Took a little tumble on the step up on Tumbleweed at Ride Rock Creek. Thank you to the Knoxville guys for getting me and my bike back to the shuttle. Thank you Harrison for getting me to my car and cleaned up. Remember kids to always ride with people that will spray you down with cold water after a crash. Thank you Rafi for your support in my shenanigans.

As for why I crashed, it comes down to 2 factors. First, I was getting tired. I had been riding for several hours and it was hot. Sure, I'm not pedaling up the hill but going downhill certainly takes its toll. Secondly, I had just adjusted my suspension by letting some air out of the shock and fork. I was only using a little more than half of the travel. What I didn't do was adjust the rebound along with that, meaning the rebound was too fast. Those two factors combined set me up for failure. I had cleared that jump many times earlier that day, so I approached it the same way. When I went off the lip of the jump I got bucked, pitching me forward. Being that this jump is a step-up with minimal transition on the landing, I wasn't able to ride it out from my nose dive. The crash certainly could have been worse, like snapped neck and dead. So in that sense I am grateful. My injuries are separated shoulder that might need surgery, road rash down my back and elbows, mild concussion, and several strained muscles. Bike is fine. It just needs a wash and a few things put back into place.

Same scenario happened to me about a month ago. And because I changed my suspension I still have not gotten back to my sweet spot and it just caused me to crash again. I've got a trail I love here and as soon as my shoulder gets better again I'm gonna loop that trail until I get my suspension back dialed in and I'm never gonna touch it again

over 95% of motorcyclists had sever injuries on flat asphalt with moving cars. as for enduro "all mountain" biking , zooming at 20-50 mph over drops, obstacles with jumps, hops on uneven, unpredictable soft terrain is also a nearly guarantee to have orthopedic, neurosurgical visits/procedures after good number of repetitions regardless of having best tuned suspension, or techniques. e.g. wingsuit flying accidents, you think improving equipment & skills will avoid their 1 out of 3 finally getting killed statistics????

From your cased landings at the beginning, I thought you might have been in over your head. But your explanation makes sense. The takeaways, which you probably now know, are 1) don't tweak your suspension late in the day when you're not on your game and 2) test those suspension changes repeatedly on a known challenge until you get it dialed before you send the full run.

Thanks for posting. This video arrives in my feed today as i am three days nursing broken ribs. I tucked the front in a fast right hander and saved it but was now way offline. Went over a 9ft embankment at over 20mph. Been through that corner hundreds of times and could probably say tire pressure was a contributor but the fact is at 54 maybe its time to slow down...maybe. 😊

I went OTB at age 67. Wound up with a destroyed L shoulder and surgery to get back 80% of my mobility. I'm now 70 and haven't ridden since then. I enjoy life too much to crash and burn again. Stay safe, and it's ok if you don't ride again. No one on any of these sites will tell you it's ok to walk away from the sport.

Don't do it. Crashing is a part of mountain biking plain and simple at our age, we don't recover like we once did, and although we may love the sport, getting F'd up for the rest of your life isn't worth it. I went OTB in 2022 and wound up destroying my L shoulder. It took me almost 2 years to recover to 80% of what I once had. haven't been on the bike since then. I'm 70 now.

What happened? Why did the front wheel go down, causing you to do multiple somersaults over the handlebar?
@mattgraham4340
@mattgraham4340 2 месяца назад
Don't know for certain, but this can happen if the front wheel tracks the berm/jump then the back wheel bounces of the top of the berm. Also, your stance can play into it because it affects your center of gravity significantly
