Micro Skiff AGROUND Overnight Eating Raw Scallops in Steinhatchee, FL

Things don't always go as planned. This solo overnighter on my micro skiff to Steinhatchee, Florida definitely had some unexpected obstacles to overcome. But that is what makes it an adventure! From a late night storm blowing my skiff into the reeds at high tide to the yellow flys, I didn't let the troubles ruin my good time scalloping and enjoying them raw for dinner!

Bravo Trip. Great video. Lesson learn from this excursion: if you need to anchor out in water you want depart from during low tide, anchor out far enough out with two anchors to prevent the boat from swinging around and grounding. Use an anchor pole as the second anchor for the skiff to save on space and weight. Looking forward to your next outing. Cheers....
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
Thankya sir! Thanks for the tip! If the area was completely protected from swells then I might have done that... But the wind shift would have had the boat stern to waves.... possibly. Unless I just turned it around... I reckon I could have done that though as I had another screw in anchor..... Silly me! Now I know!

Nice vid!... 2 things: one thing I appreciate most about a kayak and my old Aluminum boat is there are zero worries about what is happening to them when I'm asleep as both are beachable and non damageable for the most part. Second thing is, I'm super jealous at your ability to sleep so early! Going for an overnight next week on any random intracoastal island I stop at, but no matter what I do all day, no way I can knock off that early or sleep more than a couple hours at a time. The few times i have taken my larger boat, I only camp in a spot that I'm certain I can keep it in deep enough water that low tide will keep it afloat. I also prefer to anchor it in a little more "protected" area to provide relief from large wakes and open water easily influenced by weather. I'm a bit older than you, but still learn and change something nearly every single time. Considering you probably try new places more often than I do, you do a great job! I live a block from the waterway, but never really go more than 20 miles either direction for camping so I'm very familiar with the surroundings. For sure we share the less is more philosophy when traveling alone, which is 95% of the time for me. Keep recording!
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
Thanks! I agree about the not worry about beaching them.... I was considering a tiny for quite a while and almost bought one a few times to redo.... I'm lucky that I can relax and sleep pretty well when I'm Out There. Got to try some new places! Thanks for watching and for the great comment.

I grew up in Panama City, back when it was a sleepy little coastal town and condominium wasn't even a word! We used to gather scallops in the grass beds in the back of Watson Bayou...I remember raw scallops as being like chewing a cotton ball...the more you chewed, the bigger it seemed like it got! Developed a deep and abiding love for seafood and the outdoors in general back then, and it's never even faded, much less gone away! Good stuff, Trip, keep it coming!

Usually when I beach camp .... I put my anchor to seaward and run another line to shore (tree?) .... don't want the boat to get away at any cost. Usually OK if water runs out from under skiff. That skiff would be easy to wrestle back in the water. Raw small scallops taste like cucumbers up here to me. Love them!

Need at least a 75' of bow line with anchor and 50' of stern line anchor. My buddy and I learned the hard way camping/fishing out at horn island woke up tide and wind changed in the night had to make a swim to recover the 1520 key west after that always had 50' stern anchor
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
Wow, well for that water depth I had plent of line out. The anchor didn't fail, I just didn't anticipate the weather changing that drastically and a 180 degree wind shift. But the amount of anchor line you need is determined by the water depth. I try for a minimum of 5:1 ratio to the water depth, but more usually.
@chrisgardner7143
@chrisgardner7143 3 года назад
Search online for a “mushroom anchor.” They are great for little skiffs and take up less space. You still would want the bigger one for overnight in open water like that but with a light skiff the mushroom anchor will work in most applications.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
Yea..... I certainly know about the mushroom anchor. I'd like to carry as few as possible. My anchor didn't fail in this video though, it was the wind shift really.... The anchor still held, just my rode was to long and let me drift over the reeds.

Have some friends out of the keys. Their bucket list is to take their small crafts to fort Jefferson, so maybe in the future we could arrange a larger boat to go with a group of skiffs as added safety and carry fuel / water/ food for trip. Now to talk my wife into letting me go on that one.

Hi Trip, love the vids, I’m hoping you can help me in making a decision, my wife finally gave me the go to get a small craft lol. Seeing how you have experience with both a Gheenoe and your skiff what are the pros and cons of both. Which one is easiest to maintain? Which one is more stable for fishing (fly fishing as well)? Which one is easier to maneuver? Which one does better in chop? Any info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a big fan of clean decks though.... Probably going to pass on the anchor mate ;)

I have to ask... what is the purpose of the spikes on the front of the boat ?
@TripSmith

To keep loose fly fishing lines from blowing off the boat.

You need to put some kind of tubes in you boat alone with keeping a couple of poles that you could suspend your hammock on the boat . Yeah your in Florida the weather man can`t even get it right . Looks like you need to invest in another anchor have Two to set out . What do you say !! IT`S ALWAYS AN ADVENTURE . Boat will float soon . Get rid of that Aluminum Prop and get a Stainless Prop you will even get a little more hp out of it because it doesn`t flex like Aluminum .
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
I'll have a stainless prop for my new motor whenever it comes in :P I would like to figure something out for a hammock but it's tricky with that center grab bar.... I need to go ahead and order the anchor I know will work best...

Oh, and 2 words of solid advice....STERN ANCHOR. :)
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 3 года назад
Well, I wouldn't have wanted a stern anchor in this situation. If the waves get bad it could easily swamp the boat. I'd prefer the boat swing bow to waves and take them that way vs the stern ;)
@iamatt
@iamatt 3 года назад
Sorry bro but stern anchor is horrible advice. Been liking my mantus anchor
@DEADorALIVEkayaking
@DEADorALIVEkayaking 3 года назад
@@iamatt No, it's not. Anchor stern to the shore, far enough out that the outgoing tide doesn't ground you, stern anchor on the shore side keeps your boat where you left it. Waves don't come from the shore when you're 10' out, so there's no danger of swamping.
@iamatt
@iamatt 3 года назад
@@DEADorALIVEkayaking oh ok yeah I understand what you are saying, thought you meant stern to the Bayside. Two anchors are better than one. And I never fully trusted an anchor until I got my mantus. 19 ft shoalwater stealth, Texas gulf coast here.

how did you like the steinhatchee stain clean up after this trip ?
@TripSmith

Wasn't that bad. I do wax my boat so it makes cleaning a bit easier. There was no wax on this trip (unless the previous owner waxed it) but it wasn't bad.
