Thanks, I'm glad that we're back... and, you're absolutely right, there has been an astonishing amount of progress since we first taped a thermal camera to RQCX--3 Raven back in 2012!

Hi, Jon! Wow! Seeing you here (on RU-vid) is kind of freaking me out a little bit... I've had a few Embry-Riddle students (including yourself, of course) recognize me from my Roswell Flight Test Crew work, but you are the first person to move in the opposite direction -- an E-R student who shows up on the RU-vid channel. I feel as though the circle is now complete, somehow... I hope you're well!

Yes... Indeed, if you listened closely, you noticed that this camera is a product of Teledyne DALSA and is manufactured in Canada -- whereas a camera of this type produced by FLIR would generally be manufactured in Santa Barbara. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the branding. I specifically did not say "FLIR" in the title or the thumbnail of this video because, well, it's a Teledyne DALSA product -- but especially in the drone space, the name FLIR is almost synonymous with thermal imaging. I know people who are paid to teach other people about drones who think "FLIR" is a type of technology -- not the brand name for a company that produces that technology. It's going to be very interesting to see how the combined Teledyne-FLIR approaches this thorny branding problem. There is a serious prospect for very real confusion here...

Well, I'm afraid this actually represents a step in the wrong direction, as far as your hopes are concerned. Teledyne just purchased FLIR, so now there are fewer manufacturers, not more, in the marketplace. However, new manufacturers are coming online in China, India, etc., and they may begin to put price pressure on the big guys, like Teledyne-FLIR. We'll have to see what happens...
