Microfreak Chord Oscillator is Awesome!
Today we're taking a look at the chord oscillator type on the Microfreak! The chord oscillator often gets overlooked, including by myself, which is a real shame because it's awesome! While the wave knob changes the type of chord playing, the timbre and shape knobs modulate the inversion/transposition and waveform shape respectively. This means that we can create some very interesting sounds simply by modulating the two knobs! If you have any other modulation ideas for the chord oscillator, let me know! Enjoy the video :)

The LFO is bipolar, so when you were showing the LFO controlling the inversions you had a plateau at the bottom of the cycle where the LFO went below zero on the knob. If you want a smooth transition all the way through, set the amount of the LFO in the matrix to the same number as your initial Timber knob. That way the bottom of the LFO brings you to exactly zero and you start climbing back up again immediately. Just a tip if anyone besides me found the plateau disconcerting.

I love that it fades through the inversions rather than just stepping. Using that in poly mode with the chord set to octaves sounds great.

A 6/9 chord refers to the 6th (replacing the Major 7th) and 9th scale degree. In the key of C it would be the notes : C-E-G-A-D.

Paraphonic mode is useful when you are set to Octave chord type. Since the waveforms (SHAPE parameter) for this oscillator include some organ waves, this is one of the best oscillators for making an easy organ patch.

The "69" chord is actually 6/9. As an example, a C6/9 would be C E G A D, but often the G is omitted.

In the 1970s, the "69 chord" was a maj7. Now it's a bunch of m9 in a neo-soul progression.

can you activate the arpegiator in combination with the chord osc? I wonder if that would let you play sick arpeg chords going up and down the chords...

Cool just realized that I have the oscillator too since in my modular box I have a Mutable Instrument Plaits. So I can rewatch your microfreak content. I do find the sounds of this module and also of the microfreak a bit plastic to my tastes.

Very good. According to you how does this compare to the Model Cycles?
@FreeBeat
@FreeBeat 2 года назад
I think they're only similar in that you control the chord shape and the inversion as parameters. On the Cycles, you have very limited control over the actual sound, but you have the incredibly powerful sequencer to aid your music. On the Microfreak, it's more about the control you have over the sound. The digital patch bay basically gives you endless ways to change it. Thanks for watching!

Can you play chords normally or does "paraphony" mean you can't? As in, can I play chords by sending it MIDI? I'm confused.
@FreeBeat
@FreeBeat Год назад
You can! This chord oscillator is a completely different part of the machine. You can play up to 4 notes at once as long as the parphony button is lit up. Paraphonic just means that all of those notes share the same filter and envelope :)

Here’s what I don’t get about this feature: how often do you use only major or only minor in a melody? It’s always a combo so this seems limiting in that you can’t play a melody with both major and minor chords in it, right? Am I missing something?
