I honestly never saw that word that way. When I hear or use mid it just means that: nothing to write home about but not the worst thing out there. But I think people don’t want anything to do with something that is mid is because everything is just too expensive or not worth our time. If you’re going to drop money, then it better be worth your dollar because if it’s not, then why bother? Especially since the price of movie tickets, streaming services, and video games just keep going up and up. You only have so much money so if something isn’t amazing then it really does feel like a waste of money/bad investment.
The definition of mid in social media has also changed people's perception of the word. People automatically assume mid = bad now. Mid doesn't even necessarily mean average or bad. It could just mean a show that is plain good as well, but isn't exactly amazing either. Many people don't understand that though.
My cousin constantly calls me a downer when I see a trailer and I just say something looks "okay" or "yeah looks alright". It's really annoying, I don't think I have to be super hyped or in love with every single movie or game that comes out
People don't take "mid" in a neutral way because it sorta similar to say it's "not worth mentioning", "so average" that people don't care, cause you know good/bad things get attention, but nobody care about the middle ground.
Yeah, that’s mainly his point, that the perception of mid has become distorted in a culture that is only willing to engage with the extremes of 10/10 or 1/10, as he puts it, “either you’re with us or you’re our enemy.” There’s not a middle ground and to a lot of people, “mid” has become one of the biggest insults even though most of the world exists in the “mid” category.
I think it's more of an etymology thing, words like "average" or "bland" or "mediocre" begin to drift to have more and more negative connotation over time due to the way we use the words. Average is 2nd to Above average and barely any better than below average. Mediocrity is often used to describe a boring, dullness. And bland is used to describe something with no flavor or color, so these words become more and more negative as time goes on interpretation-wise.
Mid should mean, well, mid. As in "middle of the road" or average. Instead people are acting as if mid means "This game shot my dog, plowed my wife, raised my kids to hate me, burned my house down, and stabbed me in the stomach."
no. you just assume mid means it's positive, something being "average" is not good. even being slightly better than average is still bad when it comes to media. you won't ever catch me watching a 7/10 show, because I'd rather do literally anything else.
I think it has to be " mid" means something didn't please you, and since you didn't say what,it offended them. Your opinion might clash with there's so today"mid" is a sneek diss 😅 🙃
@@Whatismusic123 but realistically, because all media is subjective, just because a show is rated a 7/10 doesn't mean you wouldn't really enjoy it. the yu-gi-oh movie "the dark side of dimensions" for example, has a 6.9 on imdb, but I really enjoyed it. wasn't a masterpiece by any means, but it was fun and time well spent for me. there are so many 7/10 or lower shows and movies that you could end up really enjoying, but just don't want to even give it a try. you're missing out man.
The combativeness is real. I know my big issue with being combative is that it always feels like everyone else gets to call what I like "bad", but if I do the same I'm being unfair, so it's totally poisoned my ability to communicate some times. And it feels even more unfair to be told that I'm supposed to just be bigger than it, too, when it's so prevalent. But I'm sure everyone probably feels that way. As far as "mid" being supposedly worse than bad, I think somewhere along the way we either collectively decided or allowed ourselves to be convinced that commodities deserved our attention. Like, if someone tells us that we should or shouldn't do something, for some reason we feel compelled to believe that. And we don't really like that or agree with it, but there is this overwhelming push to do it anyway. So when we can convince ourselves that something is bad, we get to trash it and by doing that take back some of the control we lost to this idea that we *must* participate in the consumption. But like you pointed out, someone will find a way to defend even the "bad" things. It seems like the only objective, totally defensible way to trash something is when it isn't memorable. So when it's just plain old average. I think that weird dynamic is what really powers it. We're compelled to participate in consuming and we don't really like that, and trashing things is a form a of protest against a force we don't have a name or face for. Anyway that was my rant on your rant. Thanks for reading.
Mid has always mean to me as "Not worth my time" or average. When everything has to be ground breaking or a new experience, being called "mid" sounds like it underperformed on expectations
Mid would be somewhere between 5/10 - 6.5/10 rating. That's not BAD by any means. It just means "There are plenty of way better games out there, but there's still enjoyment to be had with this game none the less." I swear, it's like now a days if people hear that a game is lower than an 8/10 score, it's automatically trash. This generation is so cooked it hurts.
