As a Japanese, I find it strange to learn that this story has been accepted overseas. This is an extremely Japanese depiction of daily life, emotions, lifestyle, and details. I thought it would be difficult for non-Japanese to understand. In other words, when one person lives day to day, are the differences between countries and cultures merely trivial?
@atomic_wait
@atomic_wait 4 месяца назад
I'm a Westerner and the themes of the show still resonate with me and my friends and family. Normal people dealing with realistic events in their lives, without much melodrama. I'm relatively familiar with Japanese culture so luckily I can explain the particular Japanese context of certain things, or provide insights into the original language when the script flattens out something in translation, but even without my help everyone here seems to love it. The show feels like it belongs to the iyashikei genre; it makes you feel nostalgic, relaxed, a bit sad. People here find it comforting, too. I think Japan has a longer history of producing this kind of show, but there's a need for it overseas as well
@atomic_wait
@atomic_wait 4 месяца назад
For example, even though folks in the USA might not know about the cultural differences between people from Tokyo and people from the Kansai region, it's clear that the Kasumi character speaks and acts more directly, almost seeming brash and rude compared to the other characters.
@Onkochisi
@Onkochisi 3 месяца назад
sure! In the past, when information about other countries was much more limited than it is now, Japan learned about the world and America through many movies and TV dramas, and even though there were differences in culture and history, the lives of the people depicted in those movies and TV dramas made me happy or sad. As far as I myself am concerned, Billy Joel's Piano Man MV makes me feel nostalgic to the extent that my heart aches for some reason, but I have never been in an American diner or pub 😉

Life has its curious ways to untie the human knots in order to keep on flowing fluid and clean. Master's midnight diner place seems to be a usual restaurant but actually it is where people tell and solve their stories, also touch memories and have unusual meetings. Every detail is a delicacy - since intro song and images from Tokyo to the dishes servings as well as the interaction of the cast with the audience in the end. Too cute! I wish it was real and I could visit there one day! I wish seasons would never end! Hugs from Brazil! ❤

I boldly claim that we humans must have inherited some ancient instincts that are the basis for our psychological needs to gather at night around a cooking fire and share stories. The best thing about the show Midnight Diner is that it appeals to those needs: a simple diner opens at midnight, has dim lights and a U-shaped table where the guests face the cook and the kitchen; the place is small, everyone is within jump-length close to everyone else; although the cook basically doesn’t interfere with their personal affairs, his relationships with the guests are certainly personal, for he is a great listener, prepares heart-warming custom-ordered dishes and remembers each particular preference; a brothel is just around the street corner, adding to the relaxed vibe. The show isn’t mainly about culinary delicacy. The food can be as unspectacular as butter on rice. Rather, the diner offers a counterbalance to the highly formalized, individualistic big city life. In the big city, one sees a lot of people, knows few of them. The diner is a community where people have informal, personal contacts with each other. For theatrical reasons, coming together in the diner helps the guests resolve their own struggles so that the diner virtually becomes a therapy center. The relief slowly builds up and the guests not seldom burst into tears in the end.

Stuck at work, life feels jammed, lonely with tasty food but no one to share it with, aweful stories of real life around you but no melancholic processing of the humility of life? Before you rush to your social media, before you tweet the next big thing, before you hurry home... take a step back, stop by somewhere else....somewhere you belong, somewhere people are as simple and emotion filled like you, somewhere the heart resides and food served salty full of tears melancholy, acceptance, vulnerability and grief colide in the enigmatic persona of the midnight culture

The Netflix could show these other seasons. It would be very legal! Two films? that it envies of you. 😃😄

Que série maravilhosa. Assisti todos os episódios disponíveis no Netflix BR. Uma maravilha ver as histórias, e os pratos apetitosos.

It does have an Ozu vibe. Perhaps Yaro Abs the original manga creator is an Ozu fan, too.

Waaaa. I just found this GEM of a show! Subarashiii~~ Reminds me of one of my fave anime Wakako Zake. So relaxing♡ I have insomnia so I always watch this before I sleep. The only downside: MAKES ME CRAVE FOOD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! 😂❤❤❤

This drama has one of the best intro (opening) I’ve seen in Asian dramas, not even in Japanese dramas only and I’ve seen plenty from Chinese to Thai. It’s such an underrated drama and truly a gem.
