Microsoft Teams Wiki Is Dead And What To Do Instead. Big, big news for 2023! Wiki is going! Amazingly, with Microsoft not doing anything to improve Wiki since Team's release back in 2017, it's now decided to kill it off. So stay tuned for all the news on that and my take on it and what Microsoft is replacing it with.

Oh darn! We use two to four wikis per channel! This is really bad news 😢 It was the perfect tool for our business needs. Microsoft had a liitle hidden jewel there. Sad they didn't realize this and promote it's use. Your videos are the only source of information about them. I appreciated your insights and the fact you gave the wiki some exposure. OneNote is nice but it just can't match the accessibility of quick information. Tossing wiki is a big miss for Microsoft. This with the removal of the conversations ability from word,excel etc...Microsoft is removing key tools that made Teams worth using. It's like they forgot the point of Teams entirely. All these losses are slowing us down. OneNote up grades pushing us back to Outlook. WHY?! With conversations and wikis we were done slogging around in our in boxes! If you have influance please ask them to refocus on communication and collaboration! As end users we are shocked at thier disconnect. Who has a need to hand write notes ever and in rainbow ink no less! What are they thinking? Those are considered OneNote upgrades?!
@MeeTime
@MeeTime Год назад
I feel your pain 😊 Comments in Lists, Excel, Word, Ppt going back into email rather than conversations is sub-optimal to be polite, especially when trying to make a change to get people to use Teams. Ditto OneNote, that does not even have modern commenting or the ability to chat about a specific page like wiki had.

Another great Video Gavin, I cant find any reference to this on the Microsoft Roadmap, where can we get more info on this?
@MeeTime
@MeeTime Год назад
Thanks Nic. The roadmap should be the place with all the information but rarely is in practice. This news came out of the blue via an admin center notification, I've not seen it anywhere else and Microsoft have never "pre-announced" it in any other blog that I am aware of

@@Nic_Wood Yeah, seems like a drastic action given the amount of time between them announcing features and then releasing them (Loop pages, anyone?)

This is disappointing. I liked wiki for storing information and procedural information about particular pieces of work on a channel for multiple people to use and indeed add to. I get that One note offers similar functionality but a one note notebook is in someone’s personal notebook and requires someone to share it on teams. What happens if that person leaves the organisation? The notes will go with them and potentially leave the team with nothing? I much preferred the stand alone nature of wiki for this reason!
@MeeTime

Hi Richard. Hopefully good news for you: if you add a new OneNote from Teams tab first, it will live in the Team (SP site associated with the Team) so you won’t have the issue of it residing in an individual’s account 👍

Just tried making a wiki in notes. It sucks. They've managed to make a mediocre feature worse.

Thx for the content! But, would be much nicer to watch and easier to follow, if you just show the screen and yourself in a small window at the screens side

I used to do that but the editing takes longer. It's only me and not my day job. Thanks for the suggestion.

If onenote only opens in the collapsed version, you could include a start 'table of contents' and link to other notes in onenote?

any update on this topic ? Seems like Microsoft doesn't really care about their customers...

Nope - seems strange that MS are going with OneNote tab for channel notes and Loop components for meeting notes... 🤷

My wiki died. Is there any chance to recover its contents? Or are they gone for good? :(
@MeeTime

There should have been a banner warning for a few months. I fear that if it is now gone, you might have lost it, but a check on the Microsoft Forums might have a workaround

Oh No! I use the Wiki (on a Channel Tab) to host a collection of links to various files as a dashboard and not sure that doing this is OneNote is going to be anything like as convenient as Wiki 😫😫. I suppose I would be better off moving these to Lists instead?
@MeeTime
@MeeTime Год назад
Lists would be a good use for this. Simple and straight into your links for people visiting the tab 👍

I also use WiKi for some quick links too and it’s been helpful. I will have to explore the list option as a potential replacement option.

I can't find the export function on my existing Wiki tabs. Is this feature still coming?
@MeeTime

As a general rule of thumb, things come out later than Microsoft announces and rarely earlier. If you cannot see the migration option, it is probably because it is not available yet but I've not seen anything that this plan has been cancelled completely, so keep on the look out 👍

I wonder, if SharePoint Wiki will share the same fait as the SharePoint Wiki is due for a modernization for years now, too.
@MeeTime
@MeeTime Год назад
I would have thought so. There isn't really any functionality that SP Wiki can do that a normal modern page can't. It just confuses end users to have that many overlapping options still available for a simple page creation.

We didn’t find any use case for wiki. It is not flexible tool and not so useful.

It had it's minor uses, but I agree it had bizarre limitations. Not sure why Microsoft ever thought of including it in Teams as default?

I think they will be moving to Loop eventually. The new meeting notes in Teams will be Loop-based

I wouldn't go that far...but hoping they quickly revert to offering Loop as a substitute rather than OneNote (or just fold Loop and OneNote together into one product)

@@MeeTime I get your point, but you also know that he has a point as well. I get it that taking dictation courses is not easy, and not really necessary. It's not like you want to be an actor, or a singer. But there's alternatives that someone like you can implement with not a lot of effort. You could process the sound with a more aggresive de-essing. Then you could slow down the video by just a little bit and the quality of the sound would probably be much improved. If you could perhaps even speak faster and then slow down a bit more, sound would probably be even better, but it's always easier to just focus on the content and then run the entire sound through the proper filters and post it. Thanks for the content!
