One of the worst outcomes of the drug patent system is that when a drug is under patent, the manufacturer is disincentivized to release it as a tablet (rather than capsule)- because tablets are easier to micro-dose (and also intake through other vectors). While posing a minor illicit/abuse potential, the real threat of easy micro-dosing is to pharmaceutical profits. Even with some long-half-life generics- if I want to see whether a “sub-therapeutic” 1mg of fluoxetine works for me, I have to have a compounding pharmacy make it.

On a related note: When titrating up, I have found it best to do it twice as slow than the manufacturers recommendations. Instead of 3-4 days between increases, I do one week. Also, I only increase doses on the weekend because if I have a bad reaction, I have time to recover (whereas if I have a bad reaction during the week, I then have to call in sick or in if it happens in the middle of the day, I embarrassingly have to go home sick).

Andrew Huberman in his podcast cited research studies that showed that the most therapeutically beneficial dose of psilocybin was 20-25mg and most shrooms strains have 10mg per gram of dried shrooms. Apparently a single trip in that dosage has more long term effects than microdosing. I've yet to try but I'm hopeful and microdosing has not been as helpful for depression as I would have liked.

I tried microdosing psilocybin for over a year to treat PTSD that I’ve been diagnosed w since 2014 and found almost 0 therapeutic value from trying it, and this was in conjunction with conventional medicine and therapy. The 5 people I was trying it with also reported little to no difference and some reported that they felt even worse after trying it. The answer to these questions can all be answered by behavioral neuroscience imo. Nothing has been more helpful to me than learning that my brain is permanently changed from the trauma that it’s been put through and no amount of medicine ,questionable therapy methods, manipulation or coercion will make these symptoms go away

Yes! This was very helpful Dr. Marks!! Thank you for educating on this important topic, it poses a question I’ve had for a long time now. What if I feel as though I need to manage the psychological symptoms with severe PMDD with psych meds, is it even possible since there is a titration period and this imbalance feels directly related to my hormonal fluctuations aka it will happen each month. In other words, I have always questioned being on medications all month, taking meds every day to treat the 1 week of heavy depression 😅

I love microdosing. I have anxiety so am scared to take a macro dose, perhaps one day, but I feel great when microdosing. I find it helps PMDD. I am able to look at things more from the outside as opposed to just reacting. Also I am able to laugh more easily and not take things so personally. Maybe it’s placebo, but I feel better so that’s all that matters. Also because of said anxiety, I take half of a normal microdose. 😂

I attempted to self medicate using THC and psychedelics. It actually ended up triggering a mental health crisis, of a week long series of panic attacks and mania. After speaking with my doctor and psychiatrist, they informed me this is often the case more than not. I believe there are more natural approaches, but self diagnosis and treatment is something I think most don’t fully grasp. It’s seriously dangerous. THC is not a joke. Intense fear and panic lead to suicidal thoughts.
@Nyx773
@Nyx773 10 месяцев назад
I do not have a good reaction to the "modern" cannabis flower. I too get intense fear and all my optimism goes away, leading to intense panic. At around 20% THC with near zero CBD, the weed being sold at dispensaries is 5 times stronger than the weed from the 1990s (around 4% THC), which was twice as strong as the 1960s (~2%). I don't think most legislators or people over 40 realize that today's weed isn't the weed that they grew up with. 2+ years ago, I was able to find flower that was 10% THC and 10% CBD. Now I can't find it anywhere and am lucky if I can find vape/tinctures that are 1:1 or the unicorn 1:2 ratio.

Very helpful Dr. Marks. I can’t tolerate any antidepressants that I’ve tried because the side effects are so severe, but I can take Diazepam 5-10mg for my anxiety and no side effects. Not sure if a liquid antidepressant and micro dosing would work for me, but I’d be willing to wait out the extra time it would take to be effective. I’ve had side effects to other medications over the years, one of which landed me in the hospital when I was pregnant. I may just be extra sensitive to any type of prescription drug. So, I might be a slow metabolizer, but Diazepam works, 🤷‍♀️ and I’m so thankful for that. I don’t need it on a daily basis, so I’m definitely not dependent on it.

Not an expert on that, but I could imagine that thinning down liquid medication is also a way to get an exact dose. Depending on the drug there have to be adjustments if it is soluble in water or you have to thin it down with an oil base or alcohol base. It makes dosing easier and gets a preciser measurement with a syringe. Is that a way it could work, or do I have a wrong idea?

Can you talk about HOW to talk to your doctor about dosing? I am INCREDIBLY sensitive to meds, prescribed or recreational, I guess I am a slow metabolizer. I have had more than one disagreement with my psychiatrist about this very fact. It doesn't matter if it is tylenol for joint pain or stattera for attention, I am SENSITIVE. but I get treated like I am being resistant or oppositional and I feel coerced into taking meds that are too high and titrating too fast. I have to show up sick as a dog to be believed. I live in a small market so getting a second opinion is not an option unless I can afford to drive 4 hours to another market and they are scheduled out 8 months+ (an element of life in Montana people don't get from TV). How can I build a better relationship with my only medical option and be heard so I receive the help I need?

