It's not a replacement for Windows, unfortunately, and the learning curve and lack of support for full GUI and Steam and needed Windows programs makes Lunux distros pointless. Apple is worse and proprietary and overpriced. After end of life for Windows 10, you can pay a fee for three years, but why? Windows 11 version 23H2 and above uses artificial intelligence. That's the worst danger. This is wrong!

@@ernies8828 The way I see it, I can either run a two pc setup, keep my old windows 7 and use linux both for work and as my internet gate, or I can buy a bigger pc and use that to either emulate one or switch between the two. That said, I know enough people who do not use WIndows period.

@@ernies8828 windows is pointless. it's so much more buggy than linux it's actually laughable -- and the different code of paint they put on it every half a decade is unfathomable. the latest edition of windows uses context menu styles from the past ~ten editions. a classic meme by this day and age but it's still nuts. linux has almost everything and more you will ever need. the only reason you might need windows is minor programs that simply won't run (yet) on linux, a recent but rare example of mine being the tp-link powerline program which i didn't end up needing to begin with, or the big programs for which there mostly are replacements. can't use adobe's photoshop? there's gimp, and it's multi-platform. programmers, sound designers, artists of all kind, basic browser users and others are all using linux today as their main os. and good for them. windows is slowly dying, and by golly with this rhythm we'll see that unix flag hoisted by the end of the next decade _guaranteed._

I'm personally very bullish on AI, but the feature of Copilot constantly taking screenshots so it can recall what you were doing at any point is not something I would want. There are serious privacy concerns there. They promise it's entirely local, but I don't want that information to get stored at all. I don't really care if it's local. If they change it so I can voluntarily show Copilot my screen only when I want it to before disabling it again, I'll be a bit more okay with that, but looking at the direction Microsoft is headed I don't really have high hopes.

I keep telling people the same thing is happening on macs. Its ability to track your mouse through multiple computers and the screen sharing it does, add to its accessibility options, there is a full blown keylogger built into the system, and with AI, it could take screen shots of your screen and analyze them to know what is happening, this data is turned to text and could be sent in very small packets on the internet. With AI, they don't even have to hide it anymore.

Been converting all the PC's in my house this week (05/2024). My only glitch was with a Windows software created SSD Raid Array. I thought Linux should leave it alone, but I'm guessing the config lived in the UEFI setup or Windows Boot Manager and it got lost. Oh well. I formatted and mounted both 1 Terabyte drives under linux. On another note, everything under Linux Steam just runs. Now I have 3 Terabytes to load up with my games. LOL - Linux Mint is amazing. I did this because Copilot was invading all my PC's and I'm sick of fixing my machines after "Patch Day" every month. I'm done. And I couldn't be happier.

The nice thing about Linux, is you can customise it to work they way you want. So if you want to make the transition easier for yourself, you can use a desktop that looks and feels like Windows. There are distros which do just that. However, you also want a well supported distro, so if you have any problems, you can find the help you need. Ubuntu is the best for that, although it's default UI is not very Windows like. KDE is a better UI for Windows users, and there is a Ubuntu distro, which enables it as default. It's called kubuntu. I have been Windows free for 15 years. No way am I going to be a slave to Microsoft again.

I am watching this very closely, because of how this could impact the lives of people with disabilities in a positive way. You can’t have complete privacy with accessibility. You can have a degree of privacy, yes, but not complete privacy. For example, the screen readers need access to your clipboard to read things in the first place. Now do I have concerns? Of course. There are genuine implications for things like privacy and tracking. I’m not ignorant to these possibilities, but at the same time, without this technology, barriers would not be broken. Speaking personally I don’t know where I’d be without my iPhone. Yes it probably spies on me. However it allows me to more easily get access to on demand transport, news, shopping, things that before the smartphone were a lot more difficult to do (especially transportation because cabs aren’t always reliable and paratransit in some areas leaves much to be desired). So I see it as potential for both good and evil, and I try hard to focus on the good.

