Great Job! Micro-Hydro has virtually no impact on the environment and the river flow. My minor in college was hydro-power. It’s awsome! Many installs can be housed in tiny sheds that are almost hidden. The local fly fishermen often bragged about this one portion of the river. For decades, few were aware that it was a tailway for a three turbine plant built in 1924! Three horizontal Francis turbines generating about 35 KW each. FO Stanley was famous for his steam cars and the hotel featured in the movie The Shinning. Few knew of his power plant. They drove past it on the way to the national park but few realized it was an operating hydro plant. It was online continuously from 1909 to 1983 when a damn break wiped it out. The dam was an irrigation dam not related to the power plant. This is why I jokingly refer to the Tesla as my favorite coal fired automobile!!!!!! Long Live Micro Hydro!!!!

That's really great stuff. Unfortunatly you are right about state subsaties, consumers have been getting artificaly cheap electricity for years. We could only sell the electricity from our hydro by selling it to the public electricity companies and they would only pay for the avoided cost ie. that extra shovel of coal they didn't need to put on because of our generation. This meant we ran our hydro on very little income for about 20 years. At long last we are getting a fair price now.

Hi Pelton, Thanks for the insightful comment. Yes the end of state subsidies for Coal power and other environmentally damaging power generation technologies is a great thing. Next it would be nice to see a higher-than market price for locally produced power from renewables. Which makes sense since they support and benefit infrastructure and lower costs across the grid. Imagine a time when the Grid becomes a massive battery. Do you have links to some photos of your system? You also in SA?

Great video. Unfortunately, hydro power generation does not work just anywhere. I live in Victoria Australia, and although we have a large number of fast flowing rivers in the North-East of the state, flow rate diminishes during our summer months. NSW has a huge hydro-power system in operation fed by the melting snows from lake Jindabyne in the Kiewa valley. Cheers.

This is excellent. Is the governing system load diversion or is it water flow reduction? Water flow reduction for off peak would be the magic trick everyone is looking for.
@martinkingori9598
@martinkingori9598 5 лет назад
this is a load diversion system to dump the excess power. for water flow reduction we would need a mechanical governor to regulate water going through the turbine runner. this is a complex system that is not needed for small hydros as it requires complicated PID control
@nez3009
@nez3009 5 лет назад
@@martinkingori9598 Yes I understand. It was a bit ambiguous in the video. If it was a flow reduction type, it would certainly get my attention. I would certainly want to see how that was achieved in a micro system. I don't think the response time would be sufficient in a micro system since demand changes can be sudden going both ways.
@martinkingori9598
@martinkingori9598 5 лет назад
@@nez3009 i also feel that the load diversion type is a waste of energy.In such arrangements that i have seen, most dumploads are heating elements..the users end up having tanks of hot water that they don't require..furthermore the turbo generator is always on full load imposing larger mechanical loads on bearings..wear and tear is much quicker
@nez3009
@nez3009 5 лет назад
@@martinkingori9598 I agree. I live in northern NY and have a hydroponic system with cast iron rads so there is no such thing as too much hot water in the winter. Never the less, I think with the right engineering/testing, something can be designed to regulate flow on a micro system. I think having some kind of battery would go a long way for rapid spikes and demand decreases.

The primary purpose of any large scale dam is flood control and water storage. The hydro power is just a bonus. The coal industry needs to start paying for their true costs caused by pollution, and the oil industry needs to start paying for all the military costs needed to maintain the foreign supply chain.