I have experience with the recreational use of LSD and in those quantities it had a good effect on me. I’ve found that micro dosing any psychedelic medication felt quite recreational. Recreational in the sense that I feel as though I shouldn’t participate in everyday occurrences (let’s say…heavy machinery lol) and that this instance of what I’m experiencing needs to be counteracted with alcohol. For context I’m on 70mg (max dose) Vyvanse and physiologically plough through its bioavailability, suggesting I’ve got quite active CYP2D6 activity. Meaning what I’m experiencing for the most part isn’t a pharmacokinetic subjectivity and is therefore a monoamine incompatibility.

Breaking the tablet in pieces or taking a few of the mini pills in a capsule was the only way I could take zoloft or effexor. I tried taking the smallest dose, and it made my so sick I couldn't continue so I wasn't going to get any benefits. Taking 1 or 2 of those mini pills inside the effexor made it manageable and even though it took longer, I was eventually able to take the full dose and get the benefits. I did the same when it was time to come off the effexor as I would get brain bees.

We tried 3 types of SSRI, Clonidine and Intuniv but nothing really help him until a psychiatrist oversee let him try 10 mg of Propranolol. I view a recreational psychedelic dose as an overdose. Tripping is its side-effects. Therapeutic, yes, beneficial, yes, non-toxic, yes, still an overdose. That is why a normal dose of other would fall in the category of a microdose as is. That means a microdose of psychedelics can probably qualify as a normal, therapeutic dose, IMO.

I am depressed (I don't believe I *have* depression though) and I have ADHD. I have *serious* problems with anti-depressants, and pretty much anything that works in a similar fashion (apparently there's an ADHD medication that creates the same nightmare experience for me), but psychiatric doctors rarely believe me, and still pressure me into taking drugs that I have years of horrible, dangerous experiences with. Am I the only person who has this problem? I'm guessing these are mostly reuptake inhibitor drugs, and all of them cause me intense despair, helplessness, and rage. I want to do horrible things to myself to stop the overwhelming, intense, and emotionally crushing feelings. Why do my doctors risk this, even after I tell them these types of drugs will break me, and make me more likely to unalive myself? Why do they seem incredulous? Am I the only person who is absolutely destroyed by these drugs? Am I an anomaly? Am I wrong? Am I imagining this? Have I created this in my head? Why would a doctor deliberately put me through that kind of hell?
@pbbbfft
@pbbbfft 10 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear that. But the rage and intense overwhelmed feeling might be because you might be bipolar. ADHD meds and anti-depressants, when not controlled, can push one into a hypomanic state. One symptom of hypomania is extreme irritability, leading to extra sensitivity, then eventually overwhelmed. I suggest that if you can, change your psychiatrist. They should be taking how you respond to the meds into account so you can switch meds until you find the mix that works

If your magnesium comes as liquid drops, then either there's preservative, which might be causing the bad reaction. Or without preservative, then the water would get contaminated, and then it would make you really sick. I take 4.0 g Epsom salts daily, I'd recommend starting at 0.5 g, and increasing until you start to notice a laxative effect, then reduce by 0.5 g. Fruit juice with pineapple really covers up the taste. Since starting, I found I have better pain control, and fewer migraines. My depression is better than it was before starting Epsom salts to increase my Magnesium.

Still, I'm curious about what form your microdosed magnesium comes in. As there's various magnesium salts and formulations. Do you have the product name and manufacturer? I'm asking because I do compounding. Making capsules, nasal spray, but the most complicated one, is compounding solutions for IV use. As sterile solutions have to used within 4 hours of opening. And the open container needs to be protected from the dust in air, as that contains bacteria, virus, mould spores.

I have been on so meds that never worked and it changed my life in such a horrible way I would recommend never taking them to anyone. They are full of fluoride as filler which is horrible for you and has been linked to low iq with babies in women who are pregnant . It’s all horrible for you. You may not know this to people who think they need meds like if your bi polar or Schizophrenia that changing your diet is the very first thing you need to do. Unfortunately stop eating anything sugar , processed and made with gluten maybe even dairy. If you can try this for yourself any amount of time I’m positive you will feel much better and some people it takes care of all symptoms. Please try the ketogenic type diet for at least a month and see how it affects you only instead of negative effects from medication you wil only have positive effects. You can’t cheat though. You gotta stick it out. One slip up will set you back. But fruit is ok and if you put heavy cream on it it is just as good as ice cream. Then after you get the sugar first then processed food altogether then dairy for some but gluten and sugar we can’t eat. It’s toxic to most folks with symptoms like depression and Schizophrenia. It’s hard but we’ll worth it
