Micsig SATO1004 Injector Waveform

Using the Micsig SATO1004 Automotive Scope to look at a fuel injector on a 99 Mazda B2500 2.5L.
In the video, when I execute 3 throttle snaps, the wave form gets pretty wonky.
I think it’s possibly a shorted injector due to the straight up line on the current ramp, and the weak to no voltage spike. I see something very similar in Paul Danner’s (scanner danner) diagnostic book. I am always learning, and always will be.
Put in the comments why you think the waveform looks like that.
I think I’ll either clean, replace, or clean test, then replace them, and test again; so we can see the differences of each on the scope.

The reason why your signal looked so 'wonky" towards the end of the video --- is because when you zoom out so far, it really reduces the resolution. You can see the number at the top (at 18:10) -- it says 2.5 Million samples/ second. But when you zoom out so far--- it goes all the way down to 500 samples/ second.. which is simply not enough resolution to get such a fast signal. This is one of the short comings of the cheaper scopes. If you want that functionality to work like you're showing-- you need to buy the more expensive scopes and not the basic level 1004... This is also how they are able to have so much memory depth. Because they are taking a lot fewer samples per division, which allows you to have a longer capture-- but at a much lower resolution. These Micsig's are only 8 bit vertical resolution vs 12 bit and 14 bit scopes like that pico and a few others. There are levels to scopes-- and to look at the finer details-- you really have to get a 12 bit scope at the very least.... You just demonstrated a limitation of this scope. When you see those very basic shapes and forming a lot of triangles instead of waveforms--- it's because it's simply not sampling fast enough... It's possible that it was auto adjusting the sampling rate-- and you can maybe force it back to that high resolution-- even when you're zoomed out-- but at that point, it's going to fill up your memory very quickly-- because it's sampling 2.5 million times/ sec instead of just 500 times/ second-- that's a HUGE difference and will fill up the memory 5000x faster than the 3.88 hours that you calculated (at the given 500 sa/sec).... Just make sure you're not using the "AUTO" adjust.. so it doesn't change that sample rate for you. Then try to zoom out.. Maybe it can do it; but the auto changed it on you. Sometimes AUTO" will turn on other things too.. like persist, and a few other things... Just use it manually and stop using the presets- then end up hurting you more than anything. and see at (20:50) when you test it again--- it's now at 50k samples/ second.. So the waveform looks decent again when you zoom in. So I guess the lesson I take away from this is only zoom out as far as you need to when making the capture.. because if you start by zooming out too far-- then the resolution just isn't there when you zoom back in. Of course, this is only important for high speed moments like secondary ignition and fuel injectors. etc..

I don't want to pay the money for a pico- but it's really the only one that makes sense.. Every other scope that I found with the same capabilities as the pico-- ends up costing just as much. I'm going to keep researching for now. cheers

Hey, how’s it going outsideworld76? Yeah, my wife laughed at me for that one, lol. I should probably see about getting glasses. I’m finding I’m having to hold my phone further away from me to be able to read stuff. Early morning and late at night is definitely worse. It was pretty late when I made that video. I could hardly read anything on that damn screen, lol. I actually have a newer larger magnifying glass in the little table next to my recliner. Thanks for checking out the channel. Thanks for your video's that you have been uploading on the new MicSig Sato 1004, I currently bought mine just one week ago and have used it in multiple occasions and I have to admit, "I LOVE IT" already, and still so much to learn on this unit, it has so many functions and I learn something new everyday and Im sure many more to come. Im planning on ordering a current clamp within the next week, "which one do u recommend"? I ordered 2 Attenuator's 20:1 and 2 extra Hantek BNC's, I like them better, "longer and more Heavier Duty then the ones that came with the unit. Im subscribed to your channel and waiting for new uploads on this device. Thanks again for the awesome video's.

Hello Jesse. Thanks for subscribing, I always appreciate that. For automotive diagnostics, I use the Pico 20A/60A AC/DC (low amps) current clamp (PP264) (TA018), and the Pico TA019 600 A DC (high amps) current clamp. Both of these work great for automotive use, and have been used by techs for years. These two are the least expensive “high quality” probes. Pico makes newer, but more expensive probes also. I also have one from Micsig, but it runs about $500. You can see it in some of my videos. With that said, I also tinker with other electronics that may need a more advanced current clamp. I would suggest the two pico’s that I mentioned above. I also bought Picos color coded BNC lead set. They weren’t cheap though (maybe close to $200 if I remember correctly). I use them all the time so it was worth it to me. The Micsig ones are just too short for me. Oh yeah, if you can only get one amp clamp to start with; I would probably go with the low amp clamp. You will most likely use it more often than the high amp clamp. I hope this helps. Thanks again for subscribing my friend. Good luck.

