I genuinely believe I lucked out starting Wheel of Time back in 2008 and completed it by the end of 2013-14. I couldn’t imagine starting it now when the fantasy genre has grown immensely in taste and styles. The last three written by Sanderson were absolutely a breath of fresh air- it was as if Jordan punished you with meticulous details and conversations but Sanderson rewarded you with three lengthy books of action and redemption 😭

Am I the only one who loved meticulous details and conversations hahaha I absolutely adore all of wheel of time, especially the Jordan part of it all 🙈

55:22 I was on a "cozy fantasy" kick after enjoying TK Klune's Under the Whispering Door. But MAN are the most touted cozy books just so... not it? Yes on colonizer aspect of Viv "introducing" coffee! Gave me mad vibes of those white people who go on sojourns to the "Exotic East". Then they come back and introduce some nonsense like $30 congee subscriptions 😭. Also, I love they added a singular gnome character to be like, "Wow, tastes just like home."

The nerd homework comment about Brandon Aanderson is IT exactly! He is so pedantic a d it removes all the magic. Also, so long.

It is so refreshing to see someone on booktube say that they don't want to support Sanderson! He tithes 10% of his income to the LDS church. Considering how much he earns he has given a substantial amount of money to support an institution (a cult) that has over the years opposed marriage equality, sex education, abortion rights, etc. etc. But that's okay I guess because he wrote a few background gay characters in some of his books.

I watched/listened to the first hour and a half of this while doing some boring work stuff, and it helped SO MUCH. Looking forward to finish it tomorrow during work.

I ALSO missed the Hidden Legacies love!!! I should have watched the first half of this live 😭. Anyway, the Baylor family is so great, love them times 1000. And once again registering here that I've decided you should read Pern because I want to see your take on it. Just know going in there is dub/non con

Ooh I loved Yellowface and think it’s a little weird that it is getting such mixed reviews from what I am seeing. I would recommend going into it expecting a horror story and reading it in as few sittings as possible because the pacing is very fast. I am interested in hearing your thoughts

Well, the Hugo nominees have been announced now, and Legends & Lattes is indeed on the list. I was very disappointed by this year's novel nominees, as all of the ones I have read I thought were very mediocre. I have a couple more to get to, so I am really hoping I like one of them enough to vote for it. It's so funny that I have watched several of these mid-year book freakout tag videos, and every single one of them either changes the category for "book boyfriend" or just leaves it out entirely!

My biggest complaint about the Daisy Jones adaptation is that they took the nuance out of all the characters... particularly the women. It is a messy story and I understand going 🤨 at the end because it is wild. Show!Karen and Book!Karen are not the same in so many ways for example and that frustrated me so much.

My most (and so far only) disappointing book of the year was Happy Place by Emily Henry. I couldn't tell if the book was to blame or if I was. I thought the main romance (which wasn't written in a particularly compelling way anyway) was largely overshadowed by the friends growing up/growing apart aspects of it. It read more like a coming of age story for 30 years olds than a romance novel. I've seen some people who didn't like Beach Read say it was because they found it to be kind of sad but I thought Beach Read was well balanced. It had serious themes but there was also a pull between the main characters that made it exciting and worth the investment and was still the focus of the story. But if the bumming out feeling I got while reading Happy Place is what some people experienced while reading Beach Read, then I kind of get the criticism lol Oh and my favourite book of the year so far is the Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno Garcia. I of course read it because it was in your list of favourite books of last year. Absolutely adored it.

'Just try harder' in Fourth Wing sounds like awful disability rep. I was thinking about reading it for the lolz, but the book sounds infuriating.

Hello Merines, I'm a year old reader. Before that, I belonged to a toxic fandom of an online romance fantasy. One of the things I noticed from that "era" is that most of the readers were minors. The fb fandom group made a survey. The median age was 17. However, the youngest reader was 13. Because a lot of them are so young, they also watch a lot of anime. So, they take a lot of their cues of what it means to be a fan from Japanese manga. The writer we followed was so awful to their fans. Always making them feel like they were never suporting them enough. I'm so sorry any fandom went after you. However, I wonder how much of it is marketing manipulating misguided children.

I think most of us went through an era of intense fandom during our teens/early adulthood. (I grew up during the Boy Band Wars of the early ‘00s, so I 100% went through that.) You’re probably right that if a fandom is coming for somebody, they’re probably pretty young because young people often see their interests as personality traits. Any show of disinterest or criticism toward their interests feels like a personal attack even without outside influence. If the target of their fandom is encouraging that sort of toxicity… yeah, it’s a mess. 😬

@@xianassketchbook1060 Fair i guess, but I don't think BS is a despicable person: in Way of Kings there is a background gay character who we learn is gay when the main hero is supposed to organize accommodation for his troops and their families. Main hero is like, whoops, families come in all shapes and sizes, these two gay guys will need a separate housing as well. - then we move on but i was pleasantly surprised

@@xianassketchbook1060he did, he apologized and since then started to include queer characters in his books (though as side characters with not a lot of on page time only). I think the statements made in the past had a lot to do with his religious upbringing (which does not excuse it). It is hard to *truly* know whether he genuinely reflected and understood his mistakes and changed his opinion. I sure hope so though, as a queer person myself who really likes a lot of his works

He is part of LDS church which is basically a cult. Do a google search of what the Mormon church has done to push back on LGBTQ rights over the years. The exmormon subreddit is a good place to start. Sanderson tithes ~10% of his income to the church. He made some mealy-mouthed comments about his changing views but he has possibly given millions to support this cult.
