Hi Matthew, this worked for a few days but then it came back on again. I followed all the steps in this video including turning of "microsoft managed". Any help to turn it off permanently would be appreciated.

Thank you very much. Disabling security defaults deactivates other security options as well and lowers your security score a lot. So i find doing it this way is much more helpful. Searched a lot on internet, didnt find what i was looking for util i found your video. Great content.

Finally! Some instructions that make sense and don't lead to a non-existent location (looking right at you Microsoft). The forced authenticator causes no end of issues for many of our end users and Microsoft really make it difficult to disable. Hopefully it will do the trick.

Yes I would love to know how to turn this off for specific users too. So to be able to turn it off for students in my school but not teachers or admin staff.

Thank you. If you depend on this authenticator, how long will it be before Microsoft makes it like the office suite? I recently migrated to Libre Office to avoid the ransomware-like edict of paying Microsoft to access my data files. I think Linux is next. Decades ago, it seems I remember Bill Gates saying that it was unnatural for a software company to become huge; oh the irony.

Unfortuantely nobody knows. Microsoft can make these changes mandatory at anytime.

Very helpful, I've completed your full instruction. However when I open my email, MS Authenticator pops up. When I delete the screen Outlook opens, but it only displays past messages, and I can't send anything from my account. Do you have any ideas how to fix this? Thanks again!

Hi, How long roughly did you give it after making the change? Sometimes as mentioend in other comment replies it can take up to a few hours sometimes going up to 48 hours to apply the change fully in M365. It might be worth also going into Entra and resetting the authentication methods again. If the issue still persists, feel free to let me know.

You can add alternative methods for authentication to the account such as alternate email, phone number or OTP.

So this worked a while ago but today I am trying to set up a new PC for a client and despite doing all this I am having the authenticator shoved down my throat. Logging in to Windows it wants to use Windows Hello (which is fine) but it won't let me do it without the authenticator. Am I missing something?

The best and fastest way is: Identity / Overview / Properties/ all the way down, option, Manage security defaults, Disabled.

I can confirm this is also another way of doing it, however I have had reports from other Microsoft 365 admins that the security defaults sometimes get's switched back on by Microsoft.

what if i can't even sign in because the authentication app won't show me the authentication codes?

I would suggest removing the account from your authenticator app and then re-adding it back if possible. If you are locked out of your administrator account then you would need to contact MS to sort this out.