To quote a comment I saw 2 seconds ago: "Mid is good when the people behind it genuinely put effort into making it and it just wasn't sensational. Thats ok. But when a company purposely puts fewer resources and little effort to make something mediocre when they both have the financial and technical capacity to make it better, and they just didn't to maximize profits, that's not ok."
Saying something was "Okay" or "alright" is the same thing as saying something was "mid". Its not negitive, its exactly what you think it means. Nothing special, not bad, not good.
same can be said about music... its like how people call literally every popular artist "mid" and proceed to be listening to underground indie rock or smth. i used to be exactly like this
I think people call something mid because it's overhyped. I've only ever called something mid when others around me think it's way better. But then again, i don't use that word often.
People treat "mid" like it is something atrociously bad, which is not. People nowdays feel like if they don't love something they feel guilty, so they go the opposite direction and convice themselves that they actually hated it, there's no in between. It's the polarization effect which has been increasing more and more over the years.
The term "mid," which originally just meant "average" or "mediocre," has somehow morphed into something much more negative in these discussions. People use "mid" as if it's synonymous with "terrible," but in reality, something being "mid" isn't bad at all. It's just not exceptional, and that should be okay.
The reason why “mid” turned out this way is purely because of how it was used against cult fandoms. Calling, let’s say, One gets-good-after-80-hours Piece mid in a room of 400-hours-in people will cause violence. A rating of mid is like saying Voldemort’s name in that context.
I feel like this did actually happened and I cannot shake the thought of you pull out of your phone after taking a good piss and then you just get notified by this vid lmao
So to me it sounds like there are a few potential options. 1. People are scared to give their opinion on things so they just go with the majority opinion. 2. People secretly like something but feel like they need to hate it in order to avoid being outcast from their friend group. 3. People just go with the opinion that their favourite content creators have and have no personality of their own. 4. People just simply hate something because they don’t like anything popular and are possibly spiteful that the thing that they like is not as popular as the thing everyone else likes.
It's because everyone only wants and expects the top 1%, and that's in everything; attraction, intelligence, a game, a movie, a book, a person in general. Everything has to be something, and if it doesn't have "aura" or is "peak," it's "mid," which I've seen is now used as bad which makes even less sense and just makes everything worse. Most people who call others (and other things) mid are projecting heavily, it's just sad.
The reason Mid is worst than saying something is bad is because when you describe something as bad people can say you're just a hater but when you say it's Mid it's like you're saying you objectively think it's not good while not being personal
The good thing about Mid's is that there are always some people that gives them a 10/10, so it's worth giving it a chance because you might be one of those people.
I think everyone knows the feeling of consuming media and thinking it’s the best thing ever made only for someone else to tell you it’s mid. That’s how “mid” has turned into “bad”.
I think the mid used today came from people talking about mid weed. For decades people have been talking about “mid weed” or “mids”. With how much super potent and specially grown weed there is now a days mid weed is seen as bad and would be made fun of by some. This could be why the word mid is seen and used how it is
The word mediocre now means bad but actually just means 'mid' in its original meaning. This is a common thing in linguistics where words become exaggerated in their meaning over time. The word vulgar just meant 'of the common people' but now means something disgusting.
This shit started with weed. When "loud" started hitting the streets, they had to call the old stuff mid so people knew the difference. People got used to loud and started acting like mid was trash and unusable. When in reality it's just medicore, middle of the pack, mid.
To me, doing nothing is mid. Games movies and TV shows that are mid are bad. That's because it's supposed to be better than doing nothing, and they're spending millions on resources for it.
I think the main issue is that mid has become synonymous with boring, and there is nothing more excruciating and mind numbing than being bored, thus mid has become the worst rating one can receive
Maybe just me but I have been using "Mid" as an abbreviation of "Mediocre" and all my life I have use "Mediocre" as a derogative, very differently of how I would use "Average"'; while something is "Average" because it didn't quite excel in its own ambit, some other things are "Mediocre" because they didn't even try or they aimed to the safest route, which while not being bad they are also not good.