To my understanding, the screen recording nonsense is directly tied to the special AI chip in the new Surface Pro's and Surface Laptops and not something that will be apart of Windows 11 for general PC's but I could be wrong. Not that it makes it any better mind you. But, there is an opt out, which should be an opt in but why would huge corporations do that. For now, as I continue to test Linux Mint, I'm using O&O shutup10, still on Windows 10 controlled by a domain controller, and so far so good. Before O&O shutup10 I was constantly "recommended" Copilot to be installed via my search box start menu. I'm starting to realize M$ doesn't understand how no means no. Been in IT for 27 years and glad I retired early. I want no part in Windows AI, spyware, user data nightmare on the corporate level. And I can tell you one thing for certain, out of all the companies I've ever worked for in an IT capacity, there isn't a single one that would be willing to move to Linux. This should not only scare the hell out of businesses but employees equally as much. Just a shame Linux is behind Windows in creature comforts and things "just working" right out of the box. Just as an example, I have a laser cutter/engraver with a single PC only using the onboard HDMI port, no GPU installed. It has 3 jobs to perform, website viewing, Lightburn to control the laser, and my thermal shipping label printer. First 2 are easy as web browsers are the same in Linux and Lightburn has a Linux version. My thermal label printer though, I spent 2 hours trying to figure out a suitable driver to make it work and I had to force it to fit a specific size in the browser print window or it fails to print everything. I have zero issues in Windows. That's just for a simple workstation that only does 3 things. Gaming, video editing, photoshop, file sharing, not as easy on Linux as it is in Windows. Not to mention replacing my domain controller that has a bunch of group policies so all my PC's have the same mappings, same DNS settings, same available printers, same security, same Windows bloat removed, and so on. Granted, wouldn't need a couple of those settings with Linux but it won't be as simple to setup. Hell, even you struggled to just wipe your Windows partitions. Even Windows cmd using diskpart > list disk > select disk # > clean and the partition is gone. Easy. Sucks M$ is going off the deep end.

The Xbox subsystem already runs at a higher permission level than admin and can ensure you don't have rights to access any of the game files it downloads. You can't even manually delete them without the Xbox app letting you. That's where my head is. What an Orwellian mess... Remember when Micro$oft actually protected your privacy? I installed windows XP just for a laugh and was surprised at how relaxed I felt . It was like going home. The machine actually did what I wanted it to and nothing else. Even Win 7 feels better than anything M$ has crapped out lately. If you take the right precautions, the older OS's still can be reasonably secured, but that's the difference between being able to work ON your machine and working AT your machine. I bet there aren't many people in this world today that can even tell you what an IRQ line is :)

I really think MS dropped the ball massively when they made w11 co-pilot a standard, rather than opt-in experimental, feature. I made the permanent jump to linux when my conputer told me, rather rudely, that I needed to upgrade to win11 but my hardware wasn't sufficiently new. i'm only minutes into the video but what you said about minecraft breaks me. minecraft represented everything triple-a games weren't. and ever since microsoft bought minecraft it just wants to turn it into any other dumbed-down profitable game. i mean i understand microsoft has its fair share of challenge covering the expenses somehow... i just wish they didn't acquire minecraft in the first place to slowly destroy it. besides, i don't like the MSA, and i thought it'd be nice for us to... not have to agree with MSA to play minecraft? but yeah. that's something i never thought i needed to clarify. i also find it annoying how microsoft loves to push their one-products - onedrive, onenote - yet put in so little effort to make them live up to their names: onedrive gets to irreversibly delete your data if you don't log in for as short as a year (not unless you pay them... you're not getting anything back if you didn't), and onenote sync can fail so badly (there was one case i read where onenote denied the very owner from accessing their own notes) onenote starts to delete LOCAL COPIES OF YOUR NOTES. microsoft's "free" service can feel so bizarrely untrusting and uncaring of its own users (surely they look fabulous when things go right, but when things go wrong... then you're really on your own), yet all microsoft cares is to get more and more people to use them..... i can't be the only one hating that they do this, right...

The thing that really makes me mad is thinking about how much wasted potential there is in every facet of the modern world. Imagine if companies weren't harvesting and selling our data, and a program like Recall really was only local, and we really could trust Microsoft. It would be revolutionary and helpful in so many ways for so many people. Imagine if Facebook were really just used to share pictures and chat with family in a simple interface. Imagine if reddit weren't run by a capitalistic tool and remained a free place for communities to come together and talk about shared interests with no ulterior motives. Imagine if Microsoft spent developer time improving Windows and adding features that people wanted instead of harvesting all our data and serving ads to us. You could extend this out further into other areas, like healthcare. Imagine if (in the US) Washington wasn't run by lobbyists and the government actually worked for the people instead of the corporations. Imagine healthcare for all without multi billion dollar industry middlemen taking their cut and letting the 99% pick up the pieces. Most of all of this boils down to late stage capitalism. It's all just so depressing when you think about where we are and where we could be as a species.
