I believe the space shuttle is technically the fastest since it is (or was I suppose) capable of aerodynamic flight and is rocket powered on the way up.

Oddly enough, that record is being held by "X-15A-2", which achieved 4,520 mph/Mach 6.7 at FL350. This is NOT the SR-71 or the YF-12 (two different aircraft with the same basic design.) The SR-72 does hold the record for "Fastest Aircraft, Unmanned and Jet Powered". I don't know if this means all aircraft that is unmanned OR jet powered, or if it's unmanned AND jet powered. The record was set on Dec 22, 1964, and only lists the theoretical top speed above Mach 3 at FL790. Sr71 goes mach 3 not mach 2.6 so it goes more like 2500 knots