Now u got me looking into the Pico BNC Leads lol, and I agree on the micsig leads, My first thought when I opened the box was WTF is this LOL.. I'll be looking into the Low amp clap before the end of the week, since I can see this is one device I'll be using very often . Thanks again. Good day

Hello Christopher. Thanks for the compliment, I definitely appreciate it. I bought my attenuators from Amazon. They are the Hantek brand 20:1 attenuators, and cost $11-$12 a piece. Hello Lambros. Thanks for the question. There is quite a few differences between the ATO1104 (ATO1102) and the new SATO1004. I am going to make a full video showing and explaining the differences. I am going to be busy the next couple of days, butt will make a couple new videos really soon. I will enclose that one in my next release. Nice video! I myself bought one and trying to get around how to use it, I've also noticed the micsig software is also used on topdon, thinktool, launch/x431 and Autel, i don't know if the hardware is the same as the micsig though

How’s it going SuperEmab? I’ll have to think about that. I’m not sure if I want to keep it, so I can still show it in videos in the future, next to newer ones; give/sell it to my brother; or sell it to anyone else. I would recommend, if possible for you, to get the SATO1004. I completely understand if you can’t though. They are less than the Pico, ATS, and SnapOn scopes, but still not super cheap either. I’m just saying if you are even close to being able to get the newer one, I would save some more and do that. I’m only saying this because it’s a pretty damn cool Scope. With that said, The ATO1104 is nice also, and has served me well. I look at them both like iPhones. Even though we really enjoy our present iPhone (or Android), the newer generation model is almost always more advanced, nicer looking, etc. (more expensive); but we don’t “need” it, because our present phone has served us well. If you want, leave your email or whatever contact info here, and I’ll contact you. As soon as I get your contact info, I can delete it from here. I think you can too. I can’t make any promises. I usually hold on to things like that. I enjoy seeing how technology changes over the years. Either way, thanks for stopping by the channel.

Looks good! I have one coming I like how they are oscilloscope and tablet all built in. I think that’s where pico needs to go but would hate to see the price tag on such a device. Thanks for sharing

Hello schammo. Yeah absolutely. I’m really surprised Pico hasn’t done that yet; but you’re right about that, the price would be insane. Unfortunately, they already cost, what? $4.000-$6,000 for their new 4 channel. I may be off on the price. It’s been a little while since I’ve looked at them. Another Automotive scope that I would really like to have is the eSCOPE from ATS (Automotive Test Solutions). It’s a tablet scope as well. Also, unfortunately, the 4 channel starts at about $3,000. You should take a look at it. They are pretty cool scopes. I also would like their scan tool, the eScan. That’s why I think the Micsig is the best one for under $1,000. great video to learning ,micsig automotive setting set up very low sample rate to min noise that why cause wave firm distort when zoom out i believe manual set up some time better than auto & turn off persistent show more better picture enable roll function i wish can get more buffer like pico scope i buy APT-100 pressure transducer test with ato1004 very good wavefirm show up on micsig scope degreed function not as good as pico scope.

Hello wzthonda. Thanks for that explanation. I did not know that until just a few minutes ago.I was just talking to Vaahthstampead about that. He was just explaining it to me. That’s great. This is exactly why I made this channel. So we can all work together and help each other learn to use these things better. So you tried a pressure transducer on the Micsig? I’ve been wanting one for a while. I was just going to get the Pico one, but when I went on their site, it was a few hundred dollars more than it was just last year or so. You said the waveform didn’t look good? I wish I could see it. Also, i would like Micsig to make their own pressure transducer, that works good with their scope. Thanks again for explaining that. It really helps me, and I’m sure other people as well.

Hello Tech28. Thanks for the question. I would recommend try opening the channel menu, and turning on the low pass filter. I almost always do this. It gives a much cleaner waveform. Let me know if this helps.

@@atomsworkshop195 I’ve played around with the filers and I guess it only gets so good due to the sample rate. Hey question for ya, do you know why all of the presets start off on unusual voltage scales? Like I went to start the injector preset and the voltage scale starts at -40V.. what’s with that? It should start at 0V

Yeah, I’m not sure what’s going on with the presets. They’re usually pretty close to where you wanna be, but like you mentioned, sometimes they’re not even close. I’ll use them to get me into the general area, then I make any needed adjustments. I keep hoping that on the next firmware update, they’ll all be on the money, but no luck just yet. You can also use the Auto feature; this usually works pretty good. Sorry for such a late response. I thought I had already responded to your question, but apparently I just read the question, lol.

