Bought my first ever digital camera a couple of months ago, Canon 6D. As an old school Canon user, it fits. I got the body and an 'L' zoom for less than £600. Just enjoying learning photography again.

I cannot agree more. I also just bought a 6D (as good as new) plus a new 50mm 1.8 STM for £375 total. Amazing value. It will never be my carry everywhere camera, but I used to shoot film on Canon SLR’s back in the eighties and now at my age I just wanted to re-live that feeling and re-learn the lost art of real photography. Amazing how much there is to learn. I am very happy. The latest M43 cameras and phone cameras are exceptionally capable (I have both) and will be a much better fit for most average people. All the best!

Started with a 70d apsc (still got it and love it). Then added a used 6d for a bargain price to try the full frame experience (love it BTW) then wanted something a little smaller for holidays so bought a used olympus e-m5 mk1. Again at a good price (and love that too). Nothing wrong with having different size sensors for different things. Each have their strengths and weaknesses and makes life more interesting 😊

I'm with you Chris. I was sucked into the full frame/MFT thing and spent a lot of money on getting full frame kit which produces images very similar to those I got from MFT. If, like me, you're getting old then the weight of the full frame gear is a disadvantage. I am also fed up with the plethora of new gear videos. Do camera manufacturers assume that we all have unlimited amounts of cash to spend on the latest equipment? Of course the new stuff has some excellent upgrades but they still take images. I have several 35mm film cameras and I get as much enjoyment from using them as from digital gear; I am more conscious of composition with a film camera. I do enjoy your videos and with your images from the northern parts of the country, it's akin to going on holiday!

@@ChrisBaitsonYeah I think it’s great at one thing, images, but as with all tech, things in the camera world have changed at a rapid rate since the 6d and having literally everything you need in a single camera like the em1 mark ii just makes more sense to me. It's a good time to be an amateur photographer. Most modern digital cameras are going to take awesome pictures, so go out and shoot with what you have. I didn't realize it before, but when you have a set up that has a disadvantage (ex: M43 and high ISO grain) it requires a bit of problem solving, which can be enjoyable at times.

Yes the EM1 mki is a fun to use camera. I am lucky enough to have several Olympus MFT cameras but the EM1 is my go to. I fitted the battery hand grip to it when I use adapted vintage lenses and it’s perfect. I prefer the tilt screen of this model too. I hope you enjoy yours.

I agree, m4/3 cameras are more than capable of achieving background blur and are a joy to use. However, DOF won't be the same if you took comparable shots with the 2 different formats on equivalent focal lengths at the same aperture. For the same reason, you get more in focus using wider apertures on m4/3 than you would on full frame when shooting landscapes. So, I think you've contradicted yourself there. But, I do agree that there's too much hype around sensor size. Each camera has there own strengths and weaknesses and its how we play to these that can create great photos.
@azjoe_6310
@azjoe_6310 7 месяцев назад
I had the 6D until I changed to M43. I will never criticize Canon, full frame, or the 6D. I went to m43 for a lighter, more portable setup that provides "fairly" equal quality and now have the EM1 mkii for travel and EM5mkii for knocking around locally.

Yesterday, I had a great time using my full frame system. Today I'm having a great time using my MFT system. The only area I am not a fan of is the trusting of software for noise reduction but that is due to one area of photography that I do, low light no flash allowed events. I would rather embrace the noise that my full frame camera has rather than spend hours working my computer hard for reducing the noise on an average of 300 photos per event. 😛

Turn off the noise reduction and do it in post-production. Problem solved 😉

I check out every time there are comments on one format or camera brand being "better" than the other. Really, there are no bad cameras, every format or model has it's limitations. At the moment I am searching for a 35mm sensor camera to use with my vintage film lenses. Good video BTW.

I started shooting from Canon 450D, 50D and then 5D2 until early this year, I decided jump into OM 5 with a sort of lens, you are right, enjoy to take photo rather than enjoy to do such comparing between FF and MFT. now I paid less and more fun.

Nice video Chris, I agree with you, the most important thing is to go out and photograph, have fun in the process and enjoy the photos you get, regardless of the equipment you have. I mainly photograph birds and wildlife and my current camera is a Canon R7 which I almost always use with a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. Many people comment that this lens is not good for R line cameras, but I am very happy with the results I have achieved. The most important thing is this, your satisfaction regardless of which lens or camera you use.

