My Aunt and Uncle take their mules way up into the mountains hunting. They earned it. Growing up with horses I'm more comfortable in that saddle but my dream is a good horse and pack mule rig. Two horses one mule. Its nice to dream ,if you do it right they come true. Wonderful video!
My grandfather had mules up until the summer he died (1966). He loved mules and used them on his small Tennessee farm. Daddy knew how to work a team as well. In the summer of 1966, I learned how to work a team as well.
I was in the heart of Mexico once and was invited by a Cowboy friend of mine to take salt to the cattle. When he pulled 2 Mules out of the stables and placed saddles on them, I gave a giggle. My friend then replied, when you see the canyon we are going thru you are going to be glad we are riding these Mules. Sure enough the narrow rocky steep trails were no match for the Mules. Boy was I wrong about Mules. 5:42 5:42
We had a pair of mules back in the 50's. I learned to plow when I was only 12 yrs old. I would prefer mules over horses any day. My first job out of high school was plowing rows of sapling at the woodhowell nursaery in Bristol Va. Those were the days.
So let me get this straight...mule skinning, does NOT involve a skinning knife. I feel kinda dumb now, but my excuse is that I'm from Australia. I kid you not, I recall references to mule skinners in lots of books that I've read throughout my life and remember wondering what you Americans used all those mule hides for....I know, dumb huh ?!
What is a Mule-Skinner? A muleskinner is a professional mule driver whose sole purpose was to keep the mules moving. The term 'Skinner' is slang for someone who might 'skin' or outsmart a mule.
