So just a quick update: The tiling was caused my MSFS rolling cache being turned on. I haven't had it on in over a year but apparently MS decided that I needed to have it on again after the latest update. I disabled it and tested again and the tiling went away.

I'm glad you caught this Overkill. I was going to protest in defense of this mod LOL. I've been using this for quite a while now, and I see no performance penalty either I might add. I don't use MSFS's rolling cache at all with any map. I use high LOD in the Mod along with it's own cache. If i want to use default maps, I simply do not start the mod. Also worth mentioning, the mod gives you the option to use the updated Bing maps as well. I love this mod, and whoever comments, that its not worth the effort to use this mod, is missing out. I use it for every flight.

Yes, delete and turn off the sims rolling cache, turn on the mod's cache in options and then start the mod before starting the flight sim. Doing that should result in no tiles being swapped in like you see on the video. I know I don't see that effect at all. I personally love this mod and depending where you are in the world it provides much more detail, also no green roads either! As above: The latest version also allows you to use the latest Bing maps too if you prefer that, rather than the old version so less 10 year old tiles...

I think X Plane missed out on an opportunity to equal the playing field with msfs. They should've teamed up with Google on the upcoming version of X Plane.

Good attempt here, I haven't tried this, but was keen to see your thoughts. I think this deserves another video with rolling cache off & more comparisons in different regions, between stock Bing, Google & Bing Latest. Maybe PNG, Africa, NZ, Europe? Appreciate that's a lot of effort, but this initial look finds me wanting more. Keep up the good work, much appreciated!

For me the biggest positive of the Google maps is roads are textured and not the messy look with the Bing maps. If it's not a major road in a major area it's just an unpaved space but not an actual paved road. Hopefully in the future when they fix the major issues they can take care of the smaller ones.

The benefits are very dependant on where you're flying. If you're flying in Europe there can be a 10 year difference between bing and google imagery. Also it does not change the buildings, so if you're constantly flying around over a large city then you won't really notice a whole lot.

Man I just discovered your channel and love the way you explain concepts. I am a noob in msf2020 and even tho I love flying (I am more focused on DCS atm) I would love going into a more professional way of planning and executing flights in msf. Could you consider doing a guide on how you plan your flight path (I saw it in one of your other videos), how that goes with fshud and how it all comes together with neofly?. I bought the game when it came out but I have never been more excited to jump back into it when I saw you using all that in your differents add ons. But I don't understand where to start. Keep up the great work !

Great util, but do watch the two additions to your PC's Hosts file ( located under C:\Windoes\system\drivers\etc) As not removing these entries will cause MSFS2020 to crash when starting the sim. if you want to go back to then using standard Bing scenary.

After a lot of testing I've found that, for me, the 'Bing (Latest)' choice is even better than the Google choice in the mod.

I thought this was the majority consensus. Buildings and other objects were designed with Bing Maps as the basis...and some objects, roads etc didn't render quite right or not at all in Google Maps. Unless this changed and is just a ground layer/mesh layer...I haven't tried it.

@@leonardolima388 Bing (Latest) in the mod with High LOD option (also in the mod) enabled. Colors and resolution look good and it doesn't have the color filter that makes certain roads, etc. very green that the default MSFS map has.

I have noticed that it depends on the area as to which is better. For example flying out of South Lake Tahoe CA and over the high school, with Bing the Football field is present and details are better. While with Google maps the scenery details are less and the location of the football field shows only a depression in the ground. But while flying over Summerville SC, Google maps shows housing developments that while not completely up to date better represent the area, but Bing maps show only forested areas.

I fly almost exclusively with this Mod and use both Google and Bing Latest. The big issue for me as it pertains to immersion breaking is all the different color tiles that exist from the satellite grabbing shots at different times of the day or year. When will we ever see the entire planet mapped out seamlessly?