I’ve got pretty much the same setup. I have the Em5 mkiii which is very similar as the Em1 mkii but in a smaller body. It does give up one or two thing i think. I also use the 6D. Now i love them both and the m43 camera will always be my choice for travel, holidays, walking etc. The 6D does have its place. I recently shot an indoor event and it wasn’t so much it’s low light ability but the fact the files were so easy to push around in post. Very clean but the colours respond so nicely. I’m not saying the Olympus’ files don’t but the Canon just has a certain look that i like when trying to work with the files. That’s a rare event for me and on balance, i would probably still pick the Em5mkiii if i could only have one. Ps. I did get the 6D minty fresh for 200 Billy goats so they can be comparable, financially, if you shop around! Great video; thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts! I learned on Rolleiflex and Yashica medium formats and shot 35mm film on Canons for years, but nothing compares with my Olympus EM1ii bodies for fun, dependability, capability, and the way they feel in the hand -not to mention great lenses, compactness in the field, and value for money! And depth-of-field is deep when I need it and can be shallow when I want it. A great photographic experience!

I use a Sony A7iii and a couple of Olympus cameras. I've seen very little real difference between the images I can get. Each camera and lens combination has their strengths and weaknesses. There are times only 1 combination will do the job. I also are with you about the E-M1ii. I'm keeping mine until the shutter fails.

I own a Nikon Z6 and an OM-1. When it came to shooting an airshow this summer, I chose the OM-1 since I was able to carry a 100mm - 400mm zoom lens. Not only would I not want to pay for a full frame equivalent of that lens, I wouldn't want to carry it all day.

Hi Chris, in one thing you‘re not right. right is 25 (mft) and 50 (ff) is no difference, f/2,8 on the both is the same exposure time cause they catch the same amount of light, but the background blur or bokeh is not the same. for the same background blur on a ff f/2.8 you need on a mft f/1.4. if it is a difference is a personal preference - for me it is sometimes. I use sony ff and omd mft. Greetings Marcus
@chrishowell5718
@chrishowell5718 7 месяцев назад
Agree, your exposure is the same with same f-stop regardless of focal length, but you get shallower depth of field on a 50mm at f2.8 than a 25mm at 2.8. The Helios example makes this obvious: stick your swirlibokehtron on a camera with a 35mm sensor and you get a particular image; stick it on a micro4/3 sensor and you are doing the equivalent of cropping down to just the central part of the frame. The bokeh is the same, but because you're effective using a 116mm lens, your angle of view is less so there's less background off the sides to blur. Whether this matters depends on what you mainly use your camera for: if you predominantly shoot landscapes/ nature, then you probably shoot f8 a lot of the time any way, and having a smaller body and a lens that does 12-60 or 14-150 (24-120 or 28-300 in 35mm terms) in a package the size of a coke can might be more attractive than lugging big lens around. If you do want to shoot portraits, there's about half a stop difference in bokeh between an f1.4 nifty fifty and the olympus 45mm f1.8, which you can get for about £120 second hand and is so small there's no reason you wouldn't carry it every time you have your camera and might want to take portraits. Equivalent lenses exist for 'full frame' cameras but you'd never put one in your pocket 'just in case'. All cameras are a trade-off, which is why 35mm film came to be: cameras that took it were acceptably portable and 36+ shots from roll of film was decent, but it's not some golden Platonic ideal. Back in the day, people who could afford 6x6cm or 6x7mm cameras would look down on 35mm for portrait work, and even medium format wasn't as good as 8x10".

Great video and I totally agree but there is one reason not to move too a mirrorless camera whether micro four thirds or full frame and that reason only effects a small number of people including myself and that is that the EVF causes health issues for that small number of people so dslr and rangefinder’s are the only option.
@pratipkarmakar01
@pratipkarmakar01 7 месяцев назад
3:35.. nope it will not give same background blur...25mm f2.8 in m43 will give alot less bokeh than 50mm f2.8 FF.(1st its 25mm cropped into 50mm,and 2.8 aperture will work like 5.6)

@@ChrisBaitson I got the 2 kit lenses to try out the system. I liked it right away, so I got 3 primes (Olympus 17mm 1,8, 25mm 1.8, 45mm 1.8) because I wanted something small. I love your style of photography so I'm thinking that if I get a 14-40mm 2.8, I can then make the exact same pics you do (just kidding). I am, though, deciding between getting the 14-40 f2.8 + 40-150 f2.8 or getting just the 12-100 f4. TY so much for all your videos. I enjoy all of them. My 2 cents? Honestly, I am torn between liking your video and disliking it just as much. 🙂You explain the debate nicely; And in a way, you are saying we shouldn't care about this debate, right? I agree. But the very fact that you make this video... doesn't it mean that you somehow care about the debate as well? Otherwise it wouldn't be a topic worth talking about. Maybe it wouldn't even be worth mentioning that you use MFT gear (I do, too, but who cares?) because it's about the images only, not the gear. I believe that If people would stop discussing this matter on every possible occasion, we would have made a big step towards not caring aka being friends as we all make images. 🙂 WDYT?

We could, if ff didn't have to compensate for something else small! Mft have zero problems with others. Ff have problems with everything under ff. If only mf made good wide angle and had sport/bif fps options and good tele, they could be considerable.
