickly. I have a Micro panel at home and at work, which just lost 80% of their original $1000 value 😅. Might still be tempted to sell cheap and get the new improved panel.
The fact that this has more functionality than the original micro panel but at a lower cost is pretty amazing. The missing functions from the o.g micro panel that were stopping me from buying it have pretty much all been added to this panel. This is a pretty easy purchase to justify.
That is the video Blackmagic should've presented about the new Micro panel! Flawless! A must buy. I'm updating my Micro panel as soon as possible. There's only positives!
Thanks so much! I'm not sure about 1million, hehehe, but as long as the people who do watch are enjoying the videos, we are happy. Appreciate having you here.
They are still fairly new to youtube and already growing massively, I still remember them being at 2k subs not too long ago :) But their constantly high quality videos do surely attract viewers - this video has been another milestone in dedicated time and effort for them, it looked really great.
@@n9o Thanks! This April marks 12 months since we started posting Resolve content on RU-vid. We're so grateful to everyone who's been watching and supporting. So stoked to have had so many views in just 12 months. Thanks again.
I love your videos. Like Darren Mostyn, you explain stuff so clearly, with no extraneous fat, that it's a pleasure to watch. You both have very soothing voices, too, which almost makes watching videos about editing and grading in Resolve a weirdly meditative experience! You make a great team. Keep climbing those mountains!
This is huge. I don't do a ton of color correction, but will do it on a tight budget. I could never bring myself to shell out for the mini panel., but I'm ready to put my money towards this. Hopefully, I'll grow my skills and it opens the door to many other filmmakers out there. Great video!
Just made my pre order, can't wait to use this on my main rig and M2 ipad! I was saving up for the bigger panel, but now this makes a lot more sense, (for a little while at least) I still enjoy my Wave 2 that can work with pretty much any application, but its limited in resolve, this micro panel should step up on its current shortcomings.
The chapter marker timing with the resolve logo animation couples with three iOS RU-vid app’s haptic effect between chapters to make it seem like they somehow added a haptic effect to the logo animation
Wow wow wow!! Amazing work Blackmagic! I cannot wait for a new speed editor please! New course is also amazing! You guys rock I'm going to buy another licence now excited for the future with the new software update and hopefully updated hardware!
So glad you're enjoying everything. Thanks for supporting the channel :) Yeah, new speed editor would be awesome. We'll have to wait to see if Blackmagic develops anything in the future.
I like this a lot. I’ve wanted a panel for years, this seems like the first one with the price and functions that make it reasonable for someone that doesn’t strictly color for a living.
This was such an awesome and concise video. You've earned yourself a subscriber. Also convinced me to strongly consider the new panel since the old one never fully appealed to me (price to features)
Amazing video and excellent quality. I'm a newbee willing to learn DvR as much as possible and this new tool is pushing me over...hoping to have it someday. Congrats for the chanel!
I loved it from the first moment I saw it, and it's actually pretty affordable. Thank you very much for walking us through. Love your videos! Cheers from Italy
I would love you to review the Replay Editor, but not for a Broadcast/Live replay editor, but as a regular Multicam Editor, to see if it’s an advanced Speed Editor, or if it’s really just meant for Broadcast Replay….
Absolutely spot on critic/recommendation about being able to use stop/play button to hijack a ring for transport controls - 100% agree. That said, even using the Advanced panel, you'll always find yourself in a position where the mouse or keyboard is superior. Also, no one seems to have addressed the MacOS Sonoma being the only supported OS. Wonder if that will change by release.
Thanks so much, we appreciate you watching and commenting. Yes agreed, mouse and keyboard are always going to be a part of anyone’s workflow! Windows is supported. I’ve had that confirmed. It might just be a manual typo. I would suspect Linux is too. The BM team have always done really well maintaining version parity.