I have a gaming laptop I'd say between mid to high range. At ULTRA settings its not all as beautiful and life like with the MS2020 settings. Plus I fly mostly outside the United States where not much attention into scenery is placed. Not to mention the overwork it does on my laptop. But what I have noticed after installing this mod and using Arcgis...damn like 1000x much better scenery. Except for clouds being imaged on some mountains, it is FANTASTIC. Moreover, my laptop seem to not be working as much and the fan is not all the time PLUS the temperature decreased during the entirety of time in the sim. This did not happen before it. I love this mod. But like he said, depending on where you are in the world, compounded by what kinda of gaming computer you have will depend if this will work for you or not. For me I give it a thumbs up.

thanks for the video. I am the kind of person if it is not broke dont change it. In the past I have seen some areas that were very different but all in all there is no difference. I do feel that Bing colors are not as bright and green as it could be. I think the color of the sun and how bright it can be needs to be worked on. But all in all everything is fine with bing. Only complaint is cars on the roads. I wish they would make them better and more realistic. But in the end does it matter.

I'd like to see what the area around KHKS, KJAN, and KMBO look like in Google Maps. Currently, there are no hangers at these airports, except KJAN, and there are tons of apartment complexes, and a new hotel, which are not in the stock photogrametry, as that's 15 years out of date. Thanks

Noticed with Google mod flying in W-Canada / Alaska, with 'Live WX' at 1,500', nearly everything on the ground is covered in snow/ice. Turning off 'Live WX' brings back Google sat pics. Have flown 3/4 around world in HPG 135 helicopter and used Google mod most of the time. Colors are more true to real life, roads look more realistic as do mountain ranges.

Unfortunately I could not get this newest version to work with MSFS Steam. The imbedded launch file path tries to look for a file path that does not exist with the installation version of Steam but with the purchased version only. Is there is a work around for this? Thanks for the awesome upload.

I wonder if the tile switching you have in your video are caused by not deleting and recreating the data/rolling cache file when switching between google and bing maps as they can cause a mess to each other if you don’t.

It can also require a reboot of the sim after deleting the rolling cache. Once it gets rolling though it's good

The reason why you see that tiling effect is because you need to disable your rolling cache in data settings and delete your cache. I use google maps now for months, and have only experienced this once, which was when i did not follow those steps. I would really suggest to rectify this in the video, because this is giving a very bad impression to new people that are thinking about using it.

I too had the same problem on several occations, after flying for a longer time. MSFS cache was off and deleted. I saw it with both Mod cache enabled and disabled. My internet speed is a constant 180MBit, so that wasn't the issue. I wonder if google maps is rate limiting the loading speed in some way, after excessive usage.

It would be interesting to know,how much more recent Google maps data is.Last year I ranted on Bing maps for being no more recent than 1992 in my area because of visible evidence of crop stubble burning which ceased after that date.Google doesn't show that,which could mean that its onl;y one year more advanced (1993).But how can we find out????

I think it's very important that people understand that this does not change the buildings from the photogrammetry process. Blackshark AI is a PRE-process Asobo runs and packages with the scenery before they compile it all in to an installation/update file. Buildings are not generated in "real-time" by the AI process. So keep that in mind, changing this scenery to Google will not suddenly add or remove buildings based on the scenery alone. So it's mostly about the colors and detail as you described.

Just a note here. Photogrammetry & Blackshark AI are two completely different things. Photogrammetry are 3D scanned buildings in specific cities. Blackshark AI produces all other buildings across the globe, all the non photogrammetry regions. If you turn off photogrammetry, then all the buildings you see will be Blackshark generated (Custom scenery airports obviously excluded)

What was your setup back when you recorded this? In Jun the 4090 was not out yet, how could you get such smoothness with another card?

I use the enhancement tool all the time when flying GA and have never seen that tiling effect you demonstrated. I assume you deleted the Google cache and turned off rolling cache when swapping to the mod? I also wonder if the fact you spawned into a location and moved rapidly between altitudes (rather than more realistically flying into an area) was the issue. Generally I think it does depend on where in the world you fly and of course the time of year the imagery was captured does impact the colour palette. Flying here in the UK I find the Google colours a lot more natural plus it gets rid of the greeny/grey roads.

