Thank you for your review! We will have more in stock in a few months, I've starting working on the next batch. We'll also be adding more background info about the kit on our website, and coming out with new products (including a tiny synth this year). -David, MicroKits Inventor

I am very impressed with the direction you company is going with these kits. All of the stem kits I have seen have been too dumbed down. You seem to be following a good middle ground be proving step by step instructions without hiding how things work. I've been looking for kits that let the child hold a transistor or a capacitor in their hands. They are selling toys. You are selling an experience.

These Microkits remind me of the old Radio Shack electronic kits you could buy back in the 70's, or even the Heathkit project days. Great stuff.

Great kit! I love building "musical" kits for my friends kids. Nothing says payback for that prank they played on you than a high volume music-making kit with extra batteries for their 8 year old!

Silly but neat little kit. The best part was hearing Dogly in the background. Though it's always better to see him.

I think this kit has just the right balance of complexity and fun for tweens and teens. This isn't a 'learning electronics' kit as much as it is a 'get comfortable with electronics' kit. In the Arduino classes I teach it takes a while for students to understand how to wire a breadboard. Yes I agree that the kit maker would be wise to have a 'going further' link to a more detailed explanation on his website. Looking at his About page it looks like this was a Covid startup of 1000 kits. I wonder if he is going to do another run or maybe he went back to work for the toy company?

Yes I'll be doing another run. It takes a few months to get all the parts together, and I sold out faster than I expected this December. But I'm hoping to stay in stock moving forward. And yes, the theremin kit is designed as a one or two hour learning experience where total beginners can go from zero to having their own hand built circuit. It's to start to build confidence and familiarity with electronics. I have plans to extend the learning, that I'm working on. -David, MicroKits inventor

Ah man, reminds me of the good old days of the Archer P-Box kits, along with the more in depth Heath Kits. Still have one of those around I found at a yard sale. Speaking of where I used to get my Archer kits, have you seen Radio Shack's web store lately? They used to have a Theremin, but I don't see it now. They do have the InventrKits Adventure Kit: 30 Days Lost In Space. Looks to be a lot of fun. At least there's a remnant of the past there. Thanks Paul, and stay well.

Somebody already beat me to it, but the oscilloscope traces would be cool. Not sure what this project costs, but Elenco makes a 50 in 1 that looks pretty cool for 25 bucks. When I was a kid I got 1 from radio shack and I spent hours and hours making little circuits.

I'd like to see the oscilloscope traces of the 556 outputs as you bring your hands close to the antennas. I think it would be cool to see how they change with your hand movements.
@buildmicrokits
@buildmicrokits 2 года назад
The change is very tiny, and it looks like there is no change if you are near the trigger point. But, if you move the scope a few dozen cycles away from the trigger point, you can start to see the signal shift as the frequency slightly changes! -David, MicroKits inventor

Great review Paul 👌 and a fantastic kit. The creators could take it one step further and have a QR or link in the booklet to explain how the circuit works with an animation. We’ll done anyway 👍

Wow...I truly am an old goat! When I went to electronics school in the late 80's, the breadboards were not user friendly, as they are today. Also back then, we did not need microscopes, to see the components. Sonny Jim, we have to evolve...to be relevant these days!

My guess for the chips was a 555 and some form of audio amp maybe LM386. I was half right!

This was a pretty cool kit! I was wondering, since Radio Shack and most of the mom and pop electronics shops are gone, where are good places to find components, apart from online? Are there some places that are nbetter than others to look for parts to scavenge, especially parts with smaller values for prototyping, building and repairing old (and even new) synths, effects, drum machines, etc? How about for things like mixers, preamps and amplifiers? Apart from Mouser, can you suggest where one might find something like a prototyping kit with assortments of caps, resistors, diodes, etc, for experimenting with varying values?

I tried looking up Theramins but all the schematics were too complicated. I can figure out this one except the odd pic12f chip. Are there any good designs with minimal transistors and maybe just op-amps or 555 ICs? Does your hand need to grounded for it to work? Or can a "floating" object change capacatence(sp) as well? P.S. Does the the Navy decal mean you were in the Navy? If so then thanks for helping defend America.