Great presentation with all the information laid out logically and without the hysterics I see elsewhere. I've hemmed and hawed over the Micro in the past, but when I saw this with the price and new features, I put myself on the wait list with B&H. Definite purchase for sure. I like that it's portable and though I haven't tried Resolve for iPad, I likely will. I'll take a look at the course. I've used Resolve for a long time but in fits and starts. I probably need some point one towards an end instruction.
Thanks so much! The panel is great. You'll love the course too if you get chance to take it! You know we like to be thorough. And even if you have some Resolve knowledge already you don't know where your knowledge gaps are until you go through the subject thoroughly. If you have any questions about the course, please reach out. Thanks for watching and commenting.
We're using an anamorphic lens that has focus fall off at the top and bottom of the frame. We're using it on an open-gate vista vision sized sensor too, which exaggerates those qualities. Hopefully you'll notice that the centre of the frame is super sharp. It's a deliberate look. Hope you liked it.
Maybe it is just me, yet I would love to be able to fully utilize this panel on the Edit and Cut pages. Somehow I imagine it would be heaps of fun to use those adjustment rings and track balls for moving around your (multi-cam?) footage, and there are enough buttons to control a lot of the editing tools. We'd have to remember a bunch of additional hotkeys but hey, that is part of the fun. Would just require some changes in DR...
Yeah, that would be interesting. Blackmagic does a good job of keeping their devices simple though which we think is one of their strengths. Perhaps extra functionality will get added in future firmware updates.
Thank you for highlighting that the Micro Color Panel doesn’t replace a speed editor. That makes this a no go for me. If they had included speed editior functionality I think I would’ve immediately purchased it. I’ve been using DaVinci Resolve on iPad and definitely wish there was a mobile focused speed editor.
@@paoloa424 yes and no, the speed editor is a rather old design. It’s meant to be on a desktop. The new micro color panel is designed to be both portable for use anywhere as well as on the desktop. So that’s why I anticipate that maybe next year we will see a micro speed editor.
@@foglebr they have two editing keyboards. The Speed Editor, the small one thats definitely for travel. I use it for my ipad. I would say its more for the cut page. Then there is the Editors Keyboard which is the full size that i use for my desktop for the edit page but also for the cut page. It’d be awesome if they came out with a seperate keyboard solely for the Edit page. I would buy it too. But the edit page of davinci is more catered to a sit down desktop session, not for travel. I believe thats what the cut page is for with the current speed editor. Which is what i do, dump media, cut it it up, sync the cloud to my desktop setup, edit from there where the environment is controlled.
We have a very similar approach to the edit/cut page as @paoloa424. Both the cut and edit pages are fantastic, we use both for different things. Yeah, it would be nice to see a combined panel, but I imagine that might be rather compromised. Is is it possible to fit all the Fairlight, color and edit controls on a single small panel that you'd like to use? Probably not?
I like what you typically do in your videos. However, I must point out that the Micro Color Panel will not work with the iPad until version 19 Resolve for iPad comes out... which will be when 19 comes out of beta. It might be nice if you mentioned that. Yes, I purchased a Micro Color Panel and it does not work with my M2 iPad Pro with latest version of Resolve for iPad. so WARNING to those interested in using with an iPad that they must wait until version 19 Resolve for iPad (not the beta.)
Thanks @JeffreyDMathias Yes, you are correct that the Micro Panel does not work properly with Resolve 18.x. Our apologies for not stating that in the video. We're unsure of the timetable for Resolve 19's release on iPad. We appreciate honest feedback. Those details weren't deliberately left out, they just weren't available when the video was produced. Thanks so much for watching. It's great to have you here. Please feel free to continue to ask questions or provide additional feedbacks.
Hi there :) it’s been a while! Excellent review, as always, thank you! I wonder about one thing - can you select nodes with it? It’s great to be able to create ones, but I almost always have a pre-built node structure that I use for all the shots so I personally don’t need to create nodes with the panel but I do need to jump between WB, primary and secondary nodes that I use separately in my workflow
Thanks Natalie for excellent detailed review of the newly launched color panel. Does the color panel work with all functions of HDR wheels too or is there any kind of limitations?