wow, great job, i can only understand that the energy company's are only using coal & nuclear power for profit, if a small community & town could all pay into a project, we could wipe out high cost of power, I saw a guy on you tube using a tank that store water, Then it uses the pressure of the falling water on a turbine to then let the water go back into the overflow. this would also prevent flooding, if there was too much water flowing though the river. but it would mean we would need a large amount of though tank to prevent this from happening. I came across an answerer a guy said, he said what if the water was to become too cold, well i can only think that, that you could have a small thermostat inside the tank to prevent the tank from dropping to a cold temperature. to prevent this happen. this would cost power, but would be a back up to prevent the system from jamming or braking completely as it made of plastic, "well the tank anyway". if you could have a auto system to switch this thermostat on, using the power of the hydro system to take so much power, but to limit the temperature so it would not fall to below 0c degrees. This would keep the electrical system going & only use a small amount of energy to heat the tank in the mean time. well the weather warms up a bit. then the auto thermal stat would shut off after temperature of atmosphere warm up. Given you all the full energy it generated in the first place. Looking at the pro & con to this. solar can only give power during the day. Turbines are dangerous to human health. due to there sound & flicking shadows. Sound can vibrate though human as sound travel though solids. That why they are set up in the sea. I saw how it had destroy a town. As energy company's ask to let out your land, then you sign it without reading it because they said it was green, you understand that need money so offer you something small to pay off a bit of your land mortgage . They then build the thing all over your land. I doesn't matter to them, they can build them right next to your house then it driver you mad, i have heard & saw a family in america. they moved into a hotel because it was that bad. The flickering in the window of the turbine drove them insane. I can say they don't always spin due to the wind. That sometimes they need shut off if they spin to fast. Ice can shatter sometimes. so there no big investment to wind. there a waste of money. the cost of building them far outweigh your profit unless they can spin for 70 years. So i say here that micro hydro is a great of source energy. it has a little impact on the environment & are fairing cheap for the investment. I live in wales we have lots of river & we hardly use them what a wait of energy. sorry for the large amount of writing people. hope you all the best & thank for reading if you had chance.

use running water energy at it's maximum potential and used it for steam boiling water so we know that water going boiling at 100 degree celsius now we turned the turbine with help of water steam so we got more efficient and effective control over the stability of voltage production instead of loss of energy in electricity circuit and very much costly technology infrastructure happiness is not the costly technology infrastructure we. can use this property of water on e every planets of universe by applying automatic setting of pressure on the system 💠💠💥💢

I regret to say the wasteful (I am one of them living in a electricly heated apartment) electricity dependant society the sheer scale cannot be supplied by any combination of wind, small or large hydro or solar power. A few large or many more medium size, gigawatt or hundreds of watt, central generating stations will be required. Fortunately these do not have to burn oil, gas or coal to power the steam turbine generators that make the electricity. There is a nuclear fission based power cycle that is neither as expensive as Uranium fueled nuclear power. It is Thorium based nuclear energy. The greatest advantage of this system is it does not need a huge and expensive pressure vessel around the core. These operate the heat generating core at atmospheric pressure. The reactors can also be built in a wide array of sizes so can power smaller cities. In the meantime in places where flowing water is available I support using as much as practical the water power available. Developing the smaller sites is easier and faster than the huge projects generally sponsored by central government's. You are using cross flow turbines. They are simple to build and Install but are not very efficient. I suggest you look up a couple of Indian turbine manufacturer. When I was working redeveloping hydro sites I looked at one of these companies and was favorably impressed.

I hate misleading crap. Those nasty big old damns and power stations.... So scaling it down is better some how? So the big one probably serves 200,000 and his serves 20 so how many of his would we need again???? 1000's of little micros all over, that wont affect the environment?? Hey I love these micro plants but all have to alter water from the river, stream or whatever. Most areas don't have white water rapids to draw from so they build a holding pond of some sort from just a few rocks to large concrete structures. There is piping that in some cases goes for 1000's of feet to build up enough head (pressure)….
@johnwyman6331
@johnwyman6331 5 лет назад
Hydropower uses dams to create the head. Micro Hydro power typically uses underground pipes to create the head there is no flooding required creating land and habitat loss. Additionally they are typically owned by the owner of the property that it powers. No big Corporation or government needed.

jonathan oxlade if they switched to liquid salt reactors there would be no radio active waste left to be a problem (they use over 90% of the fuel and what is left is safe and can be used for other things (ie magnets in wind turbines and for the production of solar panels). the problem with solid fuel reactors (current reactors) is they only use 10% of the usable fuel and that is why it is radio active. the best part of lsr's which is the same reason why they are not used is that you can not make A-bombs from the waste due to it not being radio active
