Microbial fuel cell - DIY Elbonian style

Did you know that a microbial fuel cell can be easily prepared using just a few things from your kitchen. Electrodes were prepared using carbon from water filter, stainless steel mesh, and epoxy glue. Fuel was mixture of mud and waste water. A few MFC elements can light a LED for a very long time (8 month tested so far). The nanoporous electrodes here show much better power performance than graphite felt electrodes used in some MFC constructions.
These MFC cathodes can be obtained from superaccu.com
How the electricity is generated?
Maximum voltage is up to 930 mV, maximum short-circuit current density is 13 mA. There are two nanoporous carbon electrodes: one is placed at the bottom (anode), the other is placed at the top (cathode). Oxygen can access to the cathode, whereas there is anaerobic (oxygen free) medium around anode, where bacteria work hard. Several bacteria may contribute, for example Escherichia coli can release some compounds through its outer cell membrane, which oxidize at anode. Shewanella putrefaciens and Geobacter may attach onto the carbon and directly give away electrons. Approximate electricity production reaction is the following:
cathode: O2 + 4 H+ + 4 e− = 2 H2O
anode (where (CH2O)n is a hydrocarbon): (CH2O)n + n H2O − 4n e− = n CO2↑ + 4n H+

This is a very cool experiment that proves more successful than double-cell microbial fuel cells (aerated water and mud), because the small MFC's can be stacked many times, taking up less space and producing a lot of energy. I would like to ask how many watts the Elbonian Power Station was able to produce, and how many MFC's were in the power station. Also, I would like to ask was every single MFC connected together with some wire that powered something specifically?
@chemicum

Wow I didn't know that. Do you think of you had enough (say like 10-20 MFC) you could power rechargable batteries after 2 months (like in the video?)

Well, theoretically 20 MFCs would give 60 mW so in 20 h it would be 7.2 Wh, which could load my cell phone 7 Wh battery. Practically, it would need a special charging electronics, because cell phones take 5V and want more current (and the voltage converters consume a lot). So it is maybe, a bit larger number of MFC would work more probably. But it is a good experiment idea, I could try it also

@GreenCaulerpa 7 лет назад
chemicum Mhhh I'm sure you could increase the voltage and amperage when using Mn(IV)oxide supported activated carbon as cathode, right? My theory is, that it acts as a ORC (oxygen reduction catalyst) and therefore it prevents the biofilm forming on the cathode (not the anode, this would be bad). What do you think? I plan using manganese dioxide supported carbon from an zinc-carbon-manganese dioxide battery, these should have 1-5% MnO2.
@chemicum
@chemicum 7 лет назад
It could work, but not sure whether bacteria like high concentration of manganese. If it is membraneless design, some Mn can be dissolved and diffused into another electrode. You should also make a blank mfc at the same time without catalyst at cathode
@GreenCaulerpa
@GreenCaulerpa 7 лет назад
chemicum Yes I'll try, thanks. I don't think that manganese dioxide forms a soluble salt in non acid envoirnment because it is nearly chemically inert, it will form very very very slowly soluble salt in low ph, but in neutral or alkaline invoirnment normally not

Agree, but in mfc the mud tend to go slightly acidic - maybe not enough to dissolve Mn

Nonconductive epoxy, it just connects carbon to the current collector. Sure there are ways to improve the output, this is just our first most primitive configuration. For example using more specific fuel, such as food waste or bringing electrodes closer.

Thanks for your reply! I know that the bacteria create a biofilm on the surface of the electrode, and the other bacteria transfer electrons using nanowires/mediators. But how do the electrons get passed from the biofilm to the electrode?
@chemicum
@chemicum 8 лет назад
+Matthew Cheung Some bacteria produce compounds that pass through the outer bacteria cell membrane diffuse to the anode and oxidize.

Thats just what I expected, the bacteria itself will only produce a few uA, but because of the high porosity of the activated carbon (3km^2/g) it wil act as a capacitor with very high capacity, reduce the internal resistance to a few ohms and you could get more than one amp out of it, but poorly reducing the resistance so much will totally kill every living organism inside the soil
