Phenomenal video Steve, appreciate you taking the time to do this. I think it's clear looking at the tin, that, at least in this alpha version, the world terrain DEM hasn't changed, I was hoping for more accuracy, measured in cm rather than m. At places where this is achieved, such as the Grand Canyon, the differences are emphatic. The lighting and 3D ground details are massively upgraded however. As someone primarily interested in flying to places and walking around in VR I can't go over how much better the ground details are. I love the trees, beaches, river banks etc. I think it's going to be easily worth £70 and will get better and better over time.

I pre-ordered 2020 and I pre-ordered 2024. I will continue to support Asobo no matter what direction they go with flight simulation. I think a lot of us OG simmers forget the time when Aces Game Studio came to an end and FSX died. Then the pursuing struggle to work out the issues with P3D and hoping for something new. Asobo was a breath of fresh air and forever changed the landscape of flight simulation. They brought me 4 great years of pleasure with their software and this hobby, so I have faith they will continue to push the bar. Cheers!

Not sure why you guys are saying nothing will change before release, so what you are saying all the missing content will also be missing during full release? Yeah sure, it does not make sense, but anyway typical flight simulator community negative mentality. This was CLEARLY stated as a tech alpha, meaning they are testing the technical back end side of things. This was NOT a content or functional test alpha, so almost all new content was deliberately excluded.

Not sure what you're talking about with regards to the visual fidelity. Images are sharper, render distance is greater, colours are more complex, reflections are better. Should have atleast uploaded in 1440p, I think the differences would have been more obvious. Also, you said it wouldn't be fair to compare frames per second, then you immediately compared them?

The interesting things here for me were the trees and especially the water transparency at the shore - that was night and day different. I'd like to have seen a side-by-side looking at night lighting. On other streams the road traffic at night looks so much better with way more realistic head and tail lights. Still somewhat weird driving but again, the lighting engine makes a huge difference. As an example of "hang on it's tech alpha" - other streams I watched showed weather. My biggest gripe in 2020 is rain appearing to be inside the windshield or on a HUD even. I *believe* that is addressed in the new render engine but someone said that the 172 did not have water effects added yet so actually rain was not visible at all on the windshield. This is a useful video but clearly what was pushed out this weekend is a cut-down version so nowhere near definitive. The recent MS SDK stream made clear that for a plane to benefit from the new features these is a significant bit of work required by devs and that was confirmed by all the streamers dropping existing planes into the alpha's community folder. They appeared and sorta kinda worked but not really.... Let's be honest - we're all going to buy it whatever whining we do now :-)

RECOMMENDATION: The majority of humanity, besides being right-handed, also has a dominant right eye. Therefore, if you want to make it easier to view comparative content, the new content should be on the right side of the screen and not the left. Unless you want to make the comparison more difficult so that people looking back give you more video interactions, which will then be subtracted in the future because they will see other people's comparisons before going back to yours, looking to the left and having the left eye vision off the screen. Do what you want, but the recommendation is very legitimate...

Thanks Steve, did you upgrade the DLSS from v2.4 to 3.7 for this? I felt the performance was vastly better. Virtually no stutters, crisper visually. The Super Hornet model seems more weighty, it is not supersonic in dry thrust in real life like this is. I have flown backseat in a real classic Hornet and got to fly the trip, it's too pitchy on takeoff, flaperons are all wrong but roll rate isn't far off. I did alpha and beta on 2020, this is better at the equivalent point.

Are you at all concerned by the fact that VR has apparently been viewed as not being "essential enough" to be included in the Alpha and by the fact that it appears to have been easy enough for MS/Asobo to exclude it? To me, that makes it look like VR is still not an integral part of MSFS.
@arcrides6841