@@flight_planes8540 Still quite cold this time of the year.😁 The sea itself not much difference, just flying around the Cornish coast I do notice with Google that you do get a reddish tinge to the cliffs and shoreline that you don't get with Bing. That is with the drone camera at a couple of hundred feet and I've not seen it elsewhere.

I find I get a slight improvement in performance and stuttering by using the external mod add on caching. Turn off the in game caching and delete the rolling cache and the external cache seems to load better. The difference isn’t drastic but in vr any gain is a good one. So even if you use bing as the source I still use the mod.

Despite having an NVMe SSD, the in game caching caused microstutters for me. Given what I see while installing addons and updates, I wonder if maybe MSFS just completely locks up while loading from the cache? The cache in the addon is really good and works great for me, seeing the stats of what is being loaded is also useful for troubleshooting. You also don't have to worry about clearing it when trying out other map sources, as it seems to cache them independently.

@@fqdn I experienced the same. I have a reproducible stutter right before I flare on every landing. Presumably it’s loading some asset. It doesn’t happen with caching off and doesn’t happen with the map mod caching. My guess is they have poor indexing on the cache and it’s a cpu lookup problem not a disk i/o problem.

I don't know what's going on but anytime I'm using the Google maps as I fly towards an area I can visibility see the Google tiles loading but as a pass that area and look down and behind me I visibility see the Bing maps loading back in.. I don't understand what's happening.. ?? Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've turned off all in game Bing maps and cashe and deleted rolling cashe.. Again not sure what's going on..

Time ago I needed to work with 3D Maya and some height maps for a personal project, capturing partial areas (big) of some places like Arizona canyon, etc, I had the chance to capture these height maps from Bing and Google. All EEUU is covered by Google with high-resolution telemetry, maybe in some places like Alaska, we can lose a bit of depth but... most of the country is a pleasure in terms of resolution/pixels bla bla... I think, in EEUU those differences are not so noticeable if we compare with Europe, Australia, Africa, etc...I can sure you, if you want to visit "flying" the Montserrat rocky mountain in Barcelona (Catalunya), a unique mountain formation in the world, you will appreciate a huge difference between Google and Bing maps... Of course, Google (sometimes) shows you terrain textures and some clouds but...even though that area belongs to Europe, the resolution is still very different, more crisp, detailed, and more accurate than Bing. In resume, I think Google is more adequate for the rest of the world than Bing although with Bing you get the WATER of the coastlines, etc really beautiful, and with Google, you get a "picture" replacement that...it's not so cool...

I can't seem to get Google to load on the horizon. It looks like its the fake default scenery really weird. I find if I tweak my bing colors in Nvidia or even the monitor I can make it resemble Google, and seems to have more colors reds and so forth. Googles a great idea but I'll stick with bing for now

I was highly sceptical of this addon for a long time. Why mess around with something that already looks amazing? I was soooo wrong!! I mainly fly in the UK but was getting fed up of over bright colours, too saturated as well, courtesy of Bing (maybe it should be called Bling?). I've flown in real Cessnas and Pipers many times (I have a PPL) and the ground never looks as bright as Bing portrays. Google colours and detail are significantly better in my opinion. I feel like I have a new simulator now, the difference is that significant. Reading some of the comments here, this may well be a feature of where I fly, but so far I've not been disappointed by the Google imagery. Just wish I'd done it sooner.

Excellent summary and explanation. I think your newly created phrase “immersion breaker” is perfect for the situation and for me immersion is slightly more important than any improvement that Google maps could bring. The default maps are fine

Tried it a few weeks back. But it really chewed up my bandwidth. Not worth it too be honest. Bit off topic but I use a mod called 'Simple Realistic' and make the scenery look more natural and it's on 'Nexus Mods'.

My experience has been about the same, the major difference I saw was highways have a greenish tinge in BING and look gray in the add on.

Try Bing (Latest) in the addon and enable High LOD, most people seem to agree it works the best. ArcGIS sometimes has better colors, but is unfortunately relatively low in resolution.