Thanks so much Ranjan. Appreciate you commenting. Yes, I think it works with the HDR wheels that are displayed, once they are open. I don't think there is a hardware button to switch to the HDR wheels though.
Seems like a good panel, more convenient then the big one. The whole ipad thing seems like a bit of a gimmick though. Cant imagine it would make for a great grading monitor or a good editor but cool its a option. I guess in some scenarios it could be useful.
Yeah, it's a great panel. iPad grading isn't going to be for everyone, but it's no gimmick though. The entire color page on an iPad is no joke. Very powerful and very usable. And for a lot of creators it might be all they need. Thanks so much for watching.
No "HDR wheels" functionality, and STILL no support for the promised custom mapping of the "User" button, even 4 months after it was released. Blackmagic's support for this product has been abysmal.
Great video with great information. Question…if the micro panel is not being discontinued or replaced then why would this also be called the micro panel? And this new version seems better in every way. Why would someone pay nearly double the price for the old version? Just for the heavier balls? I would be happy to trade my micro panel for the new one but I don’t think anyone would think that’s a fair trade. 😂 someone explain.
Thanks so much. We're not sure of their reasons. I'm sure there will be some that prefer the old micro. It's nice to have the choice. For the time being it's available, perhaps it will be phased out in the future. The names are different, but yes it can be a little confusing. That's why we called it the new micro and the previous micro. 🤣 Great to have you here.
@@team2films Yea, I think this panel is great for on the go or on set grading work but for at home or in a studio I don't think its as big of an upgrade. I am happy to see a lot more features but for someone like myself who works at a desktop for 99.99% of my grading work this panel isn't really that big of an upgrade. Fingers crossed for an updated Mini Panel soon! Great video and thank you for the clear simple explanations and overview.
Super cool video! I think it would be cool if an iPad could be used more as an extension of the desktop interface. For example it could show scopes. I wonder if that's possible, even on PC?
I think a really key thing about this new panel that I wasn't aware of until I looked it up, it does NOT come with a license for Resolve Studio, like the previous version did. Seems like the price of the previous one had that factored in anyway, but it's a good bit of info to know about if you were hoping to get another Studio license for another computer or coworker for example.
Yes, it can. It's possible to calibrate an iPad display. Even without calibration, they are very consistent from the factory. Please note, we're not saying that an iPad is the preferred device for a professional colourist or that it's as good as a proper reference display... but for a lot of work, it's a very viable legitimate option. If a colourist is working on content for the cinema, they will often grade with a projector. If a colourist is working on content for TV, they will often grade with a TV in a well lit room. As a great deal of content is consumed on phones and tablets, it seems appropriate to grade on one too. You might not grade a feature on an iPad, but a video for the RU-vid...
Wonderful explanation:m. Thank you so much. The video actually cleared my doubts of buying it. Does this panel come with studio version like other panel.?
Probably asked already but how to you tweak the offset (lift gamma gain wheels - is there an 'offset' mode so that the gain wheel tweaks offset instead of gain)?
Great review, thank you! Is it possible to control color temperature and exposure in camera raw section with new micro? In my workflow this is needed all the time and for me it would be a game changer. I would be very grateful if you have an answer.
Heya! The course is designed for editors, 6 of the 8 modules are focused on editing. In particular, the course comes with 2 hours of documentary media for you to use as you follow along. The footage is awesome. We're not sure yet when the launch discount will be discontinued, we'd love to make it available to as many people as possible.
Man i had just gotton the more expensive old Micro Panel, and now we have a better More portable and More AFFORDABLE new micro panel, what would I do? should I sell my Old Micro panel which is as good as new, I still have the Warrenty it's less than 6 months old I bought it in India for 85K, what should I do now?
Heya, I'm sorry! Not sure what to do. Perhaps you can sell it for a similar amount of money as the new micro panel? Either way, the previous micro panel is still a GREAT panel, that will do 80% of what you need it to. The new features on the new micro panel are not great, but the main features you use will probably be the core functions that both panels have.
