Thanks to you, I did a variation on this successfully! I placed a slice of potato I had scored on one side in a container of compost I got from my garden pile. I punched a few holes in the lid, stored the container on the floor of my garage to prevent freezing and waited 3-4 weeks. When the potato started to decompose, I noticed the surface looked slimy. When I checked with a hand lens, I saw the micro worms. Next I scraped the worms off and placed them in some cooked oatmeal. Let them reproduce, then voila! Saved me $12 plus shipping!
Interesting, but it will have to wait, it is already snowing here. :( I wonder if different climates and soil types have different microworms, or possibly none at all? does potting soil or peat moss contain microworms?
I didn't expect this to work, but it did! I buried 5 potato haves partially hallowed out with hole down across my yard (Arkansas) and marked them with white flags, left them for about 6 days, then dumped them into a large jar with oatmeal, yeast, misted with spray bottle. I forgot about them for a couple weeks with a coffee filter lid, and checked expecting nothing, to see it FILLED with micro worms. :D So I'm going to split the mega culture into smaller containers and supplement my betta fry. I red too much microworms causes them not to develop correctly though.
This is an ok video but I could have done without the music it was just awful and very annoying it's just not my kind of music and I understand if others liked it, so please don't beat me up for it.
Can i change the oatmeals with bread slice? I see someone doing it with breads and milk, but i havent oatmeal and milk Dont ask me for buying it btw,im on a crysis now😭 Thanks
Are these TAPE WORMS ? If so then you will be having health problems.... This is not a safe way to get food for fish! Do you even know what type of worms these are.... not just a guess...but know for sure?
This is (as far as I know) the original method for starting a microworm culture (make a hole in a potato and bury it in soil outdoors). It’s mentioned in aquarium books from the mid-20th century. Of course, your job is a lot easier if you can get a starter from someone who is already culturing microworms. But if you can’t, do this.
You told this video is making microworm without using starter and in the video you are using starter........do you have any other video were your making microworm without using starter...
Really cool Video was helpful .. but a request could you show us how to prepare Delphinia the same way to create at home please it would be really useful if possible thank you :)
quinmallory: It is a good question. I thought a lot about that too. As far as I understand, fish parasites can only be brought from other aquariums or those natural rivers and ponds, which are inhabited by wild fish. Terrestrial things should be harmless.
I tried it but instead of oatmeal I used bread and water and it’s been two days until a week all I see is a white fuzz or moldy thing on the bottom is that usual
No, you can't. Because the starter is very stinky and maybe can break down the water parameters... You need to culture it in culture media and then harvest the worm that crawl out from the culture media ... It safer I think ...
yo thanks man you save my betta fry....i don't no where to find microworm starter but after seeing your video i can make my own.. great work Dude keep it up!!
These are not grindals. These will never get bigger than they are shown. Tiny wigglers. Great for fry, tetras and small fish. Grindals look like baby earthworms and are larger
hi, i tried this method. did every process. however when i put the container in a store room, then after 3 days, it has molds. is this failed? should i redo everything? where did i go wrong?
It's a great way to find microworms in nature! but for culturing I prefer porridge only (without yeast) and in full light - I've been keeping them for half a year, very productive and easy.
very interesting, i'm just starting my first tropical tank and of course want to feed my fish the best diet possible. Do you just keep the culture in a tub? Inside or out?
theantinwofish: I'm very sorry for a terribly belated response, I didn't notice your question in time. I keep the culture in the garden (Wales, UK) and use the culturing method described here: www.tropicalfishforums.co.uk/index.php/topic,163402.0.html
Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing. I never knew you could raise these. I have a Betta inside and goldfish outside. I was looking for live foods for them all and found your video. I can't wait to try.
A put my potato in the soil for a week and mines still hard but I don’t know if it works I found in the middle something crawling not worms but very little white and small like dots should I still complete the process?