This scope is portable. It’s an automotive tablet oscilloscope. This works for automotive use, and from what I can find, the best one in its price range. Hope this helps.

Good morning. Nice video. Zooming in that far exceeded the capture resolution. It had to best guess the information between plot points. You might be able to maximize the resolution in your main menu, or adjust your time base for less captures on screen. Sad to say I lost your last reply before I could read it all. Totally my fault. I edited my first post and then saw two separate posts and removed the original. Along with that, went the full reply from you. I wanted to kick myself.

Good morning VashthStampeede. Are you saying the part where I gave it 3 throttle snaps, looked like that because I zoomed in to far? The part where I put on the screen that I think it might be a shorted injector? When I was editing it late last night, early this morning, I looked in my diag book from Paul Danner, and he had an image of a somewhat similar wave form, saying it was a shorted injector. I’ve never seen one look like that before. I just tried clicking on our last comments, and it said something like “comments not found”. That’s alright. I think I’ve done that before, accidentally. I usually try not to delete any of the comments. I want everyone to be able to state their opinions, and what they think. I definitely don’t know it all, and am here to learn. Even if someone is being a know it all asshole, I still leave it there. I have intentionally deleted a couple, just because some people just want to argue and talk trash. I’m not here for that, and neither are the people that visit the channel. At least I think so anyway. That’s why I don’t have FB, twitter, or any of that stuff. I had FB years ago, but couldn’t stand all the bickering back and forth. Grownups acting like children. Delete.

@@atomsworkshop195 Yes, it may not have been showing a shorted injector. The scope places a dot at the time and voltage each time it samples. The more samples per second, the denser the dot pattern. Then, it connects those dots with a line. The line you see appears to curve when the samples are close together. When you zoom in, if the samples are not close enough to maintain the curve effect, you actually see the straight line that was drawn to connect the dots. You either needed a lot more samples per second or to have zoomed in closer before the screen capture. More sample eats more memory, so the programmed setting anticipates what you need to see and lowers the sample rate accordingly to maximize memory usage.

Oh ok, I understand what you’re saying now. So, next time I should either raise my sample rate, or zoom in closer before I capture (stop) the waveform? Yea? I know they beefed up this new scope with 70Mpts sampling rate. So that’s the one I would need to choose? I showed that on one or two of the videos I just made on it, but completely forgot about it while I had it connected to the truck, lol. Also, I didn’t realize that when I zoom out the way I do before I stop the waveform, to analyze it; that it lowers my sample rate. Thanks for that info. I like to zoom out because then you have more time to look at,so I figure that better my chances of finding an error. I just started using a scope when I bought my first Micsig, the ATO1104, a couple years ago. I can get all my waveforms off the car, and I’m getting better at interpreting them (definitely still have plenty more to learn); but as for understanding how to use all the features the scope has, I am still struggling a bit there. Like all the different triggers. There are so many of them, I’m not sure when each one would be useful. I understand the rising and falling edge, and maybe another one, but that’s it. I have almost no idea how to use most of the options in the Math menu’s. With that said, you’re probably wondering why I make my videos. That started because when I was trying to decide whether to buy the ATO or not, there weren’t many videos, going into detail showing all of the menus and options, and what not, or it being connected to different parts of a vehicle. So I figured I might as well do it. That and from all my research, and now experience with it, I know Micsig makes a really good oscilloscope, especially at its price point, so why not share that info with other people, and help people with a lot of questions they might have. In the automotive industry it’s all Pico and Snapon for scopes, and they are pretty damn expensive. Anyway, sorry this was so long. Hey, I really appreciate your comments, and that little bit of knowledge you just dumped on me. That’s what I wanted this channel for. To help each other learn more about using this kind of stuff. Everyone can chime in with good advice and knowledge. Thanks my friend.

@@atomsworkshop195 I always enjoy watching your vids. Super Mario did a great video on setting up the ATO1104 a few months back. That's where I learned about the automatic settings degrading the image resolution. He goes into the menu and maxes the resolution and manually sets up for his captures. He showed that just clicking on the preset tests lowers the settings he just dialed in. Someone I watched said he spoke with people at Micsig and he pronounced it Mike sig. I got to thinking about it and I've come to the conclusion that Micsig is a shortened word for micro signal. The again I might be full of dookie on that.

I’ve wondered if it’s because I always access my RU-vid Studio through my phone rather than laptop. I say that, because I sometimes find comments when on my laptop that don’t show up on my phone.