Maybe you should do this again with the Cache turned off in the "without the mod" bits. I have found that this mod is usually much better (more realistic colours) than running without the mod running.... BUT .... often there are small patches of different colours where the Google data is perhaps missing??? This spoils the mod for me when it happens. It is certainly very important to turn off the MSFS 2020 rolling cache when you run this mod.

I was sold on the Map replacement until i tried to install this thing and trying to get it running., i gave up on it, Deleted it from My PC in hopes of MSFS 2020 buys Google Maps and puts an end to this frustration.

The tiling is due to cached Bing maps overriding the Google. Google maps is far better. It's not just my opinion. Load up both on a Web browser. Detail is far greater in Google. Colour much better as well. But what is really needed is the Google Earth photogrammetry. They are further ahead there as well.

I got the tiling even after I deleted the rolling cache. What else are you supposed to delete before starting this mod apart from the rolling cache?

@@WhiteGinger10000 basically just the rolling cache cleared. I also use the app cache. You can get the tiling no matter what around the edges of photogrammetry since the Bing photogrammetry overrides everything. Other than that I've had it where when we get rolling cache cleared the game still some how kept the immediate area cached. (I think it loads right away if you had the map open from the main menu.) But just fly a little ways away and it should become normal. Other than that. I don't know. It's working well here. It is certainly better than Bing for the majority of places. Especially rural and beaches, and golf courses, and cliff sides, etc

@@bumblewoot Yeah I'll try it again. I did a flight using this map enhancement in a the 737 and the tiling was happening very high up. Did you ever get something like that?

@@WhiteGinger10000 well that will be a bit of a mystery. I've had it happen after clearing the cache, but I would just go to menu, clear the cache, shut down the sim, and shut down the Google thing and relaunch with Google first. You may need to restart the sim right after clearing the cache.

@@bumblewoot I'm going to try to do it by clearing the cache, closing the game, turning on the tool, opening the game, and then turning the cache back on. That should hopefully mitigate any of the weird tiling at higher altitudes.

I find your evaluation a bit one sided in that you rate the mod on low altitude airports. I fly both high and low altitude flights (airlines and put puts). I have a very different take on this mod and don’t fly without it. Airline flying is checkerboard scenery without the mod and much more actual scenery added with the mod. High altitudes of course. After flying around the world VFR with the mod and without, there is a clear winner and that is with the mod. No this is only my opinion however it is formed through many many flights around the world high altitude and low VFR. Just my 2 cents worth Cheers

@OverKill my biggest question which I didn't notice you cover is does the "Google" watermark still exist in the water? I know it was there before and that was a total deal breaker for me as seeing Google in the water everywhere was totally immersion breaking for me. I know that this mod has been improved quite a bit but I don't want to install just to see Google in the water.

June 03, 2024 ...I tried Map Enhancement (finally got it to work nicely), and I must say the Google Server does display higher & better graphics (some areas are correct color, other areas are too green or yellow), but the one thing I did notice is the graphics are mostly in the realm of AUGUST/SEPT displaying burnt/dry up grass & wilted vegetation i.e. trees, I do not believe using this app applies current seasonal graphics. IMO & honestly, it's still a waste of realism in time, but it does make FS2020 better than using BING. Update: June 09, 2024, ...Another thing to mention, when user stops using this app, it will mess up FS2020 cache (yes, even after deleting photogrammetry cache and the Nvidia DX Cache - if your card is a Nvidia), it will require several restarts, because when you start FS2020 without Map Enhancement - aircraft and scenery WILL fall out of the sky and there is a HUGE delay in correcting this (will need another restart) when going back to normal.

Not enough graphical benefit for me, it’s just more shit to unravel when you run into issues and have a nightmare trying to troubleshoot. Addons are what make the experience better but the closer you run the Sim to vanilla settings the easier your life will be.

But this 'addon' is a stand alone app. Nothing goes in your community folder and you can choose to run it or not to run it each time you start the sim.
