Generally, they are high upkeep, a bit like a woman, need constant interaction, loving and attention, but when you need them, they're there for you. The big mistake people make is not understanding just how long different species can live, often outliving their owners and needing re-homing or they are just abandoned. Adoption is a good option rather than buying from a pet shop or breeder, because that just puts more abandoned birds on an already filled market. Like racing greyhounds and racing horses! I've learnt so much from our 2 little Cockatiels, also of the Parrot family.

Yeah. And you can instantly tell that the previous owner really loved the bird but that on some level, the bird understood why he had to leave. Spooky. Some species don't usually adjust like that, Cockatoos in particular. They can be one hell of a handful even in a healthy, stable environment. So to be honest, I'd like a little more info on the history of the bird.

While it's a shame he wasn't taught to fly, I love hearing birds having only one owner for many years. That's a person that knew the commitment and stuck to it. They brought him to a rescue, instead of putting him on craiglist. I'm sure they really wanted to bring him along, but it's great he found another wonderful home
@sonofhibbs4425
@sonofhibbs4425 3 года назад
Very true. It’s sad, but I think most pet birds don’t make it past 3 years with their owner. Either through that owner losing interest in them and getting rid of them, or the bird dying from negligence. You’d think the initial expense of the bird would be enough to deter irresponsible owners, but it doesn’t. I’m so sick of hearing about those cases. These animals deserve a happy caring lifelong home. I’m glad there are bird rescue facilities, but even that doesn’t often meet their full needs. I think part of the problem with birds getting adopted is that there is still a lag in knowledge about their proper care. Most everyone knows someone who has a dog or cat and about how to take care of one, but not so much with birds. Most every town, no matter how small has a vet knowledgeable in treating dogs and cats. But it’s hard to find a good avian vet. It’s better than it was. Internet helps, but it’s also hurting in that some unscrupulous people will watch videos and think to get one to ‘entertain’ them. The novelty wears off and the person’s patience wears thin. 😔 it makes me so angry. Like having a child, pets are a commitment. ♥️🙏🏻
@Chelle1214
@Chelle1214 3 года назад
Totally agree. My grandfather has had a few of his parrots for 60 + years. You really need to understand the commitment that comes with them and ideally have a home in mind for after you, as so many parrots outlive their owners. It's beautiful that this parrot has had two wonderful homes.

I just really hope they’re careful if he does learn to fly. Over 25 years ago my cousin had a wonderful cockatoo who could fly. She brought her outside occasionally but she never flew far and always came back. Then one day it was snowing so she brought her outside. She flew up into the snow and never came back. She spent months looking for her, putting up flyers up to 10 miles away, checking in with every animal rescue. Just that one time she flew and never came back.

No one said he would never get to fly unless I missed that part but he's a perfectly healthy bird he literally just needs to practice so his wing muscles can develop she just has to keep motivating him to flap and kind of force him to try flying like putting him on a perch where his only option is to jump or fly (of course with a couch or bed or some super soft cushion because he will inevitably fall at first) and he's good lol

It’s not that he hasn’t been given room to fly…if I heard the sweet lady correctly, she said he’d never learned HOW to fly, and that she takes him out & tries to get him to flap his wings & that she wants him to fly! So far he hasn’t learned how but she thinks she needs to build up his wing muscles first before he’ll be able. So, there’s no reason for him to pluck himself silly, and that’s why he doesn’t! Doobie IS apparently VERY healthy & why shouldn’t he be? He has lots of room, plenty of friends to play with and an owner that dearly loves him! I wouldn’t worry about Mr. Doobie, he seems just fine!🦜

I’ve had my parrot for 30 years, and I would never in a million years get rid of him! I have given up my dream to move out of the country before because of my love and commitment for him. They told me I would have to quarantine him for six months once I arrived with him, and there was not a chance in hell I would do that to my baby! When you truly take your love and commitment seriously to these beings who literally are a part of your family once you bring them into your home, there is no way you would get rid of them!

I have a huge flight aviary, I welcome any parrots people have to give up, and I won't breed them if that is the owners request, though most don't mind, and if they don't get on with my flock, I find them good homes. Birds aren't insane, they just are meant to live in a completely different way than what a lot of humans keep them as. They are flock animals, meant to constantly disassemble/chew things apart as part of the foraging process, and solve problems all the time. Keeping a parrot alone in a small cage without intellectually stimulating toys and not letting it out of the cage frequently (as opposed to for instance the lady in the video who takes good care of the parrot) is a deeply inhumane treatment and torture. It's like locking up a husky in a small cage and act surprised when it gets behavioral and health issues.

28 years. If the owner got him when she/he was 22 that owner is now 50. An age where serious illnesses start to become more common. If the owner got him at 42, that means that original owner is now 70 thus likely forced into a nursing home. The cockatoo was obviously well loved and well cared for by his previous owner so it silly to be calling that original owner out especially without knowing the details.

The main reason I love birds is because of their large lifespan, we can spend time with them, watch them grow, and sometimes pass away with them. :)

I think my 2 favorite things about cockatoos are their personalities and the feathers on the tops their head when they fan out its SO PRETTY

Now that's just mind blowing. An animal that's capable of flying, but just doesn't realize it. Makes you wonder what we are ALL capable of, but just haven't realized it yet.

That was beautiful. God bless you for rescuing him. Have you seen GRIFFI the dancing cockatiel? I bet he would love to watch it.