MSFS 2020 gives me motion sickness in VR so I only play in 2D. With DCS however VR is incredible and I can play for hours without motion sickness.
@Paul-T
@Paul-T День назад
@@arcrides6841 I'm lucky, in that I've never really suffered from VR sickness, but my son has and his experience appears to suggest that the better the VR performance, the less likely he is to get it. That sounds like it might be what is affecting you too, with DCS usually being a far smoother experience in VR. Hopefully, FS2024 will be closer to the DCS experience.
@arcrides6841
@arcrides6841 День назад
@@Paul-T fps is definitely a huge factor. In this case it's not relevant though as both DCS and MSFS run at 90 fps. Running a 4090 with 13900 and g2 headset. Both butter smooth but there's something not quite right about MSFS. Something about the 3D scaling or the rotational geometry if that makes sense. Can't really describe it.
@Paul-T
@Paul-T 23 часа назад
@@arcrides6841 Maybe that is a symptom of the point I was making in my first post, in that VR doesn't appear to have been built into MSFS, when it appears that it has with DCS? Maybe that concern is not correct however, and you might get a better experience in FS2024. We can but hope. :)
@arcrides6841
@arcrides6841 23 часа назад
@@Paul-T yeah I definitely believe it's due to not being properly built in. I don't mind because for MSFS I prefer the amazing graphics and relaxed atmosphere you get from a 4k screen rather than being in a headset for those long civilian flights. DCS however benefits hugely from being able to look around. Also the depth perception makes things like aircraft carrier landings much easier than with 2D. DCS is far more realistic with regard to physics than MSFS therefore I think it makes sense to keep the realism up by running it in 3D. They've really done it well, it's just too bad DCS graphics aren't very good.

I will also say that the rudder pedals in 2024 are WAY more realistic in my opinion. In 2020 I was not able to keep an aircraft strait on the runway because even a little rudder had a large effect on the plane. In 2024 the rudders seemed much easier to control the aircraft with very small corrective inputs.

I definitely agree that the lighting and colors seem to be better in 2024, which is great. Something else that I hope isn't just my imagination is that 2024 appears to be displaying everything smoother than 2020, so less juttering as you fly. This is a major pain point for me when I fly in VR, since I don't want to reduce graphical settings and I can't seem to get rid of it in 2020.

I dont really think the comparison is doing 2024 justice visually. If you make full use of the updated weather and lighting system, for example, setting up more heaily clouded scenes interspered with light rays and wet conditions after rain, at sunset/sunrise, you are going to see a huge difference visually. I mean, 2020 is very good and particularly I dont think you'll see an enormous difference with the cities but for the landscapes, they've already said they have introduced much higher res satellite imagery plus accurate elevation maps.

Interesting video. After watching others, I don't share the same conclusions as you. You talk about updates here without mentioning the career mode and activities, which will add a lot of content to the game. Also, the comparison on London doesn't do MSFS 2024 justice since there aren't really any updates in that area. I hope the autogen will be implemented next year, though I doubt it. You should try to show us the evolutions across the season, fields, snow, extreme weather effects, to compare it with 2020. That would make the comparison more meaningful in my opinion.

Believe it or not, this talk reminds me of the 'debate' in the summer of fs2020, and xplane 11. I don't see it as a debate. I think you are overvaluing the use of a tech alpha vs a finished product. @@VRFlightSimGuy I don't understand this logic! A fair comparison is what 2024 looks and acts like compared to what we have today in 2020 especially when it's free provided by Asobo themselves, not what 2020 looked like 4 years ago! It's like all those FSX vs X-Plane 11 videos comparing against 10 year old stock scenery instead of with the Ultimate Terrain or Ground Environment scenery of the day, At least the argument there was even though most simmers were using them they were still payware addons. That's not the case here! A comparison with photogrammetry in 2020 would have shown not only the true current state of the Sim, but might have explained the huge performance hit in 2024 (Although I think some of that might be attributed to all the telemetry logging they were doing during the test period!)

@@tf51d PG is not working in the alpha so its perfectly logical to do a comparison with it switched off in 2020 so we can judge the differences without getting influenced by the more realistic detail that PG provides. Its almost like gamers forget, don't care or ignore that devs happily sell back the same game again and again, look at the F1 games, MotoGP games, Forza games...... Each to their own for sure but people are kidding themselves...

FSX to FS2020 had to be that much of a leap. By 2020 FSX was 14 years old. We're talking about a 4 year difference. Compare FS2000 to FS2004. That's a fairer comparison. Also the difference is hopefully going to be loading times and a lack of stuttering as we won't be CPU bound by the main thread. In the first scene the resolution was noticeably higher and the graphics smoother. That to me is a significant improvement.

Two things bother me. Firstly, this is an Alpha, with the finished product only weeks from launch?! 😲 Secondly, all this extra eye candy such as more detailed trees, clouds and shadows means a helluva lot more information for the rig to process meaning that the full effects are going to be unavailable to anyone without a top end rig. Even then they are going to kill frame rates to the extent of being impractical for day-to-day simming 😔