I remember when the first Venom movie came out people started talking about how being mid is okay and not every movie has to be the best thing ever, cause we become spoiled and take the good stuff for granted. Bad and mid exist to remind us how good the good stuff actually is.
I think it’s a larger symptom of a problem, we have been conditioned to be at the extremes and almost everything you can have an opinion on. Keeps us divided and at our throats
Here's my argument: Mid is seen as such a bad thing because time is invaluable, and there are so many absolutely incredible games that are worth playing over and over and over again like Soulsborne imo. People would rather spend their time on something that's great even if they've already experienced it before instead of playing something they'll likely forget in a year or 2. I am a HUGE Nioh fan for example, and a while back Team Ninja make a Nioh-Like game set in China that I can't even remember the name of because it was so mid. The only thing I remember from it at all was the Yellow Turban Rebellion was part of it. I genuinely cannot even remember the name of the game, and so that time in essence was wasted. Whereas if I had just played Nioh 1 or 2 which are both masterpieces imo, I know for a fact I would be able to remember a fresh playthrough because of how great the experience is. When something is bad, you'll remember it and that's still a memory and time well spent essentially, whereas if something is mid you just forget it, it just gets tossed into the black hole of time.
Or that there are more than four states of matter. Liquid crystal, Bose-Einstein condensates, Fermionic condensates, neutron-degenerate matter, and quark-gluon plasma. Plus a few theoretic ones. It seems to be a feature of Hollywood, not a bug. Sooo many have turned out to be creeps. And that's only the ones we know of, imagine how many there must be in total.
@@VikingTeddy The problem with Hollywood is mot that is woke or what ever the morons who are terminally online and haven't touch grass are mad at it's corruption, the entitlement also Hollywood is conservative it's not this bastin of progressivism I seen abime that are more progressive than Hollywood
“The opposite of love isn’t hate, the opposite of love is indifference.” Mid is indifference, which is why it fuels such responses when used to describe a property expected to be a blockbuster. A lot of people can’t handle when something they fiercely love or hate is met with an 🤷🏾♂️
1.People are allowed to have differing opinions 2.Just because someone has a different opinion than you doesn't mean you should take that as a challenge and try to change their opinion Like Charlie said not everything needs to be argued about. People make mountains out of mole hills all the time and take people having a different opinion as them as a personal attack. Stop taking stuff so personally and just relax.
you just assume mid means it's positive, something being "average" is not good. even being slightly better than average is still bad when it comes to media. you won't ever catch me watching a 7/10 show, because I'd rather do literally anything else.

We as a society have forgotten how to be bored we forgotten how it is to be without stimulation at all times so when something isn’t stimulating, it’s not worth our time energy or attention and that’s really sad
I think the reason "mid" has become more of an insult and why being average is seen negatively is because it runs the risk of being the kind of average that isn't remembered. Typically you remember your most liked things and most hated things the most because they left an impression on you for better or for worse. To be mid or average means enjoyable but not necessarily memorable, which is the main crux of things really. It is crappy tho because now people's expectations are always overly high and I believe its part of why alot of things are worse rn. You either shatter of your category/genre or you will be disliked
The reason why mid is such a big insult is because the most forgotten things are the mid things. If something is absolute shit you remember it if something was amazing you recall it but mid is forgotten. As for people being absolute love or absolute hate that’s less people not being able to understand something being average it’s just the internet is a breeding ground of extremes.
I remember having some appreciation for the term "mid" being used initially, because I thought it meant nuance in online discussion was actually a thing, and people were finally acknowledging that something didn't have to be either the best OR worst thing.
When i consider a thing "mid" i call it "good", which means that the thing was good enough to make me enjoy it, but not enough to stir anything major out of me or stay in my peripheral for a while. I do this cos even if it wasn't the grand experience we all want, it was still a ride i could enjoy and i'm willing to give it positivity instead of negativity.
Its the same problem we have with product ratings. Most products are average, but if they're scored 5/10, nobody will buy. It creates an unobtainable standard
